AI boost for panchayats: New tool to auto-record minutes of meeting launched

News18a day ago
New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan' on Thursday launched SabhaSaar, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered meeting summarisation tool designed to automatically generate structured minutes of meeting (MoM) from gram sabha or other panchayat meetings' audio and video recordings.
The Panchayati Raj Ministry said in a statement that the SabhaSaar tool uses advanced AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to transcribe spoken discussions, identify key decisions and action points, and produce well-formatted meeting minutes.
Integrated with Bhashini, the Government of India's National Language Translation Mission, the tool currently supports 13 Indian languages, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for panchayat functionaries across linguistic backgrounds. The number of languages supported will also gradually be increased in future.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has urged all states and Union Territories (UTs) to utilise the SabhaSaar tool for generating MoMs for the special gram sabhas scheduled on August 15.
As a first step, all the 1,194 gram panchayats of Tripura, including traditional local bodies, shall be using the tool to generate the minutes for these special gram sabhas.
The Panchayati Raj Minister, along with Minister of State S P Singh Baghel and Panchayati Raj Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj also felicitated the special guests who will attend Independence Day celebrations here. PTI AO KSS KSS

‘Tariffing India won't stop Putin': US Democrats panel slams Donald Trump's trade move

Democrats in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversees America's foreign policy, said targeting India with tariffs has no bearing on stopping Russian President Vladimir Putin or ending the war in Ukraine. US President Donald Trump with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi.(PTI File) 'Tariffing India won't stop Putin. If Trump really wanted to address Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, maybe punish Putin and give Ukraine the military aid it needs. Everything else is smoke and mirrors,' House Foreign Affairs Committee Dems wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Alongside the statement, the panel shared an interview with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said if tariffs on India failed to curb Russia, more secondary tariffs could follow. 'We've put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,' Bessent said. He added that Trump would make it clear to Putin that 'all options are on the table.' 'I'm not going to get ahead of the president, but the president is the best at creating leverage for himself, and he will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table,' Bessent said. Describing sanctions as fluid and adjustable, Bessent added, 'Sanctions can go up. They can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely. You know, there's this Russian shadow fleet of ships around the world that I think we could crack down on.' Bessent said European leaders were reluctant to back US calls for secondary sanctions, saying that at a G7 meeting, they avoided committing to steep tariffs on China. 'The Europeans need to join us in these sanctions. The Europeans need to be willing to put on these secondary sanctions. I was at the G7 meeting in Canada with President Trump and the Europeans kept talking about Senator Graham's bill to do the secondary tariffs,' said Bessent. 'And I looked at all the leaders around the table, and I said, is everyone at this table willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China? And you know what? Everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing,' he added.

Alaska Talks: Putin Says Ukraine War Wouldn't Have Started If Trump Had Been US President In 2022

Last Updated: Putin backed Trump's claim that his presence could have stopped the conflict from starting in 2022, saying, 'I can confirm that.' Russian President Vladimir Putin said the conflict in Ukraine 'would never have started" if Donald Trump had been the US President in 2022, during their first in-person meeting in five years held in Alaska. Trump has often claimed that the Russia-Ukraine war would not have happened if he were at the helm in the White House. Responding to it, Putin backed the view. Putin said that he had warned Biden against actions that could escalate the situation to the point where 'serious consequences in the form of military actions could occur." 'I would like to remind you, that in 2022, during our last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague, the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities, and I said it quite directly back then, that it was a big mistake." #WATCH | Alaska, USA | '… Today, when President Trump says had he been the President back then, there would have been no war, and I am quite sure it would indeed be so…," says Russian President Vladimir PutinHe also says, 'In 2022 during the last contact with the previous… — ANI (@ANI) August 15, 2025 At the joint conference held after the Alaska talks, both leaders described the meeting as constructive, with Putin referring to the venue as 'a logical venue given our countries' shared history." Putin said that he and Trump had built a 'very good, businesslike and trusting contact," adding that such an approach could help bring the Ukraine conflict to an end 'the sooner, the better." He also praised Trump's 'friendly tone of conversation" and noted that despite past difficulties in US-Russia relations, it was important to 'rectify the situation." While the joint press briefing did not announce concrete outcomes, Putin proposed holding a second round of talks in Moscow, expressing hope that 'Kyiv and the European capitals will constructively perceive all of this and will not create any obstacles or attempt to disrupt the nascent progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigue." Trump, in turn, left the door open to the idea of another meeting, saying, 'I could see it possibly happening." He has recently emphasised his interest in a follow-up dialogue after the Alaska summit. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trump Says His Meeting With Putin Was 10/10: 'We Agreed On A Lot Of Points'
