Food Empire to invest US$37 million to expand soluble coffee manufacturing facility in India

[SINGAPORE] Food and beverage company Food Empire intends to invest US$37 million to expand the capacity of its spray-dried soluble coffee manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh, India.
The move will increase the facility's capacity by around 60 per cent and support the growth of Food Empire's branded consumer business, the group said on Wednesday (Jul 9).
Sudeep Nair, group chief executive officer and executive director of Food Empire, said that the performance of its fast-growing branded consumer business has driven four consecutive years of record revenue growth for the company.
'This has given us the confidence to expand our ingredients manufacturing business, which will not only position us strongly as a leading player in soluble coffee in Asia, but more importantly it will serve as a vital link to support the growth of our branded consumer business as we continue to invest in brand-building activities across our markets,' he said.
The expansion comes under Food Empire's ongoing vertical integration initiatives to enhance control of its entire coffee processing cycle, and will sustain the leading position of its brands across its markets, the group said.
Construction works are set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2025 and will complete by end-2027.

The company views Asia as a strategic growth region, with its South-east Asia segment having climbed to become the largest contributor to its revenue for the first quarter ended March 2025.
The South-east Asia segment's growth was mainly due to strong sales of branded consumer products in Vietnam, which has emerged as Food Empire's fastest-growing market in recent years as a result of the success of its brand-building activities.
Revenue from Vietnam surged 44.6 per cent in Q1 2025 on an enhanced sales force, effective marketing promotions and campaigns, and interactive consumer engagement activities that reinforced brand loyalty and boosted new customer acquisition.
The group in September 2024 announced plans to establish an US$80 million freeze-dried soluble coffee manufacturing facility in Binh Dinh, Vietnam, which is set to complete by 2028.
Shares of Food Empire finished Wednesday 2.2 per cent or S$0.04 higher at S$1.90

NEW YORK/PARIS :Global equities were lower and gold prices eased on Thursday, as traders avoided making big moves and waited for the Federal Reserve's three-day annual Jackson Hole symposium. The symposium starts on Thursday and the focus will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday as traders look for hints about the likelihood of a September U.S. rate cut. U.S. Treasury yields inched higher as the meeting kicked off. Oil futures advanced, bolstered by signs of strong U.S. demand and uncertainty over efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The U.S. dollar also gained, adding 0.35 per cent against a basket of other currencies. Stocks stayed near recent highs during Asian trading, and Australia's benchmark hit a new record. But European and U.S. markets were under pressure, and the MSCI World Equity Index retreated 0.21 per cent. 'People are sitting on their hands. You have a couple of big known unknowns coming, with Jackson Hole tomorrow and the Fed in September," said Tim Graf, head of macro strategy for EMEA at State Street Markets. 'This is the time to send the message, if you're going to ease, that it's coming," he said. "But I can also see them saying, we don't know the full effect of tariffs and inflation pressure is still not quite out of the economy, and being a bit more balanced." On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was down 0.17 per cent, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.24 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.07 per cent. Traders had ramped up bets for a September cut following a surprisingly weak payrolls report at the start of this month, and were further encouraged after consumer price data showed limited upward pressure from tariffs. But they lowered their expectations slightly following the release of minutes from the Fed's July meeting. By Thursday, markets were pricing in a 79.6 per cent chance of a September rate cut, compared to 83 per cent on Wednesday, according to LSEG data. The pan-European STOXX 600 lost 0.04 per cent. Analysts attributed a pullback in tech stocks this week to concerns that AI investments were not delivering returns. Euro zone business activity accelerated in August, PMI data showed, with Germany registering its fastest growth since March and France's downturn easing. Euro zone bond yields were mostly higher, with the benchmark 10-year German Bund up 2.5 basis points at 2.751 per cent. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose 3.7 basis points to 4.334 per cent. The euro was down 0.32 per cent at $1.1614. U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his effort to influence the Fed on Wednesday, calling on Governor Lisa Cook to resign on the basis of allegations made by one of his political allies about mortgages she holds in Michigan and Georgia. Cook said she had "no intention of being bullied to step down" from her position at the central bank. Deutsche Bank analysts in a research note attributed a rise in gold overnight to renewed concerns about the Fed's independence. "The news was a reminder of the lingering concerns over future Fed independence and risks of fiscal dominance, though the extent of the market reaction was fairly modest," Deutsche Bank said. State Street Markets' Tim Graf said that although central bank independence was considered "sacrosanct" by markets, it was not yet problematic. 'Markets quite rightly look through this, price maybe a little bit of risk premium for sure, but it's not something that I think really upsets the apple cart too much," he said. Spot gold prices edged lower, down 0.09 per cent at $3,343.69 per ounce, while gold futures added 0.01 per cent.

[WASHINGTON] US manufacturing is expanding at the fastest rate in more than three years on stronger demand that's also fueling sustained inflationary pressures. The S&P Global flash August factory purchasing managers index rose 3.5 points to 53.3, the highest since May 2022, according to data released on Thursday (Aug 21). Figures above 50 indicate growth. The pickup in the manufacturing gauge helped lift the composite PMI, which also includes a measure of services, to the highest level this year. 'Companies across both manufacturing and services are reporting stronger demand conditions, but are struggling to meet sales growth,'' Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement. Measures of factory output and backlogs of work both climbed to a mid-2022 high. A measure of orders advanced to the highest reading since February 2024. As a result, manufacturers stepped up hiring. Employment growth was the strongest since March 2022, according to the survey. The figures point to resilient demand and optimism about the US economy at the start of the second half of the year. At the same time, the boost in import duties drove up the composite index of sales prices, which matched a three-year high. EU, US reach agreement on joint statement outlining trade deal

[WASHINGTON] The US and European Union took the next steps to formalise their trade pact, detailing plans that could reduce tariffs on European automobiles within weeks while opening the door to new potential discounts for steel and aluminium. The joint statement issued on Thursday (Aug 21) represents an advancement of the preliminary deal announced a month ago, including specific benchmarks for the EU to secure its promised sectoral tariff discounts on cars, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, as well as new commitments for addressing the bloc's digital services regulations. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly praised the sweeping US-EU trade framework, extolling it as 'a big deal' in a Monday White House meeting with foreign leaders including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The development underscores the nature of trade talks under Trump, with some initial, broad pronouncements of deals giving way to weeks – or more – of work to hammer out detailed agreements. Many of them are also tied to sweeping policy changes that could take time to materialise. For example, Trump already imposed a flat 15 per cent rate on most European goods – half the 30 per cent he'd previously threatened. But the US promise to extend that lower levy to autos and auto parts now hinges on the EU formally introducing a legislative proposal to eliminate a host of its own tariffs on US industrial goods and provide 'preferential market access' for some US seafood and agricultural products. Car relief The statement outlines choreographed action on both sides of the Atlantic, with the US codifying reduced auto tariffs once the EU 'formally introduces the necessary legislative proposal to enact' its own promised tariff reductions. The discounted 15 per cent tariffs on European auto imports – lower than a 27.5 per cent Trump previously imposed on them – would be effective from the start of the same month that legislation is advanced. Sign Up Sign Up They could be in place within weeks, said a senior Trump administration official who briefed reporters on the initiative. The shift has been anxiously anticipated by some EU member states, particularly Germany, which exported US$34.9 billion of new cars and auto parts to the US in 2024. The legislative trigger is designed to help ensure the EU delivers on its promised tariff reductions – and ensure the 27-nation bloc has sufficient pressure to obtain the political mandate needed to make the changes, the administration official said. The US is committing to apply lower most-favoured-nation tariffs to a slew of other European products – including aircraft and aircraft parts, generic pharmaceuticals and their ingredients and some natural resources such as cork. The US is also renewing its commitment to cap sectoral tariffs on European pharmaceutical products, semiconductors and lumber at 15 per cent. Metals quotas It's also opening the prospect for discounted rates on some steel, aluminium and derivative products under a quota system. That's a shift from the White House's stated plans in July, when the Trump administration insisted those metal tariffs would remain at 50 per cent, helping to lower trade deficits with the EU and bring revenue to US coffers. On steel and aluminium , the EU and US now assert they 'intend to consider the possibility to cooperate on ring-fencing their respective domestic markets from overcapacity, while ensuring secure supply chains between each other,' according to the joint statement. The document raises major questions about how the EU might fulfill its promise to invest US$600 billion in the US or purchase some US$750 billion in US energy resources – including liquefied natural gas, oil and nuclear power products – through 2028. Private sector investments by European companies would be expected across strategic sectors in the US, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, the senior administration official said. Meanwhile, the EU plans to substantially increase procurement of military and defence equipment from the US, according to the statement, and intends to buy at least US$40 billion worth of US artificial intelligence chips. According to the joint statement, the EU intends to provide preferential market access for seafood and non-sensitive agricultural goods imported from the US, including tree nuts, certain dairy products, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, processed foods, planting seeds, soybean oil, and pork and bison meat. Digital trade In recent weeks, deliberations over the EU's digital services regulations and potential relief for some goods – including wine and spirits – were seen prolonging talks. The EU did not secure lower rates for alcohol in the joint statement. But the US and EU are pledging to address some of what the statement calls 'unjustified digital trade barriers,' with the bloc confirming that it will 'not adopt or maintain network usage fees.' The EU has committed to work towards providing more 'flexibilities' in its levy on carbon-intensive imports set to kick in next year, the statement said, and it will seek to ensure its corporate sustainability due diligence and reporting requirements don't pose 'undue restrictions on transatlantic trade.' Potential changes could include eased compliance requirements for small- and medium-sized businesses, according to the statement. BLOOMBERG
