Korean Action Comedy ‘Informant' Debuts On NYAFF Opening Night
Heo Sung-tae plays detective Nam-hyeok in the Korean action comedy Informant. Nam-hyeong hasn't made any arrests lately. He relies on an informant played by Jo Bok-rae to give him inside info on various criminal activities. Jo's character Tae-bong is a master of disguise. He slips into dangerous situations that could potentially lead to Nam-hyeok making big arrests and earning a promotion. However, Nam-hyeok manages to mishandle every lead he's given. He just keeps getting demoted.
The criminals in this film are obviously not trustworthy, but neither are the police. Some are out for glory and promotions. Some have been corrupted by money and power, betraying each other as readily as the criminals do. At least Nam-hyeok's heart is in the right place, even if he keeps making mistakes.
Heo's detective character Nam-hyeok somehow bungles every opportunity he finds to make a big arrest.
However, Nam-hyeong can't face disappointment forever. He starts to think about robbing the robbers he's pursuing so he can retire. Bok-rae has been working on his retirement plan all along, hoarding some of the profits during every one of Nam-hyeok's failed busts.
The film debuts this week at the opening night of the New York Asian Film Festival and is a good example of the festival's theme 'Cinema as Disruption.' While introducing a range of endearingly unreliable characters, the action rolls out a succession of comically absurd situations that provide laughs from the film's beginning to its end. It's a funny game of cops and robbers in which neither side can exist without the other. There's plenty of bungling to go around.
Heo Sung-tae is best known for his role in the original season of the Netflix hit Squid Game and can currently be seen in the Korean TV drama Good Boy, in which he also plays a detective at odds with the system. Nam-hyeok is the kind of character who might finally get a break if he only stepped out of his own way. Or perhaps if he made better use of his very smart informant.
Jo Bok-rae, who appeared in the films Josée and Coin Locker Girl and dramas such as Moving and Park's Marriage Contract, makes Tae-bong a character to root for. His mad impersonation skills should really land him a job on the right side of the law.
Seo Min-ju, a 2013 Miss Korea beauty pageant winner, appeared in the 2024 film Firefighters and in this film plays a tough cop that Nam-hyeok has a crush on.
Informant is directed and written by Kim Seok, who made his debut with the award-winning short film Humanist at the CJ Young Festival in 2008 and also directed There Is a Bug in 2009.
Informant will have its world premiere on July 11, the opening night of the New York Asian Film Festival. The premiere takes place at the Walter Reade Theater in New York, with director Kim Seok, Heo Sung-tae, Jo Bok-rae and Seo Min-ju attending the opening screening and participating in various events, including a Q&A session following the screening. It's one of several Korean films that will be shown at NYAFF, which runs from July 11 to 27. The roster also includes Forbidden Fairytale with Choi Si-won and Park Ji-hyun, Girl With Closed Eyes, starring Kim Min-ha.

Most Popular Gundam Design Gets The Metal Robot Damashii Toy Treatment
The fan favorite RX-93 Nu Gundam from the movie Char's Counterattack will be getting a Metal Robot Damashii toy early next year. If you know anything about the Metal Robot Damashii toyline, it's a spin-off from the mainline Robot Damashii branding, and you guessed it, features toys with lots of diecast in their construction. Moreover, this spin-off line tends to do lesser-known designs or non-animated variants, such as the Re-GZ Custom or the Gundam Hazel, with both of those toys being also entirely excellent. This is because the sculpt and detailing on these toys is surprisingly high-end despite being quite compact. Personally, I love Metal Robot Damashii toys over their bigger and more expensive brethren, and have quite a few of them already. The smaller size also means you can collect more of them and still have an impressive amount of articulation for all the cool poses you want them to do. In this instance, what makes the choice of the Nu Gundam notable is that this is a mainline Gundam design penned by the very talented Yutaka Izubuchi and one that was voted the most popular amongst Japanese fans in a 2018 poll hosted by NHK. The toy itself also looks superb (shown above), and the diecast elements are almost all internal, increasing the overall joint strength compared to a regular Robot Damashii release. For the Nu Gundam, this is important, as the fin funnel configuration is equipped on the left side of the mobile suit. Often resulting in model kits and toys of this design getting a bit lopsided due to the weight distribution. Available in January of next year, this will also be a general release and therefore more readily available to import from places like HobbyLink Japan. The price point is also not too bad, coming in at 22,000 yen (or around $148 at the current exchange rate). In any case, this is a classic and much-loved Gundam design, and this toy looks to do a genuine tribute to that. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. Anne Hathaway has been seen filming the sequel in a number of Andy Sachs looks—a gray suit with a $15,000 necklace and a navy shirt dress with an unusual red vest, to name a few. Meryl Streep has also made a return as the infamous Miranda Priestly, complete with her iconic sleek silver bob. Not much is known about the much-anticipated sequel yet—other than the looks, of course. We can hazard a guess that Blunt is having a ball on set. After all, back in 2022, before the sequel was confirmed, Blunt said in an interview on The View that she 'would do [a sequel] in a heartbeat just to play with those guys again." Esther Yu's camp asks fans to calm down over rude behaviour
31 Jul - Esther Yu's management recently found themselves having to release a statement reminding her fans to remain rational, following several instances of their unruly behaviour online. The whole issue sparked after Esther's fans lashed out at her studio, accusing it of being "negligent" in managing her career, and focused their rage especially on her manager Li Jing. They claimed that her studio has failed to secure top-tier opportunities like global endorsement deals. In one instance, her fans even went to the social media account of Esther's sponsored watch brand to call her the "first Chinese spokesperson" of the brand, only to be corrected by others who pointed out that the late actress Barbie Hsu was actually the first. Angered by the fact-check, some of these fans left rude comments like, "Why mention her when she is already dead?", sparking anger among many. As the situation escalated, Esther's studio released a statement on Weibo, stating that they have read all the concerns, and that they have the same goal as the fans. "We will strive to secure the resources that she deserves and increase the number of liaisons as soon as possible to expedite the process," her management said.
