KU students must be employed to build a greater future for India: J&K L-G
The L-G said that KU alumni can become catalysts of progress and development in India, including J&K.
'They can highlight what changes have taken place or what changes are still needed to ensure the bright future of J&K. Not only the alumni, but the present-day students of the University form part of the great human potential that can be and must be employed to build a greater future for J&K and the entire country,' he said while addressing the Mega Alumni Meet 2025 at the campus.
The L-G said that all those who excelled in various fields after passing out from the KU are the true brand ambassadors of this university.
He further called upon the distinguished alumni of the KU to facilitate internship and career placement of the students, as they have reached a stage in life where they have the influence to help such career placements in various fields.
'The entire alumni of this university is an extended family. I must refer to Karan Singh, who is an alumnus of this institution, but is not present here today and also Ghulam Nabi Azad and Justice Magray, who are present here today.
'I am sure whenever the name of their Alma Mater is mentioned to them by any student, there must be a specific glow and shine in their eyes,' he said.
After addressing the alumni meet, the L-G said on X posted, 'Happy to have addressed the alumni meet of the University of Kashmir. Called upon distinguished Alumni to come forward to strengthen the higher educational institutions of J&K, and with their expertise and network in various sectors, they should contribute to the peace & progress of J&K.'

Punjab to implement drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9-12
Chandigarh, Jul 28 (PTI) The Punjab government will roll out a pioneering drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9 to 12 in all government schools. The move is part of the third phase of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" drive, Minister of School Education Harjot Singh Bains said here on Monday. Bains said Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will launch the statewide drug prevention curriculum on August 1 at Arniwala in Fazilka district. Giving details about the curriculum, Bains, according to a an official statement, further stated that 'this pioneering programme, created by the Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee-led organisation J-PAL South Asia, will empower around eight lakh students in Classes 9 to 12 with prevention-focused skills to combat substance abuse". 'The curriculum will consist of 35-minute sessions, held every fortnight for 27 weeks, and will feature a mix of engaging content, including documentaries, quizzes, posters, and interactive activities. These sessions will focus on key areas such as myth-busting, refusal strategies, and resisting peer pressure, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions," he said. Bains said that the drugs prevention programme will have a wide reach, covering 3,658 schools and engaging over 6,500 trained teachers to empower approximately eight lakh students from Classes 9 to 12. This comprehensive programme will ensure a significant impact on Punjab's education system, equipping students with essential skills to say no to substance abuse, he said. 'This initiative is grounded in evidence, developed with leading behavioural scientists, and evaluated through randomised trials conducted in 78 government schools in Amritsar and Tarn Taran during FY 2024-25," he said. These trials covered 9,600 students and, evaluated by J-PAL South Asia, yielded significant results. The trials demonstrated a marked improvement in addiction risk awareness, with 90 percent of students recognising the high risk of addiction from trying 'chitta' even once, compared to 69 percent in the control group, the minister added. 'Additionally, the trial successfully debunked myths about addiction, with the belief that addiction can be overcome by willpower alone dropping from 50 percent to 20 percent," Bains said. 'Punjab becomes the first state in India to implement a statewide, evidence-based drug prevention curriculum, while recognising that the battle against drugs begins from the classroom, not in police stations," he said. Meanwhile, the Education Minister shared the details about the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" campaign launched in March this year. He said that the state government has taken stringent actions, including putting over 23,000 drug peddlers behind bars, seizing their properties, and confiscating over 1,000 kg of heroin. These efforts demonstrate the government's dedication to tackling the drug menace and securing a brighter future for Punjab's youth, he added. Zimbabwe needs G20 support to end debt crisis, says World Bank chief
Zimbabwe's best chance of exiting a 25-year debt default is to engage the Group of 20 nations to help formulate a solution and stop trying to work its way out of the quagmire itself, World Bank President Ajay Banga said. The southern African country owes the World Bank and other creditors a total of $21 billion and has tried numerous unsuccessful strategies to restore its access to global capital markets. Those ranged from attempting to repay its debts using the proceeds of metal sales and recently approaching 10 nations for help to raise $2.6 billion to pay its arrears. 'Trying to figure it out on your own, you'll be doing this for the next five years,' Banga said in an interview in Maputo, Mozambique's capital. 'They need to figure out a way to reach out to the G-20 and say, we raise our hand, we'd like to be part of this process.' Zimbabwe first defaulted on repayments to the World Bank in 2000. Its debts to a host of multilateral institutions and bilateral lenders mounted amid a failed land-reform program and a quarter century of economic turmoil, shutting it out of international debt markets and limiting its ability to borrow even during the global pandemic and a recent devastating drought. The government has asked the African Development Bank to advise on clearing its debt with the institution's outgoing president, Akinwumi Adesina, and former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano asked to negotiate with creditors. It also hired Global Sovereign Advisory, a Paris-based consultancy, to help. The fact that Zimbabwean officials, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, have been sanctioned by the US has complicated the process. While Belarus, Syria and Eritrea are also in arrears to the World Bank, Zimbabwe's default is by far the longest. South Africa, which currently holds the G-20 presidency, last month said it has been approached by Zimbabwe to try and garner the group's support for a debt workout. Zambia, Ghana and Ethiopia are among nations that have employed the G-20's Common Framework, which was created in 2020 to help poor nations bring together a diverse set of creditors to restructure debts. While they have made progress in reaching deals, the process has been criticized for being too slow. Zimbabwe isn't technically poor enough to be eligible to utilize the framework, yet Sri Lanka — a nation in a similar situation — approached the group in 2023 for help with dealing with its creditors. 'Start talking to the G-20 and the Paris Club' and whoever else has given them money and we can help, Banga said. 'We try and bring an understanding of what write down you need to take. It takes a while.'
