Ahaan Panday's ‘larger-than-life' debut project was cancelled by YRF, Aditya Chopra told him to look for work elsewhere: ‘Sab guroor aur pride chali gayi'

Ahaan Panday became an overnight sensation after starring in the recently released film Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri and co-starring Aneet Padda. In an interview, Mohit revealed that Ahaan had originally been signed to star in a large-scale project at YRF, but studio head Aditya Chopra pulled the plug on it because it was no longer feasible in the current market climate. Ahaan, who had told everyone that he was going to be launched by YRF, was left with egg on his face. He'd been groomed for half-a-decade by YRF, and now, Aditya Chopra was telling him that he was free to look for work elsewhere. Mohit Suri praised Ahaan for sticking with YRF, who offered him the opportunity to star in the romantic drama Saiyaara. Mohit said that the decision was left up to him, and he wasn't impressed initially. But he changed his mind after he spent some time with Ahaan in his natural habitat, a bar filled with folks his age. In an interview with Komal Nahta, he reflected on Ahaan's state of mind after the initial setback. 'They could easily make a web series on the making of Saiyaara; all of us have had our journeys with the film,' he said. Also read – Saiyaara actor Ahaan Panday lived in a 'corridor' till he was 14, growing up with sister Alanna and cousin Ananya: 'I was the least pampered in the family' Mohit continued, 'Ahaad had actually been workshopping with YRF for seven years. He was supposed to do a larger-than-life film before the pandemic. But the project was cancelled, because, as you know, the industry changed. Overnight, his pride and 'guroor' was killed. The same kid who was going around telling everyone that he would be launched by YRF was heartbroken. People started saying to him, 'You were bragging about being launched by YRF, what now?'' Mohit said that Aditya Chopra even told Ahaan that he was free to look for work elsewhere. 'I know that Adi sir called him after the pandemic, and told him that his faith in his talent hasn't decreased even one bit, but that he could start looking for opportunities outside the studio if he wanted to. 'You don't need to hang on here, you can look for work elsewhere', he was told. But the kid was adamant that he could only be launched by YRF, and it worked.' Saiyaara has emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year, and one of the biggest hits to feature two newcomers in the lead roles. The film has grossed over Rs 400 crore worldwide, a number that movies featuring major stars have struggled to hit in recent years. Ahaan is the son of businessman Chikki Panday; his uncle is actor Chunky Panday, and his cousin is actor Ananya Panday.

Like Ahaan Panday in Saiyaara, Mohit Suri was turned down when he first proposed to wife Udita Goswami: ‘He tattooed…'

If you haven't watched Mohit Suri's blockbuster hit film Saiyaara yet, beware! There is a tiny spoiler ahead. But we couldn't gatekeep this crazy connection that Mohit's real love story has with the film's lead character Krish Kapoor, played by Ahaan Panday. After Krish's girlfriend Vaani, aka actor Aneet Padda, fainted and was taken to the hospital, her mother cornered Krish and asked if he would marry her. When Ahaan went to meet Aneet, who had regained consciousness, he asked her to marry him. However, Aneet's character turned Ahaan down. Well, the same thing happened when Mohit proposed to his now-wife Udita Goswami. Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda with Mohit Suri and Udita Goswami After dating for 7 long years, actor Udita Goswami and filmmaker Mohit Suri tied the knot in a temple wedding in 2013. A few days before the wedding, in an interview with HT City, Udita revealed that she had turned Mohit down when he proposed for the first time, four years ago. In this throwback interview, Udita shared, 'He proposed to me four years back, but at that time, I wasn't ready. In fact, even he wasn't ready. He asked me because he really wanted to marry me. This time, he did a lot of things… he tattooed my name on his ring finger and got his family to speak to mine.' While the first proposal was declined, Mohit and Udita finally got their happily ever after in 2013, much like Ahaan and Aneet's characters in Saiyaara. Interestingly, Mohit had decided to marry Udita much before they even started dating. Revealing the same, Udita had shared, 'He was in the editing studio when my film Paap was being worked on. He saw me there and said, 'this is the girl I want to marry'.' Mohit and Udita have been happily married for 12 years now and are proud parents to two children. Meanwhile, Ahaan and Aneet have become overnight stars with their debut film Saiyaara.

Anurag Basu dismisses claims Aashiqui 3 starring Kartik Aaryan-Sreeleela being rescripted after Saiyaara's success: ‘The only similarity in our films is…'

Whenever a Bollywood movie becomes a success, it often instils a sense of dread among audiences, fearing it may trigger an unending trend of films that blindly replicate the original's story and style. This concern is not unsound, and the industry has witnessed it many times with filmmakers and production houses rushing to ride the gravy train by rehashing someone else's original work, thus reaping the rewards without sowing the seeds. With renowned director Mohit Suri's Saiyaara becoming a massive hit, all are now waiting to see how many 'new' musical romantic dramas will follow suit. Meanwhile, the project that has found itself in the spotlight is director Anurag Basu's Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela-starrer, which is already under production as the third instalment in the Aashiqui franchise. Much like Saiyaara and even Mohit's Aashiqui 2 (2013), the male lead in the Kartik Aaryan film is also a rockstar musician, inevitably inviting comparisons among all the projects. Ever since the Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer became a hit, speculations have been rife that Anurag and team were busy reworking their script to eliminate similarities. However, the Metro… In Dino director has categorically denied the rumours, maintaining that the resemblances between the two projects were minimal. 'Mohit and I are very close. I'm happy for his film's success. The only similarity in our films is that the male lead is a rockstar, and the story is about his journey,' he told Mid-day. Saiyaara revolves around a young couple whose lives take a turn when the woman is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Asserting that he knew the Mohit Suri film's storyline as the latter had narrated it to him, Anurag emphasised that they share a warm camaraderie. He added, 'In my film, the girl doesn't have dementia or any [other condition]. We are not rewriting or re-shooting. I knew beforehand that the girl had Alzheimer's disease in Saiyaara. So, why would I write the same [plot point] in mine?' Although Mohit originally pitched Saiyaara's story to be developed as Aashiqui 3, it eventually didn't go through. Thus, he went ahead and kickstarted it as a fresh project, while Aashiqui 2 producers Bhushan Kumar (T-Series) and Mukesh Bhatt (Vishesh Films) roped in Anurag Basu and Kartik Aaryan to float the third instalment in their musical romantic drama franchise. However, after the Bhushan-Mukesh split, a legal dispute arose over the use of Aashiqui in the film's title. After it took a legal route, the Delhi High Court ruled in Mukesh's favour, preventing the makers from naming the film Aashiqui 3.
