Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener is on Day 63, which means Tom Dempsey's legendary 63-yard field goal is an easy pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Any Saints fan who inherited their team from the previous generation knows the story. Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot and kicked with a one-of-a-kind box-toed boot, which was later outlawed by the NFL. With the game on the line and only seconds left on the clock back in 1970, Dempsey won the day against the Detroit Lions with a field goal from 63 yards, setting a new NFL record.
Dempsey's record stood for 43 years; his iconic kick led to several rules changes and wasn't surpassed until Matt Prater nailed a 64-yarder at altitude with the Denver Broncos. In 2021, Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker reset the record with a 66-yard field goal.
Most importantly, Dempsey's field goal gave Saints fans something to brag about when they really needed it. The team lost a lot of games back in 1970 (and for most of the 1970's). They didn't have many Pro Bowlers or special moments, and that this one endured for so long only made it more memorable. We're grateful that brighter days came along, but we're still thankful Dempsey made that kick back in 1970, too.

Ben Johnson says Bears starters, including Caleb Williams, will play in second preseason game against Bills
Caleb Williams will make his preseason debut in Ben Johnson's Chicago Bears offense Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills on national TV. "Our starters are going to play," the first-year Bears head coach announced Wednesday. "Everyone's going to play." Johnson was then asked what kind of value that opportunity affords Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick who is now in his second year quarterbacking the Bears but only his first in Johnson's system. "Well, last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get him up to speed," Johnson said. "And by the plan we had a week ago, we were able to get him probably somewhere between 80 and 100 more reps than we would have been able to do had he played in the game. "This week, it's a different schedule, different length of time in terms of in between games and all of that. And, so, our plan right now is that the guys that sat out last week will be playing this week." Johnson has been throwing the kitchen sink at Williams this offseason as he installs a complex yet balanced offensive system that helped transform the division rival Detroit Lions. The Bears hired Johnson less than 48 hours after the Lions' first 15-win season in franchise history ended prematurely in the NFC divisional round. Still only 39 years old, Johnson has quickly established himself as one of the NFL's premier offensive minds. During his three seasons as Lions offensive coordinator, he became a trendy name and then the most-wanted assistant in offseason hiring cycles. Last season, Detroit led the league with 33.2 points per game. Meanwhile, Williams had a roller coaster rookie campaign in Chicago, where he was stuck under a coaching staff on borrowed time. Williams, an escape artist at Oklahoma and USC, was sacked 68 times. While he posted a 20:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio, he threw for only 3,541 yards and completed just 62.5% of his passes while the Bears went 5-12 in an otherwise elite NFC North. Johnson and Williams have lofty goals for this season. The Bears are still searching for their first 4,000-yard passer, and they believe he's wearing No. 18. Williams will be out there Sunday against the Bills showing a glimpse of his connection with Johnson.

Eagles Super Bowl champion reunites with teammates amid Browns QB battle
PHILADELPHIA — One by one, there was an assembly line of Philadelphia Eagles who said hello to a former teammate, to the quarterback who took the final snap in Super Bowl LIX. Kenny Pickett was a popular guy on Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex. The Cleveland Browns were in town for their first of two joint practices ahead of Saturday's preseason game. That afforded Pickett, Jalen Hurts' 2024 backup who was traded to the Browns and is now competing for Cleveland's starting job, to catch up with old friends. After practice, Pickett spoke extensively with Jahan Dotson. He shook hands with iconic radio broadcaster Merrill Reese. He hugged Jordan Mailata, chatted with Saquon Barkley and signed a few autographs before speaking with Lane Johnson and assistant coach Jeff Stoutland. 'Man, we had a lot of great (times),' Johnson said. 'He's just a good guy.' There were plenty of smiles, plenty of laughs. But Pickett had more work to do. After catching up with old teammates, the former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick found a spot on the far left practice field and started jogging, working out the hamstring that's hampering his ability to compete. Pickett entered training camp looking to separate himself from Joe Flacco and rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel in a crowded quarterback room. But on July 26, he injured his hamstring, and he's been limited ever since. Pickett participated in 7-on-7 drills against the Eagles but didn't take part in full team sessions. It remains to be seen if the 27-year-old will be cleared to play in Saturday's preseason game. It's an unfortunate turn of events for Pickett, who was dealt from the Eagles to the Browns in exchange for a fifth-round pick and reserve quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Pickett still has a chance to get healthy and beat out Flacco, Sanders and Gabriel. But the last few weeks aren't what the New Jersey native had in mind when he landed in Cleveland. 'He was excited by the opportunity to compete for a job. That's all he wanted to do,' Tony Racioppi, Pickett's personal quarterbacks coach, told PennLive at practice. 'A lot of times, when you're a young guy who's a starter and things don't work out for you, you don't get a shot again. So I think he was excited to have that opportunity. And he worked his butt off like he always does, and he was super prepared. Then obviously the hamstring happened.' Pickett's journey to the Eagles came through western part of the state. Pitt's all-time leading passer and the 2021 ACC player of the year was selected by the Steelers with the No. 20 overall pick in 2022. He started 24 games with a 14-10 record, throwing for 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. When Pittsburgh signed Russell Wilson last offseason, Pickett requested a trade, seeking a fresh start. The Eagles obliged. Philadelphia dealt a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks for Pickett and a fourth-round pick, securing an experienced backup for Hurts. Pickett played well in limited action. When Hurts sustained a Week 16 injury against the Commanders, Pickett came in and completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He started the following week against the Cowboys, completing 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and no picks (and a 'tush push' score) in a 41-7 win. Pickett appeared in Super Bowl LIX when the game was well and truly over. He played out the final two drives and kneeled out the Eagles' 40-22 blowout of the Chiefs. Pickett, an Eagles fan growing up, had a moment he would never forget. But it wasn't a shock when Pickett was dealt to the Browns in the spring. Tanner McKee, entering his third season with the Eagles, was ready to back up Hurts. And while playing close to family and friends was nice, Pickett was itching for an opportunity to start again. 'It was a year for him to kind of step back, learn from a great organization and learn from a franchise quarterback. It was good to reset himself,' Racioppi said. 'But at the same time you want to play. And if you stay here, you're not going to play. Now, he's got an opportunity to play and be a starting quarterback in the NFL. And hey, he got a ring out of it, right?' He did indeed. Pickett came back to Philadelphia last month to receive his Super Bowl ring and celebrate with his former teammates. Barkley said earlier in camp that one of the things that made the ceremony 'even more special' was sharing it with former teammates like Pickett. A few weeks later, Pickett got to share the practice field again with the Eagles. And on Saturday, he'll be hoping to be able to play in front of family and friends again at Lincoln Financial Field — with an eye on the Browns' starting quarterback job.

Raiders star Crosby calls Chiefs' Mahomes the ultimate competitor, a big reason for his success
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Maxx Crosby kept running into star athletes over the summer, from NBA great Kevin Garnett to former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., and the instant connection they shared made the Raiders' star pass rusher think about another athlete he keeps coming across a couple of times a year. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The reason was simple: 'He's the ultimate competitor,' Crosby said. 'Like, I've had the honor to meet some of the greatest players, greatest people, greatest dudes across all different types of walk of life,' Crosby explained, 'and I could say this: Like, when you meet somebody else that's an ultimate competitor, and that is all what you're about, I don't even have to say nothing. It's just, you click right away.' Crosby and Mahomes are not exactly best of buds, but there is a healthy dose of respect between two of the fiercest rivals in the AFC West. Crosby has sacked Mahomes six times in 12 career games, yet the Chiefs have won eight of the last nine. Mahomes is 12-2 against the Raiders overall, throwing 33 touchdown passes and only five interceptions. 'So, I got the ultimate respect for Pat. I've said it a million times,' Crosby said. 'I look at myself as the ultimate competitor. I look at myself as the best in the world. I know he thinks he's the best in the world. And I've said it myself. So, he brings the best out of me. I know I bring the best out of him. So definitely looking forward to those wars.' Mahomes isn't exactly sure where his competitive nature comes from, though dad is a safe place start. Pat Mahomes Sr. managed to hang around for 11 years in the big leagues, and his son spent a lot of those years hanging out in the clubhouse. It's what drives Mahomes all offseason, when his personal trainer, Bobby Stroupe, is putting him through yet another brutal workout. It's what pushes him in practice, the boiling ones at training camp and the frigid ones late in the season. And it's what allows him to push through the pain of bumps and bruises on gameday, when other QBs might call it quits. It's what has allowed Mahomes to continually rally his team, leading them to five Super Bowls and three championships. 'Yeah, that burn to win is at the highest level of probably any player in the NFL,' Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said. 'He's built different that way, and I think when you have that, it goes on to these players on the team — offense, defense, special teams — and us as coaches. You want to make sure you are doing everything possible.' So many games in the NFL come down to the wire, Nagy said, and the sheer will to win sometimes makes the difference. 'When you have him on your side, you know he's going to give you a great chance,' Nagy said. 'When we lost that Super Bowl (in February), it was the very next day and he was ready to go, and we just know that it's a great, high standard that we all have.' Mahomes readily admits that the 40-22 loss to the Eagles in New Orleans was one of the worst performances of his career, and that the Philadelphia defense had a lot to do with it. He threw two interceptions and was sacked six times. Still, the numbers that Mahomes — who turns 30 next month — has compiled through his first eight seasons are staggering. His career passer rating of 102.1 is second only to Aaron Rodgers, while Mahomes' average of 288.9 yards passing per game is the best of anyone to play the quarterback position. But perhaps most importantly, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to seven of their nine consecutive AFC West titles, and then reached the conference title game in each of those seven seasons. 'I think you always have to get better,' Mahomes said. 'That's something that people lose track of when you have success. Obviously we didn't win that last game, but we had a lot of success last year. And I think sometimes people want to be stagnant, and they want to go out there and just do it over again. But you see with the rest of the AFC West, the rest of the AFC and the NFL, everybody is getting better. So we have to get better.' Spoken like someone whose competitive fire is blazing hotter than ever. 'We have to keep the urgency in practice, competing, going at it,' Mahomes said.
