Villagers kill 2 wolves in Luni after 10 people attacked in 2 days

Time of India3 days ago
Jodhpur: After about 10 people were attacked and injured by wolves in the past two days in Luni area of Jodhpur, villagers killed two wolves on Sunday and Monday in retaliatory action.
DCF (wildlife) Ramesh Kumar, confirming the killing of two wolves, said bodies of both animals were taken under possession and sent for postmortem. He added that action will be taken against those who killed the animals, as wolves are a protected species under Schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
"Killing a protected animal is a crime," Kumar said, and attributed the violent behaviour of the wolves to mating season and a sense of protection for their pups.
Before this, a wolf was spotted lying dead on a road in the area, believed to have been crushed under some vehicle. Among the people attacked by wolves in the past two days in the area was an old woman.
Slamming the inaction of the forest department, president of Bishnoi Tiger Force, Rampal Bhawad, said that the attacks and the killings of the animals by frightened villagers could have been averted if the forest department had taken timely action.

"The presence of wolves and their attacks on the villagers had already been reported. But the forest department did not swing into action, as a result of which angry villagers killed two wolves," said Bhawad.
Wolves have been endemic to this region for years, but their population has drastically declined, mostly due to human intervention. A wildlife enthusiast and crusader for saving the effluent-infested Jojari river, Shravan Patel, said that wolves' habitats were destroyed by shepherds by plugging their dens.
"But there was no intervention by the forest department to save them and to spread awareness among villagers," he said.
Another wildlife enthusiast, Kewal Ram Bishnoi, attributed the major loss of the wolf population to the growing mining activities along the Luni river. "The entire river basin has been ravaged by gravel mining. There were many wolves around the Luni river from Gudha to Kankani and the pastureland. Some were killed by shepherds while some were displaced by the extensive mining activities," he said.

$700,000 from US to India: Indian-origin doctor Krishnaswami Sriram sentenced to 34 months in jail for tax evasion, medical fraud

Krishnan Sriram, Indian-origin doctor, sentenced to 34 months in prison for tax evasion and medical fraud in US. Indian-origin Illinois doctor Krishnaswami Sriram has been sentenced to 34 months in prison for medical fraud and tax evasion. According to the Justice Department, he hid his assets and lied to the IRS about his ability to pay $1.6 million in taxes, penalties and interest. From 2011 to 2017, Sriram evaded payment of approximately $1.6 million he owed to the IRS. Among other evasive steps, Sriram transferred ownership, in name only, of two rental properties to his children without their knowledge while he continued to receive income from the properties. He also transferred approximately $700,000 from bank accounts he controlled in the United States to accounts in India. To fraudulently reduce the money he owed, Sriram submitted documents to the IRS as part of an offer-in-compromise that omitted an investment account in the United States, bank and investment accounts in India, and ownership of the rental properties. In total, Sriram caused a tax loss to the IRS of approximately $1.6 million. His medical fraud took place between 2011 and 2022, when he made false Medicare billings to be submitted for in-home physician care that did not take place. Sriram claimed to provide care for Medicare beneficiaries on dates when those individuals were either deceased or resided at inpatient facilities other than their homes. Sriram's false statements in medical records relating to these episodes of care resulted in $136,980.36 in false billings to Medicare. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One Spray = Instantly Clean Wheels Nexa Undo In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered Sriram to serve three years of supervised release and to pay approximately $1.7 million in restitution to the United States. In March this year, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion and admitted false billion to Medicare.

Central Administrative Tribunal seeks Punjab's response on IPS officer's daughter plea for dues

Representative Image (AI-generated) The Principal Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), New Delhi, has asked the Punjab government to respond on a plea filed by Shabri Prasad, daughter of Punjab cadre IPS officer Late R C Prasad, seeking payment of statutory interest on her delayed pension arrears. Shabri, an unmarried daughter of the 1976-batch Punjab cadre IPS officer who died in service in December 2003, has been a legitimate recipient of family pension under Rule 54 of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972. However, her pension was abruptly discontinued when she turned 25 years old, despite government orders clarifying that unmarried daughters above that age are eligible for continued family pension if they remain unmarried and dependent. Her pension was restored only in 2020 after she pursued repeated representations, following which she received arrears aggregating to Rs 43.61 lakh in three installments. However, the arrears were paid without the statutory interest mandated under Rule 65(2) of the CCS (Pension) Rules, 1972, which requires payment of interest in cases of delay attributable to administrative lapses. The unpaid interest on delayed payments has been tentatively calculated at around Rs 43.21 lakh at 9 per cent per annum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In her plea before the principal bench of CAT, she has submitted that despite several representations — including letters dated September 2024 and emails to senior Punjab officials — no action was taken to release the interest component. The denial of statutory interest is in violation of Rule 65(2) of the CCS (Pension) Rules, 1972, she has submitted before the tribunal. The matter was last heard on July 14, 2025, when the Tribunal fixed it for August 27 asking the Punjab government to respond. For Shabri Prasad, the matter is not merely financial but also symbolic of a long struggle against bureaucratic indifference. 'My father served the Punjab Police with dedication. After his death, I have had to fight every step of the way to secure what is rightfully mine,' she has stated in her representations.

Ahmedabad: An oncologist associated with a private hospital filed a police complaint against a businessman for allegedly cheating him of Rs 15.22 lakh in the name of providing social media and online promotional services. According to the complaint lodged with Satellite police, the 40-year-old doctor, a resident of Vastrapur, stated that the 44-year-old accused from Vasna had formed a group named Doctor Collaborating Network (DCN) in March 2024. Through this group, he approached several doctors, including the complainant and his wife, who is a gynaecologist. The accused allegedly shared a PDF on WhatsApp offering promotional packages of a company that claimed to provide one-year plans for digital content creation, social media advertisements, website development and maintenance, and search engine optimisation (SEO). Believing the offer, the complainant opted for the annual plan costing Rs 22.15 lakh plus 18% GST. Satellite police have registered a case of cheating and breach of trust under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and begun an investigation.
