Kane Wommack updates status of injured Alabama defensive back

USA Today5 days ago
On Saturday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack spoke to the media for what was the first time since fall camp officially began.
As part of this, Wommack, who is entering his second season as defensive coordinator at Alabama, commented on many different areas of the Crimson Tide defense, some of which were players.
Among that group of players in particular was returning safety Keon Sabb, who is currently working his way back from a season-ending injury sustained last October against Tennessee.
Wommack was also asked the question if Sabb has since returned to 100% following Saturday's practice as well, with the Alabama defensive coordinator saying of the returning starter:
"Keon's doing a really good job," Wommack said. "He has really pushed, our training staff's done a great job with him. I think he's ahead of really every marker that we had in the offseason for him, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to go to the level that he's going right now at the beginning of fall camp, but he is, and he's here. I don't know if I could put a number on it exactly, but I mean, he's out there playing with our guys, and so he's comfortable enough to be able to do that. Sometimes, those injuries, you just have to build a callous of coming back, and I think that's something that he's really pushing himself right now to get ready for the season."
Transferring from Michigan last offseason, Sabb was a day-one starter for the Crimson Tide at safety a year ago who compiled 39 tackles and 0.5 TFL across his seven games played. Sabb also had two interceptions, both of which came in the season opener against Western Kentucky.
Sabb, a redshirt junior, is expected the start for the Crimson Tide at safety once again this fall, opposite of Bray Hubbard.

Travis Hunter flashes two-way potential before Jaguars preseason debut

Travis Hunter is attempting to become the NFL's first elite two-way player, and his head coach, Liam Coen, thinks the rookie star may bring home both rookie of the year awards. The Jaguars are preparing for their first preseason game this weekend, where we will finally see how Jacksonville deploys Hunter in a game setting. To get ready, Hunter is playing both offense and defense on the same day of practice this week. During Wednesday practice, his rep at cornerback going up against wide receiver Dyami Brown was a play Colorado fans saw a lot of the last two seasons. Hunter was in the perfect position in the end zone to knock the ball away as Brown attempted to reel in a touchdown. He even nearly came down with the interception. Jaguars fans and coaches will hope this becomes the norm on Sundays. How many snaps Hunter plays on game days remains undecided, but the more reps he has, like the one on Wednesday, the harder it will be to keep him off the field. Ahead of Saturday's game, the Jaguars released their preliminary depth chart this week, with the former Colorado Buffaloes star listed as a starter at wide receiver, but a backup cornerback. Coen stated this week that Hunter is still learning the intricacies of the receiver position and is further ahead with his cornerback play. The highlight above supports that sentiment. Colorado fans can catch Hunter and the Jaguars face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 31: a history of the number and who wore it best

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 31 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 31 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 31 wearer: CB Beanie Bishop One of the most surprising rookie breakouts last season — CB Beanie Bishop is the current No. 31 wearer on the Steelers roster. After signing with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft, Bishop clearly had a chip on his shoulder — snagging four interceptions in just six starts as a rookie. His role in 2025 is expected to be far less impactful after two huge cornerback additions this offseason in Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, but his development should skyrocket with two veteran presences in the secondary. Last five Steelers to wear No. 31: Best No. 31 in Steelers history: S Donnie Shell The greatest Steeler to wear No. 31 is without a doubt S Donnie Shell — who signed with Pittsburgh after going undrafted in the 1974 NFL Draft. Over the course of 14 seasons from 1974 to 1987, Shell played in 201 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers — responsible for 51 interceptions, the third-most by a Steeler all time. During his Pittsburgh tenure, Shell won four Super Bowls alongside the legendary Steel Curtain defense — as well as being named to five Pro Bowls, earning three First-Team All-Pro selections, and one Second-Team All-Pro selection. He was also recognized and celebrated on the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team, the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020. Shell's impact on the game and his part in creating the Steel City dynasty is why he's the best Steeler to ever wear No. 31.
