Hi-Tech Surveillance Ensures Safe Amarnath Yatra 2025 After Pahalgam Attack
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, a major challenge for security forces was ensuring the safety of pilgrims. In response, authorities upgraded the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Srinagar with the latest technology to ensure every pilgrim remains under constant surveillance.
The Hi-tech Command Centre operates 24/7 with around 120 personnel from nearly 35 government departments working in two shifts.
Departments involved include the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NDRF, SDRF, Health, PHE, PDD, Telecom, and others. Approximately 101 PTZ High Definition 360-degree view cameras and over 1,052 surveillance cameras have been installed along the Yatra routes, base camps, highways, and key points like Pahalgam, Srinagar, and Baltal. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras provide aerial monitoring of remote and sensitive areas.
Advanced security screening at checkpoints, live-stream monitoring, and seamless communication enable real-time coordination. The ICCC integrates data from facial recognition systems, CCTV, drones, and field reports to provide centralised monitoring and rapid response capabilities.
V.K. Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, stated, 'Top security arrangements have been made for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. We have upgraded the command centre, introduced facial recognition systems, increased the number of CCTV cameras, and are conducting live monitoring. Our aim is to ensure that no pilgrim feels insecure or faces any inconvenience. We are maintaining 24/7 surveillance on both routes.'
The April 2025 Pahalgam attack heightened focus on security. Upgrades to the ICCC have significantly improved threat detection and emergency response. The system not only addresses security threats but also identifies medical emergencies, potential disasters, and helps locate missing individuals.
Real-time updates on Yatra progress, weather, and security alerts are provided through SASB-managed apps and websites, accessible to pilgrims and their families.
Bidhuri added, 'Technology plays a crucial role in surveillance. In emergencies, RFID tags make it easier to locate pilgrims. Due to unpredictable weather, RFID also helps us manage Yatri movement tracking who has returned to camps and who is still en route. It gives pilgrims a sense of safety.'
Thanks to such robust technological measures including facial recognition, CCTV networks, drones, and RFID. The 2025 Amarnath Yatra has seen an unprecedented response. Over 1.20 lakh pilgrims offered prayers in the first seven days alone, surpassing previous records and restoring confidence among devotees after the Pahalgam attack.

I-Day parade rehearsal, security drill held successfully in J&K
Srinagar: Full dress rehearsals for the Independence Day parade were held across the Kashmir and Jammu divisions on Wednesday as a multi-tier security network is in place to secure the parades and celebrations on August 15. IGP (Kashmir Zone), told reporters in Srinagar on Wednesday that full dress rehearsals for the Independence Day parades were successfully held across the Valley. 'In addition to this, a security drill was also successfully concluded at different district headquarters of the Valley today. Ahead of the country's Independence Day, a mega 'Tiranga Rally' attended by hundreds of people, including senior officers of the administration, police, and the common citizens, was organised in Srinagar on Tuesday. The rally was led by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Later, the CM said, "We should uphold the prestige of the national flag; it is our identity, and we should respect it.'

'Bedroom Jihadis' the new nuisance for security in J&K
Jammu: Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir are grappling with a new and insidious threat in the form of "bedroom jihadis" -- people who manipulate social media from the safety of their homes to spread misinformation and incite communal discord, officials said. This kind of enemy, far removed from the traditional armed terrorists, is at the heart of a sophisticated cross-border effort to destabilise the region, the officials said. An in-depth investigation has uncovered a network of social media handles, believed to be controlled by terror groups and their sympathisers in Pakistan, that have been actively intruding into local digital spaces, disseminating inflammatory content and propaganda with the clear objective of creating sectarian clashes and unrest in the Kashmir valley. "After years of fighting armed terrorists, security agencies have been facing this hidden enemy in which these new-age jihadis use computers and smartphones to wage war from just about anywhere, spreading rumours and influencing youths," an official in the know of the developments said. The trend emerged in 2017 but ended after an effective crackdown with curbs on the Internet post abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. After the successful completion of assembly elections last year, the "bedroom jihadis" have surfaced again, possibly with an aim to destablise the elected government and create a sense of unrest, the officials said. Security agencies have also uncovered a sophisticated and concerted effort by terror groups and their sympathisers operating from across the border to use social media platforms to incite sectarian clashes and destabilise the region. The investigation, which has been underway for several weeks, involved scrutinising thousands of social media posts, comments and private messages and its analysis provided compelling evidence of a direct link between these malicious online activities and handlers located in Pakistan. During Muharram days observed by the Shia community recently, there was tension between the two sects of the Muslim community over a post but effective handling by Srinagar police doused the fire before it could spread, the officials said. Former Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kuldeep Khoda says the successful identification and disruption of this cross-border social media plot highlight the evolving nature of threats to security in Jammu and Kashmir. "While traditional terror activities remain a concern, the digital battlefield is increasingly becoming a front where external forces seek to destabilise the region by exploiting local tensions, which should be nipped in the bud," he feels.

Killing of Kashmiri Pandit woman in 1990: SIA raids eight locations, including JKLF chairman's home
SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police's State Investigation Agency (SIA) on Monday carried out searches at at least eight locations in Srinagar, including the residence of detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, in connection with the alleged killing of a Kashmiri Pandit woman by militants in 1990. Sources said the SIA sleuths, assisted by police and paramilitary personnel, conducted the raids in connection with FIR No. 56/1990 under Sections 302, 120 RPC, 3/27 Arms Act, and 3/2 TADA, originally registered at Police Station Nigeen and now being investigated by the SIA. A team of SIA officials searched Malik's Maisuma residence. Malik is presently lodged in New Delhi's Tihar Jail. The other locations searched by the SIA officials included the houses of Javaid Ahmad Mir @Nalka, son of Ghulam Nabi Mir, at Chamardori Zainakadal; Peer Noor ul Haq Shah @Air Marshal, son of Peer Ghulam Rasool Shah, at Illahi Bagh Bachpora; Reyaz Kabir Sheikh, son of Abdul Kabir Sheikh, at Danderkah Batamaloo; Bashir Ahmad Gojri, son of Ghulam Rasool Gojri, at Kadikadal Soklipora; Feroz Ahmad Khan @Jan Mohammad @Jana Kachroo, son of Ghulam Ahmad Khan, at Sazgaripora; Kaiser Ahmad Tiploo @Raj Tiploo, son of Ghulam Mohammad Tiploo, at Al-Hamza Colony Ahmadnagar; and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo, son of Asadullah Taploo, at Tiploo Mohalla Anchar, Srinagar.
