‘Maha Kumbh showed state's capacity to manage mega events'

Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh director general of police Prashant Kumar said that the successful conduct of Maha Kumbh-2025 was "a testament to faith, force, and foresight" — proving that the state can manage events of "civilizational proportions" through strong leadership, meticulous planning, and advanced technology. Speaking at TOI Dialogues, Kumar said: "At Maha Kumbh, infrastructure met intent, technology met tradition, and governance met faith. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 's personal oversight, resource support, and emphasis on law and order helped in the smooth execution of the 55-day congregation." Over 25,000 police personnel were deployed under a unified command system. "Every ghat was risk-assessed, every route studied, and every possible scenario — from stampedes to cyber threats — simulated and planned for," he said. Technology formed the "new trishul" of policing, with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) deploying AI-based facial recognition, drone surveillance, heat maps, real-time dashboards, GPS-enabled patrols, and body-worn cameras. Social media served as a real-time communication and grievance redressal platform, while cyber teams countered disinformation and digital fraud. Kumar highlighted the role of women police, anti-Romeo squads, traffic units, and intelligence officers, alongside humanitarian measures like 'Khoya-Paya' booths for lost children, medical aid stations, and disaster preparedness drills. Calling the event a "civilizational achievement," Kumar said it showcased New Uttar Pradesh's ability to merge security with compassion. Hi-Tech Surveillance Ensures Safe Amarnath Yatra 2025 After Pahalgam Attack

As the Amarnath pilgrimage begins, each pilgrim entering Kashmir comes under round-the-clock surveillance until they leave the Valley. To ensure a smooth and secure pilgrimage, authorities have established a state-of-the-art Digital Hi-tech Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring along the Yatra routes. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, a major challenge for security forces was ensuring the safety of pilgrims. In response, authorities upgraded the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in Srinagar with the latest technology to ensure every pilgrim remains under constant surveillance. The Hi-tech Command Centre operates 24/7 with around 120 personnel from nearly 35 government departments working in two shifts. Departments involved include the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NDRF, SDRF, Health, PHE, PDD, Telecom, and others. Approximately 101 PTZ High Definition 360-degree view cameras and over 1,052 surveillance cameras have been installed along the Yatra routes, base camps, highways, and key points like Pahalgam, Srinagar, and Baltal. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras provide aerial monitoring of remote and sensitive areas. Advanced security screening at checkpoints, live-stream monitoring, and seamless communication enable real-time coordination. The ICCC integrates data from facial recognition systems, CCTV, drones, and field reports to provide centralised monitoring and rapid response capabilities. V.K. Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, stated, 'Top security arrangements have been made for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. We have upgraded the command centre, introduced facial recognition systems, increased the number of CCTV cameras, and are conducting live monitoring. Our aim is to ensure that no pilgrim feels insecure or faces any inconvenience. We are maintaining 24/7 surveillance on both routes.' The April 2025 Pahalgam attack heightened focus on security. Upgrades to the ICCC have significantly improved threat detection and emergency response. The system not only addresses security threats but also identifies medical emergencies, potential disasters, and helps locate missing individuals. Real-time updates on Yatra progress, weather, and security alerts are provided through SASB-managed apps and websites, accessible to pilgrims and their families. Bidhuri added, 'Technology plays a crucial role in surveillance. In emergencies, RFID tags make it easier to locate pilgrims. Due to unpredictable weather, RFID also helps us manage Yatri movement tracking who has returned to camps and who is still en route. It gives pilgrims a sense of safety.' Thanks to such robust technological measures including facial recognition, CCTV networks, drones, and RFID. The 2025 Amarnath Yatra has seen an unprecedented response. Over 1.20 lakh pilgrims offered prayers in the first seven days alone, surpassing previous records and restoring confidence among devotees after the Pahalgam attack. Yatra begins: 5,880 pilgrims set off for Amarnath, under heavy security cover

Under 24×7 monitoring from a high-tech Integrated Command and Control Centre and the Police Control Room, the first batch of over 5,880 Amarnath pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu and reached the Valley on Wednesday. The 38-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas begins Thursday — from the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district as well as the 14-km, but steeper, Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The convoy was flagged off by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha. 'Wishing all spiritual seekers a safe and comfortable journey to the holy abode of Lord Shiva for a deeply soul-stirring experience. Prayed to Baba Amarnath for peace and blessings to all,' he said. This year's Amarnath pilgrimage comes more than two months after a terror attack in Pahalgam killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. An unprecedented multi-tier security cover was in place Wednesday as the convoy moved on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. 'The yatra is being monitored 24×7 from the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Raj Bhawan and the Police Control Room, while an RFID-based tracking system has also been put in place to monitor movement of yatris and their convoy on a real time basis, officials said. Of the first batch, 2489 pilgrims will undertake the yatra through Baltal and 3,403 via Pahalgam. An official said that a majority of the 3.31 lakh pilgrims who have registered for the yatra this year have chosen to go from the Pahalgam route. Last year, the yatra recorded the highest footfall in 12 years, with over five lakh devotees visiting the holy cave. A pilgrim from Mumbai, who did not want to be named, said this yatra was to also pay tribute to those killed in the April attack. 'This year's pilgrimage is a message to terrorists (that) we do not fear them,'' he said.
