Rewards startup Bilt, which made its name by offering renters the opportunity to earn points on rental payments, is building itself a lofty valuation—and introducing a handful of new cards to boot.
The company announced on Thursday that it has raised $250 million in new funding, bringing its total valuation to $10.75 billion, more than twice its valuation from roughly a year ago.
It's also introducing Bilt Card 2.0, an upgraded credit card offering that will launch in February of next year and is being developed in partnership with Cardless—which also had a hand in launching the American Express Coinbase card earlier this year.
In a blog post, Bilt said that its Card 2.0 will have three different options: A no-fee option and two premium levels with $95 and $495 annual fees.
The announcement is a sign that Wells Fargo and Bilt are ending their partnership on the Bilt Rewards Mastercard earlier than expected. The partnership had been slated to run until 2029.
That card originally launched to the public in March 2022 with a novel points-on-rent reward and quickly took off among points and miles enthusiasts. Within 18 months, it had activated 1 million accounts.
The Wall Street Journal has reported Wells Fargo was losing money on the deal, raising questions about the card's sustainability.
Both Wells Fargo and Bilt declined to comment bout the specifics of the partnership when contacted by Fast Company.
New York-based Bilt has built a $1 billion-a-year business on the strength of its rewards program, as Fast Company reported in June, and most of its revenue now comes from its partnerships with property managers. The company processes rent payments for property managers and offers their tenants access to its expanding loyalty program, which now includes some 40,000 merchants.
Jain told Fast Company that he imagined the credit card occupying a relatively modest place in his company's overall strategy. 'It's not our core business,' he said. 'Our job is to provide the best rewards ecosystem, the best commerce platform, the best [customer] acquisition, the best brand, so that our partners can create a great card product around it.' According to Jain, only 15% of Bilt's rewards program members are cardholders.
As for how things will work with Bilt Card 2.0? We'll need to wait until next year to find out. At that time, 'current cardholders will be seamlessly moved from Wells Fargo to our new card platform,' according to Bilt's blog post.
In the meantime, Bilt's leadership is exuding confidence.

'What we're building goes beyond the four walls of your apartment; we're connecting you with your entire neighborhood and making every aspect of where you live more rewarding.'

The iconic photography company Kodak could go out of business within a year. The 133-year-old American company warned investors Monday in a regulatory filing that there's 'substantial doubt' it can keep its doors open unless it pays down its debts or renegotiates its terms. In the filing, Kodak warned it has 'debt coming due within twelve months and does not have committed financing or available liquidity to meet such debt obligations if they were to become due in accordance with their current terms.' The company added that these conditions 'raise substantial doubt about Kodak's ability to continue as a going concern.' Although Kodak introduced the world's first digital camera back in 1973, the company failed to keep up with the changing times, as everyone now carries a camera in their pocket 24/7, making standalone cameras and film less relevant for most people. 'In the second quarter, Kodak continued to make progress against our long-term plan despite the challenges of an uncertain business environment,' Kodak CEO Jim Continenza said Monday in the company's second quarterly earnings report. In its latest quarter, Kodak reported a $26 million net loss. Since the end of last year, the company has burned through $46 million in cash, leaving it with just $155 million on hand. Meanwhile, Kodak is carrying roughly $500 million in debt. Kodak did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Gizmodo. However, a company spokesperson told CNN on Tuesday that it is 'confident it will be able to pay off a significant portion of its term loan well before it becomes due, and amend, extend, or refinance our remaining debt and/or preferred stock obligations.' Kodak said last year it would end its pension plan to help reduce its debt. 'The termination of our U.S. Kodak Retirement Income Plan and subsequent reversion of excess funds to pay down debt is progressing as planned,' said Kodak CFO David Bullwinkle in the company's earnings report. This isn't the first time the company has faced financial struggles. It filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Since then, the company has expanded into other industries it believes have growth potential, including commercial printing services and advanced chemical manufacturing. In 2018, Kodak even jumped on the blockchain and cryptocurrency bandwagon, announcing plans to launch a new digital token called KodakCoins. These tokens were meant to power KodakOne, a blockchain-based rights management platform designed to help photographers register and license both new and existing work through a secure digital ledger. But the project never got off the ground, and Kodak eventually scrapped the plan. Now, the company is highlighting its latest move into pharmaceuticals. The company is opening a manufacturing facility in Rochester, NY, to produce key starting ingredients for drugs.

Kodak ended the quarter with a $155 million case balance but lost $46 million from December of last year as company revenue decreased by $4 million with a $26 GAAP net loss for the quarter, according to a corporate report. "These conditions raise substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern," Kodak wrote in its filing. Company officials explained in the report that losses were due to capital expenditures and effects of higher costs. They added it was compounded by changes in the 133-year-old Kodak's working capital and lower profitability. "In the second quarter, Kodak continued to make progress against our long-term plan despite the challenges of an uncertain business environment," Kodak CEO Jim Continenza stated in the earnings release. Kodak's slow downfall arrived on the heels of years of layoffs, long-existing issues over the company's pension and retirement plan and failed attempts to expand via global investments in the Japanese market. Tuesday's news also comes months after the Rochester company announced it will terminate pension plans and use proceeds to pay down debt, which Kodak executives said is "progressing as planned." Officials at Eastman Kodak noted that some of the language deployed in its reporting was "essentially required disclosure because Kodak's debt comes due within 12 months of the filing." "Kodak is confident it will be able to pay off a significant portion of its term loan well before it becomes due, and amend, extend or refinance our remaining debt and/or preferred stock obligations," a Kodak spokesperson told News 8 in New York. The company will begin to draw on some $300 million in December from its "KRIP" pension fund settlement in order to fund the repayment, the spokesperson said. But the KRIP reversion is, according to Eastman Kodak, not solely within Kodak's control and "therefore is not deemed 'probable' under U.S. GAAP accounting rules, which is what triggered the 'going concern.'" "Once the KRIP reversion is completed Kodak will be virtually net debt free and will have a stronger balance sheet than we have had in years." Meanwhile, Eastman Kodak's stock shares dived on Tuesday more than 25% by midday trading.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said his tariffs are taking in 'trillions of dollars'—which matches estimates from some economists for revenue his levies could generate, but over the next decade, not so far this year. Trump leaves out that tariffs are paid by U.S. companies to import foreign goods, with those costs eventually paid by U.S. consumers. The U.S. has collected $142 billion from tariff revenue so far this fiscal year, which ends in September, according to Treasury Department data released Tuesday. Since Trump's tariffs took effect in April, his levies have generated about $96 billion in revenue, after customs duties jumped to $28 billion in July, marking an annual increase of 273%. Customs duties accounted for $27 billion in revenue for June, $22 billion in May and $16 billion in April. Before Trump's tariffs were announced, customs duties totaled $8 billion in March and $7 billion in February and January. Customs duties are tariffs or taxes paid by importers in international trade, meaning companies, businesses or individuals in the U.S. are required to pay levies as goods enter the country. Consumers tend to carry the weight of tariff costs as companies adjust prices to offset or absorb the effects of tariffs. How Much Revenue Will Trump's Tariffs Generate? Even Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told MSNBC earlier this month he expects tariffs would generate $300 billion annually, noting 'there's a chance that could be higher' in 2026. The Tax Foundation projected Trump's tariffs would raise about $2.5 trillion over the next decade, even as the levies will likely raise the price of common goods and taxes for the average household by nearly $1,300 in 2025 and $1,700 in 2026. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a public policy nonprofit, expects Trump's tariffs to generate $2.8 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product by fiscal year 2034 if they continue. Inflation jumped lower than expected to 2.7% in July, though core consumer prices—a measurement that excludes food and energy—rose 3.1% year-over-year, matching a high this year set in January. It appears Trump's tariffs have raised prices, and some economists have warned his levies could hike costs through the end of the year. JPMorgan Chase's chief U.S. economist, Michael Feroli, argued in a note earlier this year that Trump's tariffs would result in 'meaningfully larger increases' to consumer prices and higher inflation at some point this year. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said last month that while the U.S. economy was in a 'solid position,' the effects of tariffs on the economy and inflation 'remain to be seen.' Tangent Trump said last month his administration would 'consider' sending checks based on the revenue his tariffs have generated. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introduced a bill after Trump signaled interest in a rebate check, which would send at least $600 to each eligible adult and dependent child this year. A larger rebate check would be issued if tariff revenue exceeds projections, according to a draft of the bill, which reduces the rate by 5% to about $570 for joint filers with an adjusted gross income above $150,000, a head of household with an income above $112,500 or an individual whose income exceeds $75,000.
