Expressing happiness, B Prabhakaran, managing director of LMEL, said that the achievement became possible with the support of the local communities and the LMEL team. "The five-star rating under the SDF developed by the ministry of mines is indeed a matter of great pride for LMEL and the people of Gadchiroli. It reflects our commitment to inclusive growth without adversely affecting the social, economic and environmental well-being.
We will keep working to realise the dream of making Green Steel in Gadchiroli district," he added.
The five-star rating recognised operational excellence and green innovation in operating the Surjagarh Iron Ore Mines with capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum since the last two years. Under the Green Mining initiatives, emphasis has been placed on use of battery-operated heavy equipment, LNG vehicles, and electric-powered drills including the world's first electric compressor excavator-mounted drill.
LMEL follows the best environmental sustainability practices in the areas of air, water, and dump management.
As far as socio-economic transformation is concerned, LMEL's positive impact extends far beyond mining. It has catalyzed a socio-economic renaissance in tribal communities through various initiatives including CBSE-affiliated Lloyds Raj Vidya Niketan school at Hedari, modern healthcare facilities at Lloyds Kali Ammal Memorial Hospital, garment manufacturing units with the brand name 'Vanya' powered by local women, driver training institutes, sports training facilities, skill training initiatives, empowerment of local communities etc.

City's Multi-Modal Transport Hub Gets Green Light, State Clears Land-Use Change Near Station
Nagpur: Maharashtra govt formally sanctioned changes to Nagpur's city development plan, clearing the decks for the much-delayed Multi-Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) near railway station. The project, intended to integrate bus, Metro, rail, and commercial services, now gained traction with the official conversion of key land parcels from public and institutional use into commercial zone. The decision was notified by the urban development department on July 28 and disclosed to the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court on Thursday. During the hearing, Justices Mukulika Jawalkar and Praveen Patil were informed that the land earmarked for the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh state road transport corporations, along with a portion occupied by Nehru Model High School in Mouza Sitabuldi, would now be part of the MMTH layout. The court was also told that these lands were reclassified for commercial use in line with the revised development plan. The move follows the civic body's earlier failure to reserve space for vendors displaced by the demolition of an old flyover near the station, prompting the court to question the govt's "contradictory stance" on rehabilitation. Advocate Mahesh Dhatrak, appearing for the petitioners, reminded the bench that the court had previously directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to provide alternative space to displaced vendors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The new plan now includes vendor resettlement within a proposed multi-storey parking facility on the MMTH site. The sanctioned notification imposes three conditions before execution: A no objection certificate (NOC) from the defence department for overlapping land; legal compliance with pending litigation regarding MPSRTC land (Writ Petition No. 609/2019); and NOCs from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and Railways. MahaMetro was directed to respond within three weeks on acquisition procedures, and the state govt must also clarify funding provisions. The govt stated, "Lands so released are shown as 'Multi-Modal Transport Hub' as per the sanctioned plan." The updated zoning map is open for public inspection at the NMC commissioner's office for one month.

Gulf leads in migration with Saudi having highest Indian ECR workers
Mangaluru: Indian blue-collar workers constitute a significant portion of the workforce in several Gulf countries, notably Saudi Arabia. Recent data from five years indicates a strong trend of migration to the Gulf region for employment, particularly in the construction sector and other labour-intensive industries. Between Jan 2020 and June 2025, according to data shared by the ministry of external affairs in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, Indian expats working in blue-collar jobs are present in 14 countries, accounting for 16,06,964 individuals. The substantial number of Emigration Check Required (ECR) category workers in these countries underscores the economic ties and labour dynamics between India and the Gulf. Among the 14 countries, Saudi Arabia has the highest number of Indian workers, including those engaged in construction and labour-intensive work. The country currently has 695,269 workers, followed by the UAE (3,41,365 workers), Kuwait (2,01,959 workers), Qatar (1,53,501 workers), and Oman (1,16,840 workers). According to employers, mainly from Gulf countries, the revival of infrastructure and labour demand in Gulf countries started to see a notable surge in 2022 and 2023, with the highest number of workers (3,98,000) sent abroad in 2023 alone. In 2023, Saudi Arabia alone employed 2,00,713 labourers and 1,67,598 in 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In 2020 and 2021, the total number of blue-collar labourers moving abroad was 94,145 and 132,675, respectively. This year, as of June 2025, Saudi Arabia has recruited 71,175 workers; however, the UAE has the highest number, with 96,401 workers employed. Althaf Ullal, MD and CEO of Saad Al Qahtani Contracting (SAQCO) based in Al Khobar, said Saudi Arabia is experiencing a construction boom due to Vision 2030 projects, such as NEOM and The Line. Factors why Indian workers are preferred include their experience, reliability, and skills in construction trades, and understand Gulf culture and adapt easily. KA Sheikh Karnire, operations director at Expertise Contracting Company Limited in Saudi Arabia, also echoed Althaf's views. "Our company alone trains and recruits 4,000-5,000 blue-collar workers from India, including temporary assignments in Saudi Arabia," he said. Kuwait is also experiencing a high demand for labourers due to attractive compensation packages compared to other Gulf countries, according to Akash S Panwar, a Kuwait-based expatriate who has been running a construction company for the past two decades. Welfare measures The Union govt implemented multiple measures to protect and assist blue collar workers in times of distress. They include toll-free helplines, WhatsApp support, and mobile apps via Indian missions; Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendras (PBSKs) in key cities; Pre-Departure Orientation and Training (PDOT) and the Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojna (PBBY) for safer migration. Also, the utilisation of the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) worth Rs 703 crore since inception has benefited over 3.5 lakh Indians with legal, medical, and emergency assistance abroad.
