Paul Merson predicts Mikel Arteta sacking could be surprisingly close
Arsenal almost certainly secured a third straight second-place finish in the Premier League this season thanks to a 1-0 win over Newcastle at the Emirates on Sunday.
It has been another good campaign, which included an impressive run to the semi-finals of the Champions League, but it will be another without silverware for Arsenal.
Arteta took over in 2019 and his only major trophy remains the FA Cup in 2020, despite clear progress being made under the Spaniard.
Merson reckons consistency will only get Arteta so far and unless he is in contention to win the Premier League title at Christmas time then the Arsenal hierarchy could decide to swing the axe.

'Problem is with this Arsenal team. I'm trying to back them up and say they're a good team but you've got to win something,' Merson said on Sky Sports. 'It's not easy. Every time it gets to the latter stages they go and that would be my worry.
'I think Arteta's got till Christmas till everybody starts…they will have to be in the top two at Christmas to keep on going.
'I think next season. If you get to four [seasons] then no, you can't [keep going].
'Everybody wants to play for Arsenal, people will come to Arsenal, so it's not like they're struggling to get players and they've got the money.
'For me, next year he's got to be in the top two by Christmas or they'll go for someone else, they will!'
Merson believes Arsenal are in a good enough position to be lifting trophies and must get their hands on silverware while they are in such a state, because it can all go wrong very quickly.
'It's timing. When it's your time you've got to make it count,' he said. 'You see it go in circles. Look at Liverpool, they went 30 years without a title, a club like that! Then it comes round and they win trophies.
'You've got to make it count. Man United were dominant, look at them now! I just think they have to make it count.'
Merson is sympathetic to Arteta, hailing the job he has done with the club and noting that he has been dealing with notable injuries this season.
However, he will have less sympathy for his former club if they do not sign a new striker this summer, as Merson feels that problem is clear and obvious. More Trending
'If you look at the all-round picture, four/five years ago they were also-rans, the club's gone, it's going nowhere. He [Arteta] put the heart back in the club,' he said. 'The fans are here, they turn up every week again. They're not far away, they need a centre forward.
'A couple of injuries here and there and I know people go, 'everyone has injuries', no, they don't. Not to key, key players. I always say it, if you took [Mohamed] Salah and [Virgil van] Dijk out of that Liverpool team, believe me that is not winning the league if they're out for a long period of time.
'And that's what's happened, [Bukayo] Saka's a big player for them, [Kai] Havertz, people have a go at him, he's a big player. When he hasn't been playing he's been missed.
'They need a couple of players. I hope he doesn't end up like [Arsene] Wenger did a couple of years into his reign when everyone knew they needed a centre-back. They need a centre forward.'

The real reason why Marc Guehi snubbed Oliver Glasner after Crystal Palace clash
Marc Guehi appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Crystal Palace's draw at Chelsea fuelling speculation about his future at the club. However, it appears not all was as it seemed as there was a valid reason why the England international walked away from his manager. A week after leading Palace to glory in the Community Shield, Guehi starred as the Eagles were held to a goalless draw in their Premier League opener on Sunday. But the centre-back's time at Selhurst Park may be coming to an end as he has entered the last year of his contract and has been strongly linked with a transfer to Liverpool. Reports suggest the 25-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Reds but the two clubs are still apart in their valuation of the Eagles captain. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Following Sunday's game at Stamford Bridge, Guehi applauded the away end and was making his way back to the tunnel when Glasner called out to him. The defender seemed to look up and notice his manager before ignoring his request to speak with him and continue toward the tunnel, leaving Glasner visibly baffled. Some speculated that the incident may have had something to do with the ongoing transfer saga, but, according to News Shopper, that is not the case at all. 🗣️ "It's like the new garlic bread" Roy Keane's thoughts on that Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi interaction at full-time of Chelsea vs Crystal Palace… — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 Instead, it is said that Guehi was randomly selected to undergo a routine drug test immediately after the full-time whistle. Having already greeted the travelling fans, the Three Lions star was keen to get on with the test and what appeared to be a tense moment between player and manager was actually just a bit of miscommunication. Glasner will no doubt clarify what happened when he speaks ahead of Palace's Conference League play-off first-leg against Fredrikstad on Thursday. Palace face the prospect of losing both Guehi and Tottenham target Eberechi Eze before the transfer window closes but Glasner has praised the pair for their professionalism despite the ongoing rumours. More Trending 'Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week. Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool and today, they were 100 per cent aligned with this team and Crystal Palace,' the Austrian said. 'As long as they are 100 per cent committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training, I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Bournemouth sign Liverpool winger Ben Doak in deal worth up to £25million
Bournemouth have completed the signing of winger Ben Doak from Premier League rivals Liverpool in a deal worth up to £25million. The 19-year-old Scotland international has agreed a five-year contract at Vitality Stadium. Doak spent last season on loan at Championship club Middlesbrough, scoring three goals and registering seven assists in 24 appearances. Bournemouth are understood to have paid an initial £20m and could spend a further £5m in add-ons as they reinvest some of the funds received from a series of lucrative summer departures. Forward Dango Ouattara finalised a £42.5m move to Brentford at the weekend, while the south-coast club had already sold defenders Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively for a total of around £150m. Doak is the Cherries' fourth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, left-back Adrien Truffert and centre-back Bafode Diakite for a combined sum in the region of £70m. He could make his debut during Saturday's top-flight fixture at home to Wolves. Doak, who has six Scotland caps, began his career with Celtic before moving to Merseyside for £600,000 in 2022. The teenager played 10 times for Liverpool, including three substitute appearances in the Premier League. He was not involved on Friday evening when Arne Slot's reigning champions defeated the Cherries 4-2 in the season-opener at Anfield.

Who will win Rangers vs Club Brugge? Our writers deliver predictions for Champions League playoff first leg
Russell Martin kicks off a massive week at home to the Belgians with £40million on the line over 180 minutes They've done battle before this summer, but this time it's serious. Club Brugge visited Ibrox for a pre-season friendly in what was Russell Martin 's first game in charge as Rangers manager. They raced into a 2-0 lead and looked like they could make things very uncomfortable for the new boss, but his men fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw. That would probably be an acceptable outcome on Tuesday night, although the risk of giving the visitors a two-goal head start is much more significant given what's a stake, so best avoided. Nicky Hayen's side showed the other side of Glasgow what they were about last season and could count themselves very unlucky to only leave Celtic Park with a solitary Champions League point after an impressive display. If that's the standard of performance, then Rangers will need to step it up if they want to bank the Euro jackpot they've seen funnelled into the Parkhead coffers only for too long now. Here's how the Record Sport team see it going. Scott McDermott This will be the biggest test of Russell Martin's Rangers tenure so far, by a distance. The Belgians are a top outfit, as they proved at Celtic Park in the Champions League last season. Their skipper Hans Vanaken will run the game if he's allowed to play and they've got real threats in attack, like Christos Tzolis. Given Gers' current form, it's difficult to see them winning and a first-leg draw might not be the worst result before a trip to Brugge. Rangers 1 Club Brugge 1 Andy Newport There's no doubt Russell Martin's team are yet to click fully into gear but they have looked their most comfortable at home in Europe. The Belgians will be their stiffest test yet but with Ibrox roaring Gers on, they can grab a result that keeps the tie alive heading into the second leg. Whether it will be enough to secure a £40million Champions League windfall remains to be seen. Rangers 1 Club Brugge 1 Gavin Berry The Belgians were class at times in the Champions League last season but don't look quite as daunting after the loss of key men Ardon Jashari, Maxim De Cuyper and Chemsdine Talbi in big money moves. Rangers need to raise their game big time but can rise to the occasion, albeit that might still only be enough for a draw. Rangers 1 Club Brugge 1 Michael Gannon Rangers have looked shaky at the back and it could really catch up with them against a team that loves to you, Brugge looked decent last term but have lost a few of their star men though and lack a bit of experience. It could be an open game and Gers can at least be alive going to Belgium next week. Rangers 2 Brugge 2 Graeme Young Decisive home wins in the earlier rounds will count for little against a Brugge side who defeated Atalanta, Aston Villa and Sporting last season in the tournament proper. Expect the Belgians to feast on errors but Martin's side have enough firepower to keep it close for the return leg. Rangers 2 Brugge 3 Scott Burns There is no doubt this will be a step up from what Rangers have faced this season. I still think they can get a result that would make it all to play for over in Belgium, but their defence has to be on the money and disciplined. Rangers 1 Club Brugge 1
