Judge orders LA prosecutors to explain why Menendez brothers' conviction shouldn't be re-examined

Washington Post4 days ago
LOS ANGELES — A judge has ordered Los Angeles prosecutors to explain why Erik and Lyle Menendez's murder convictions should not be re-examined in light of new evidence supporting their claims of sexual abuse by their father.
The July 7 order by LA County Superior Court Judge William Ryan was in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by the Menendez brothers in May 2023 seeking a review of their 1996 convictions for the killings of their parents based on new evidence.

Three dead after explosion at sheriff training facility in Los Angeles

An explosion at a law enforcement training facility in Los Angeles that left three people dead is being investigated as a possible training accident, officials said. The explosion was reported around 7.30am on Friday at the Biscailuz Training Facility, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida. Tragically, she said, three members of the department died. It was not immediately known what caused the explosion or what the department members were doing at the time. An early line of the investigation was looking at a possible training accident, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter who spoke to the Associated Press. US attorney general Pam Bondi in a post on X said it 'appears to be a horrific incident'. She said federal agents are at the scene to learn more. 'Please pray for the families of the sheriff's deputies killed,' Ms Bondi wrote. Arson investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles Fire Department and members of the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad were assisting at the training facility, Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass said in a post on X. California governor Gavin Newsom's office said he has been briefed on the situation. Aerial footage from KABC-TV showed the explosion happened in a car park filled with sheriff patrol cars and trucks.
