BJP urges State govt to enact Advocates Protection Act

Hyderabad: Amid growing concern over the safety of legal professionals, Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao called upon the Congress-led state government to introduce an 'Advocates Protection Act.' Speaking at a gathering organised by the Kothagudem Bar Association on Wednesday, Rao emphasised that incidents of violence and intimidation against advocates have been rising across the state, warranting urgent legislative intervention. Rao stated that soon after assuming charge as party president, he formally wrote to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, citing examples from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh where similar Acts are already in force. 'We have also submitted a memorandum to the Governor pressing for immediate implementation,' he noted. Highlighting the legacy of lawyers in India's independence struggle and regional movements, including Telangana's statehood movement, Rao underscored the pivotal role played by advocates in social and political transformation. 'Their contribution is deeply woven into our history and democracy,' he said. Rao also touched upon the evolving nature of politics, urging citizens with a strong public service intent to enter political life. 'Politics should be a platform for service, not profit,' he remarked. Expressing concern over the influx of wealthy individuals and real estate magnates into public office, he said that over 250 sitting MPs in Parliament hail from legal backgrounds—a testimony to the strength of advocacy in public affairs. During the program, the Kothagudem Bar Association, led by its President Lakkeneni Satyanarayana, submitted a memorandum to Rao outlining key demands. These included the establishment of a family court, SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Special Court, and a labour court at Bhadradri Kothagudem. The association also called for the extension of the health card scheme to newly enrolled advocates and an increase in medical insurance coverage from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per family. The event concluded with calls for better representation of legal professionals in policymaking and stronger institutional safeguards to ensure their protection and well-being.

‘Historic blunder' remark twisted out of context: AIADMK MLA

THOOTHUKUDI: After allegedly stating that AIADMK's exit from the BJP-led coalition government in 1998 was a 'historic blunder', former minister and Kovilpatti MLA Kadambur Raju on Wednesday said his remarks have been twisted out of context by people with vested interests. While speaking in a joint meeting of BJP and AIADMK functionaries two days ago, ahead of Edappadi K Palaniswami's visit to Thoothukudi, Raju had allegedly stated his party had made a 'historic blunder' by withdrawing support to BJP in 1998. 'This paved the way for DMK to support BJP and share power in the union government which continued for 14 years. BJP had empowered DMK, however, the latter has no respect for it,' Raju had said. After the remarks were widely circulated on social media, Raju clarified that his speech has been twisted by vested interests, and that he never used the term 'historic blunder'. Raju said he meant that AIADMK's exit from the BJP coalition resulted in DMK allying with BJP. 'I was speaking about the narrative that AIADMK's alliance with the saffron party is bad, whereas it was good when DMK allied with it,' Raju explained.

Maharashtra to cancel 42,000 fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals by Aug 15

The state government will cancel over 42,000 fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Maharashtra by August 15, state revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Bawankule said the figure could rise as verification continues. 'By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis staying illegally in the state will be cancelled,' he said, adding that the revenue and health departments have been directed to coordinate on the matter. The minister also held a video conference with the state Chief Secretary to review the progress of the exercise. The issue gained attention earlier this year after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that 3,997 birth certificates had been fraudulently issued to Bangladeshi nationals using forged documents. Following the allegation, two officials posted in Malegaon were suspended. In March, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam told the Maharashtra Assembly that the government had ramped up its crackdown on illegal immigrants over the past four years. 109 Bangladeshis were deported in 2021,77 in 2022,127 in 2023 and in 2024, 716 arrests and 202 deportations have been recorded so far. Until March 2024, action had been taken against 600 more Bangladeshi nationals found living illegally in Maharashtra.
