Harvard Women's basketball makes NCAA Tournament for first time since 2007

CBS News17-03-2025
The Harvard Women's basketball team in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 after claiming the school's first-ever Ivy League Tournament championship over the weekend.
The Crimson beat Columbia, 74-71, on Saturday to win the Ivy League Tournament for the first time in school history. Harmoni Turner led the way for Harvard with 24 points and captured tournament MVP honors, which capped off an incredible weekend for the Crimson's senior guard. In Harvard's semifinal win over Princeton on Friday, Turner scored 44 points to set new conference tournament and school records for most points in a game.
Harvard will be dancing this March as a 10-seed in the Regional 1 bracket. The Crimson will face 7-seeded Michigan State at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, North Carolina at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
This marks Harvard's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 18 years and the school's first under head coach Carrie Moore, who guided the Crimson to a 24-4 record in the regular season. Turner was Harvard's top player this year after averaging 22.5 points off 44 percent shooting from the floor. She surpassed 2,000 points for her career over the weekend to become just the third player in Harvard history to reach the milestone.
The Crimson have a tough matchup against Michigan State, which went 21-9 and finished fifth in the Big Ten. But Harvard showed it could compete with some of the biggest programs in the nation early in the season, with wins over both Big Ten powerhouses Indiana (which was ranked No. 25 at the time) and Northwestern in November.
"It gives us a little extra confidence in that, hey, we've been in this situation before against a Big Ten, power-five team," senior guard Elana Rodriguez told WBZ-TV's Steve Burton on Sunday. "I think we can do it one more time. As we always say, third time's the charm."
Harvard closed the season with nine wins over its last 10 games, and will look to pull off a pretty big upset next weekend. The Crimson have the biggest upset in women's tournament history, as the 1998 team upset top-seeded Stanford as a 16-seed. Harvard made it to the round of 32 that season, which was the school's best performance in an NCAA Tournament.

Could USC have its own version of Ashton Jeanty?

Last year the best running back in college football was undoubtedly Ashton Jeanty. He ran for 2,601 yards on 7.0 yards per carry for 29 rushing touchdowns in 14 games at Boise State. USC new transfer and Doak Walker Award watch list nominee Waymond Jordan could be the Trojans' own version of Ashton Jeanty with his similar build and play style. Last season, similar to Jeanty, Jordan had a dominant average of 7.4 yards per carry for 1,614 yards while averaging 134.5 yards per game with 20 touchdowns in 12 games. Jordan won NJCAA DI Football Offensive Player of the Year and led his team to the 2024 NJCAA DI football championship. He ran through defenses every week last season in the NJCCA. He recorded nine games of 100 or more rushing yards and two games with over 200 yards. He is an extremely explosive back; with every carry he is running with bad intentions for the end zone. The Big Ten is known for producing high quality running backs. What better place for Waymond Jordan to take his talents than to running back university? To compete at a high level in the Big Ten, teams need a dominant run game. With some talented additions at the running back position, the Trojans are looking to do just that this season. As things stand currently Jordan is in the lead to be the bellcow back for the Trojans this season. If he can put up anything similar to the production he had last season, this Trojan offense will be a nightmare for opponents. With full-time starting quarterback Jayden Maiva having control over this offense, giving him and this Trojan passing attack a complementary run game that strikes fear in opposing defenses will make USC a playoff-caliber team.

Spartans target, 3-star QB Cooper Newman to reportedly visit MSU next month

Michigan State football to reportedly host a three-star quarterback prospect in the 2027 class for a visit next month. Cooper Newman of Sevierville, Tenn. will reportedly visit Michigan State for their home game against Boston College on September 6. Ryan O'Bleness of Spartans Illustrated reported the notable visit for Newman. Newman is a three-star prospect with recruiting rating of 82.33 in Rivals' Industry Ranking system. He ranks as the No. 48 quarterback and No. 563 overall prospect in the class. Michigan State is one of more than 10 schools to extend an offer to Newman, according to On3. Other schools to offer Newman were Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Northwestern, Maryland, Appalachian State, Marshall, Toledo, Gardner-Webb and Bowling Green. Newman is one of many big-name visitors coming to Michigan State for a game this fall, with the Boston College matchup in week two being a massive recruiting weekend for the Spartans. Adding Newman to that list is promising and makes this weekend even bigger for the Spartans' recruitment in the 2027 class.
