Preparing for perfect challenges, Blue Tigers caravan reaches Thailand for friendly game
Pathum Thani [Thailand], May 29 (ANI): After completing the Kolkata leg of their training camp, the Indian men's national football team landed in Thailand just past midnight on Thursday. The Blue Tigers will play a friendly match against the hosts on June 4 ahead of the crucial Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Qualifiers Final Round match versus Hong Kong on June 10.
This is the third time the Indian senior men's team have visited the Land of Smiles in the past six years. India previously participated in the 2019 and 2023 King's Cup, winning the bronze medal in the former after beating Thailand 1-0, which was the last meeting between these two sides, as per an All India Football Federation (AIFF) press release.
While the King's Cups were held in Buriram and Chiang Mai, respectively, the upcoming friendly will take place at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani, a venue the Blue Tigers have never played in before. However, the Blue Colts have -- as recently as 2023 in the AFC U17 Asian Cup. India drew 1-1 with Vietnam and lost 0-1 against Uzbekistan at the Thammasat Stadium.
Midfielder Brandon Fernandes, who made his India debut at the 2019 King's Cup in Buriram against Curacao, is up for the challenge in Pathum Thani. He also spent the last pre-season with his club Mumbai City FC in Thailand, so it is safe to say, he is quite familiar with the country, its weather, and playing conditions.
'It is always different when you play away from home. We are familiar with Thailand because we played the King's Cup here. This one is going to be a different game -- an international friendly. There will be more fans supporting the home team, and it's a challenge for us. We have to be ready for it and go there with a mindset to win the game,' the 30-year-old told the-aiff.com.
Team India's hotel is situated in the heart of Pathum Thani, approximately 50 kilometres north of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Pathum Thani, one of Thailand's 76 provinces and part of the Bangkok metropolitan area, is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
The Thammasat Stadium, part of the Thammasat University campus, was built for the 1998 Asian Games. The Indian women's team also played two matches in the group stage of the Asiad Games.
Right now, the Blue Tigers' primary aim is to qualify for the Asian Cup in 2027, and Fernandes feels that the preparations for the Hong Kong game are on the right track.
'Everybody is looking fit after the camp in Kolkata. We also had a couple of practice games. We are in much better shape as we head into the Thailand leg of the camp. We'll have a few more training sessions here, and we will be ready for the game.'
'Thailand will be a perfect challenge for us in order to prepare for the Hong Kong game. We have to put our best foot forward and look for a positive result. Everybody has put in the work, those hard yards, and yes -- with the way we train and are putting in the shifts, I think we will get a good result,' Fernandes said. (ANI)

Adani considers entering airport ground handling bids after Celebi's exit
Billionaire Gautam Adani's conglomerate is considering bidding for ground handling services at two airports, as it looks to diversify into a new line of business after India shut out Turkish operator Celebi Hava Servisi AS. Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. is 'evaluating' bids for the airports in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal said on the sidelines of an aviation industry event in New Delhi. A closely held unit of the flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd., it operates eight Indian airports including these two and an upcoming facility in Navi Mumbai. The foray aligns with the ports-to-power conglomerate's strategy of branching into allied sectors that dovetail with its existing businesses. It also fills a gap left by Celebi's sudden exit last month after India's civil aviation security agency revoked its security clearance on grounds related to national security. Celebi operated at nine airports in India, including gateway facilities in capital New Delhi and the commercial hub of Mumbai. Its operations were halted after Turkey voiced support for Pakistan during its recent armed conflict with India. Adani, if it wins the bids for Mumbai and Ahmedabad, will be the third ground handler at these facilities. Indian regulations require that every major airport with annual passenger traffic of at least a million should have three ground handlers. The country's aviation industry is seen booming in the coming years, with continuing investments from major airlines and infrastructure buildout by the government. India, which has over 140 operational airports, plans to more than double it to 350 by 2047.

Processing emotions quickly comes naturally to reigning world champion D. Gukesh, an effective tool in his effort to tame new challenges, said his Polish coach Grzegorz Gajewski, asserting that losses make him return to the board more committed. Gukesh hasn't enjoyed a great run post his world title win against Ding Liren last year in Singapore. At the ongoing Norway Chess, he lost the first two games to world No.1 Magnus Carlsen and compatriot Arjun Erigaisi. But he turned the tables in the return matches of the six-player double round-robin tournament to jump to second spot on the points table. On how Gukesh processed his emotions after beating Carlsen in Round 6 to be ready for the test against Erigaisi the next day, Gajewski said, 'He was just focused on the game (against Erigaisi). It was nice, definitely very nice (to beat Carlsen in Round 6 on Sunday), but today (Monday) is a new challenge and after that there is another challenge,' said Gajewski. A calm Gukesh got the better of Erigaisi a day after catching Carlsen off-guard to secure his first Classical win against his Indian opponent to make it two wins in a row, which placed him in contention for the title here. So, that's a very big success in terms of how the (previous) tournament ended,' added the Polish coach, who started touring with Gukesh in 2023. 'We enjoy the good wins and we enjoy the points, but we try to move on and focus on the next games,' he said. The coach said that Norway Chess had given Gukesh the confidence that even if he starts on a losing note, he can still stage a comeback to be in contention for the title. Gukesh was placed sixth and last after losing the first two games. 'This (staging a comeback) is a very nice thing to achieve for him because, from now on, every next tournament, if he starts badly, he will know that it doesn't necessarily have to be a bad tournament for him. So, we know what is the desired mindset for the game,' he noted. On whether he is just obsessed with chess or does he play some other games as well to tune up for tournaments, Gajewski said, Gukesh does play tennis and squash. 'Obviously, tennis has a big influence in his life apart from chess. A little bit of pickleball, especially when we travel to America, because it's far more popular there. Hopefully, here on the rest day, we'll either play squash or padel because this is what we played the last time we came here. 'It's not like he's looking for an excuse to get out of the zone, but he understands that it's very useful,' the coach added. Gajewski said it made perfect sense to move away from the high pressure situation of chess after a match or two. '… Because to be fully focused and 100 percent motivated in your preparation for the next opponent is very energy draining. So, it makes a lot of sense and it's very useful for a player to be able to get out of the zone for a couple of hours, have some sports, go for a walk, enjoy it. 'And then you come back, sort of a small reset. So, he definitely understands the importance and value of that,' the coach said.
