Merged districts of erstwhile tribal areas of KP: PTI rejects revival of jirga system
Speaking at a press conference, acting PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan – flanked by senior leaders Shah Farman and party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram – described the panel, led by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam and constituted on June 25, as an unconstitutional intrusion into provincial jurisdiction.
'After the 25th Constitutional Amendment, full authority over the jirga system in the merged districts of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) lies with the provincial government,' Gohar said. 'There is no legal basis for this federal committee.'
He added that PTI had not participated in any of the committee's meetings and the restoration of the tribal jirga system was never formally discussed.
Calling the erstwhile FATA areas extremely sensitive, Gohar demanded that the federal panel be disbanded without delay. He noted PTI's strong electoral presence in the region, pointing out that five of the seven MNAs and 14 of the 17 MPAs from the erstwhile tribal areas belong to the party.
Party spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram accused the federal government of unnecessary interference and claimed it had withheld over Rs70 billion in funds allocated to the former FATA. He questioned the rationale behind establishing a new jirga mechanism when one already exists.
Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman said the FATA merger in 2018 was carried out to bring development to the region, and legislation was enacted to empower elected representatives from FATA.
He emphasized that funds and administrative responsibilities were to be handled by elected provincial representatives, not the federal government.
He also stated that a review of the now-defunct Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) was under consideration, alongside efforts to align local governance with that of Pakistan's settled areas.
He added that the merger had been completed through an agreement between the federal and provincial governments.
'The tribal people were, are, and will remain who they are… we cannot change their way of life,' he said. 'The privileges granted to FATA were meant to be enhanced, not reduced,' he maintained.

PTI slams sugar price hike, demands judicial inquiry
LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab has strongly condemned what it terms a massive surge in sugar prices, alleging mismanagement, deliberate malpractice in sugar supply, and unchecked empowerment of the sugar mafia. In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the party demanded that either the official rate of Rs 165 per kg for sugar be strictly enforced or the government should publicly withdraw this promise. It also called for an immediate judicial inquiry into the price hike and duty-free sugar imports. The PTI Punjab further demanded that all sugar import/export permits issued since 2023 be made public, and that strict penalties and legal action be taken against sugar mills violating agreements. The party also urged the reactivation and empowerment of all relevant regulatory institutions, including the FIA, FBR, SECP, and CCP. According to PTI Punjab Media Cell Head Shayan Bashir, 'The sugar mafia, which continues to exploit the public through unjustified profiteering, and their patrons, inept and corrupt rulers, have set the official price of sugar at Rs 165 per kg, yet it is being sold in markets for Rs 180 to Rs 210 per kg.' He added, 'There is no visible check and balance on sugar supply and pricing in the province, which was a clear reflection of the worst kind of mismanagement. The largest province of Pakistan cannot be run through glamorous advertisements and TikTok theatrics. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz may be a good actress in front of the camera, but governance is not run through selfies or reels. Governing a province was not a scripted show; it is the real world, and unfortunately, she has completely failed in it.' Bashir said the ongoing sugar crisis was a glaring example of governmental incompetence and elite favouritism. He alleged that the sugar mill mafia was rewarded through artificial shortages, followed by duty-free sugar imports that benefited select importers while the public suffered due to inflation. 'The powerful few made billions, with full state support,' he said. He further claimed, 'The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has labelled this duty-free import policy a clear violation of Pakistan's economic reform commitments. It not only undermines fiscal discipline but also adds a new burden on an already devastated economy. During the PTI government, an inquiry commission was constituted to investigate the sugar crisis, and all those involved were held accountable; even close allies like Jahangir Tareen were not given any concessions.' Bashir maintained that under the current regime, the public has been crushed under the weight of inflation while the rulers remain apathetic and the media is silent. 'The truth was being buried under a flood of advertisements, and there was no one to hear the public's cry. Even the pain of inflation has now fallen victim to vested interests. Maid who 'robbed employers' makes startling revelations
A domestic worker accused of drugging and looting her employers in multiple cities has made startling revelations during interrogation by Defence police. Police investigators found that the suspect, Farzana Kausar, alias Mehreen, had previously received a commendation from the former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan for her sewing work while serving a jail sentence at the Adiala Jail in the federal capital. Imran was the guest of honour of the ceremony, she claimed. It is a common practice in prisons to invite political prisoners to ceremonies like awarding of certificates for various courses and the religious and national holidays. According to SSP Investigation for District South Ali Hassan, Farzana, who originally hails from Faisalabad, has a long record of theft cases registered against her in several cities, including Lahore. In the latest incident, she was arrested in connection with a December 2024 case lodged by Shaukat Mehmood at Defence police station, accusing her of drugging his family with sedative-laced green tea and fleeing with jewellery, cash, and valuables worth over Rs6.5 million. Police said Farzana was tracked down using technical surveillance. During interrogation, she confessed to carrying out similar thefts in Clifton, DHA, and Gizri areas, as well as in Rawalpindi, with further investigations underway to trace her network and recover stolen valuables.

PA negotiations falter over written assurance
The government's insistence on a written commitment from the opposition to adhere to several conditions regarding the conduct of Punjab Assembly members threatens to push the negotiations between both sides towards a deadlock. Sources told The Express Tribune that the demand had not been discussed amongst PTI lawmakers at length owing to their engagements in a recently launched movement. A decision on the matter will be taken in a parliamentary party meeting in the coming days. However, the sources said majority of the PTI members were averse to making the written commitment to the negotiation committee constituted to resolve the matter of suspension and looming references against 26 PTI MPAs over disruption of a speech of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The government negotiation committee had placed the conditions, including avoiding foul language and sloganeering, violation of human rights, and assuring strict implementation of Rule 223 of the Rules of Procedure of The Provincial Assembly of The Punjab 1997 before the opposition members with a demand for a written commitment. The sources said the opposition appeared inclined to trying to persuade the committee not to seek the written assurance. They said the opposition members believed that the move was aimed at ensuring complete silence during the speeches of the chief minister, which they were averse to promising. The opposition is likely to question the need to reiterate in writing what was already written in the assembly rules. However, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has stressed that the opposition would have to submit the written assurance because it had earlier back paddled from its commitments. The sources said that if the opposition would agree to not interrupt anyone's speech, it would not submit a written assurance in this regard.
