Indian shuttlers haven't lived up to their potential: Gopichand

Time of India2 days ago
Nagpur: Legendary badminton coach
Pullela Gopichand
minced no words while assessing the current state of Indian badminton, stating that most players have not yet fulfilled their true potential. Speaking at a talk organised under the Orange City Literature Festival by Raisoni Foundation, Gopichand called out a culture of complacency and over-celebration that he believes is hurting long-term performance.
Gopi Chand, who is a Dronacharya awardee, said, "You might be World No.1, you might stay there for years, but if you don't live up to your full potential, you've still failed." The coach also emphasised that real success lies in sustained excellence — not just a few wins. "Look at Lee Chong Wei — 11 consecutive Malaysian Open titles. That's dominance. That's what I call good performance. We must chase performance, not just medals," he said, adding that Indian shuttlers often 'over-celebrate average wins' and lose consistency as a result.
The former shuttler, who has the prestigious All England Open title under his belt, added that the system often focuses only on the top five players, while ignoring the next 40 who also need mentoring. "Every coach wants to train the top five, who seem likely to win championships. But the rest are often left behind. That's not how it should work," he said.
Gopichand also believes the country has only scratched the surface of its true badminton capability.
"In 1994, we didn't even qualify for the Commonwealth Games. Now we've won the Thomas Cup. But there's so much more we can do. If India isn't on top, we must blame ourselves and this impotent system."
He stressed that while every athlete wants to win, sport is inherently brutal. "Only one can be No.1. That doesn't make the others losers. The expectations we place on athletes are unrealistic. We must begin celebrating the effort, not just the outcome."
Reflecting on his coaching philosophy, Gopichand said he tailors his approach to the needs of his students. "What works for them is what I'll follow. Many coaches never switch out of player mode — but coaching is about adapting." He also reminded young athletes not to be too harsh on themselves. "Don't cry after every loss. Learn from it. It's a sport. The nature of competition is tough."
Recalling the early struggles, he said, "My coach Hamid Hussain never taught me technique — he just taught me to love the sport. That's what mattered. We weren't poor, but we didn't have a rupee to spare. Still, I never saw it as a sacrifice — it was always love for the game."

'Way Shubman Held Everyone Together...': Karun Nair Lauds Test Captain Gill

Last Updated: Karun Nair has lauded Shubman Gill's captaincy in the 2-2 Test series against England. Star India batter Karun Nair has said that the way Test skipper Shubman Gill held everyone together and the encouragement he gave was great to see in the five-Test series against England, which India drew 2-2 in a high-voltage, highly-contested tie which oscillated from one side to the other. Gill topped the series with 754 runs at a brilliant average exceeding 75, featuring a double hundred and three centuries. Gill was on Thursday named skipper of the North Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, starting August 28, thus marking an official start to his captaincy in Indian cricket. 'The way Shubman held everyone together and the encouragement he gave was great to see. He was crystal clear with his communication from the beginning. To achieve what he did as a batter, while also leading the team…as a leader, he exemplified the spirit of Gauti bhai," Nair said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo. The star Indian cricketer endured a disappointing series, scoring 205 runs across eight innings with just one half-century at the Oval. Despite getting good starts, Nair struggled to convert them into big scores. 'I was disappointed at not being able to convert the start at The Oval into a century. But looking back, it was quite important to grind my way on that first day with the team in a tricky position," Nair said. 'It was an up-and-down series in that sense and I did reflect a lot. But it's also important to let go of what has happened and look forward to what I need to do in the next few months," Nair said. The star India batter doesn't feature in the South Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Srikkanth names the right replacement for MS Dhoni in CSK

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 9 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth said on Saturday that wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, currently representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is the 'right replacement" for legendary multi-time IPL winning skipper MS Dhoni in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) set-up, pointing out to his popularity in the state. Srikkanth was speaking on his Youtube Channel. His comments amid media reports that Samson, who leads the Pink franchise, could switch to CSK and has asked RR to release him ahead of the next IPL season, reportedly due to a drift between him and head coach Rahul Dravid. Speaking about Samson on his channel, Srikkanth said, 'To tell you the truth, Sanju is a brilliant player and he is very popular in Chennai. He has got a good brand image in Chennai. As I said, I will be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side."'He is the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with," he added. Dhoni, aged 44, is in the twilight of his IPL career, having retired from international cricket back in 2019. During the last season, he led the side after Gaikwad was ruled out due to injury. His captaincy could not change the team's fortunes as they finished at the bottom with just four wins. Batting as a finisher, Dhoni scored 196 runs in 13 innings, with an average of 24.50, a strike rate of over 135, with a best score of 30*. Continuing, Srikkanth said that as per reports, there seems to be rift between Samson and Dravid. 'But I am not fully aware. Look at it from a franchise point of view. They have paid him a certain amount and retained him. They have formed the team around him. All of a sudden, if you release him, what happens to the team balance? They have not won the IPL since 2008. They have reached the final after that (in 2022). I do not think I would let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He has been paid Rs 18 crore," Srikkanth concluded. Having played for Delhi Capitals from 2016-17, Samson has been a part of the RR set-up for the majority of his IPL career since his debut in 2013, scoring 4,027 runs at an average of 31.71, with two centuries and 23 fifties. Last year, in an injury-ridden season, he scored 285 runs in nine matches at an average of 35.63, with a fifty to his name. Riyan captained in his absence. (ANI)
