Tesla hires former Cruise executive as AI director

Time of India28-06-2025
Tesla has hired former Cruise executive,
Henry Kuang
, as the automaker's AI director, according to a report by news website Electrek on Thursday, as the company looks to expand
robotaxi operations
in the United States.
Kuang was the head of autonomy at General Motors' self-driving unit, Cruise, till last year, according to his LinkedIn profile.
His appointment comes at a time when Tesla has seen a series of high-profile departures in the past year, including the resignation of two senior executives on Thursday.
Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, while Kuang could not be reached.
While Kuang's role at Tesla is not clear, Ashok Elluswamy, who was the first engineer hired for Tesla's Autopilot team in 2014, has largely been leading the company's self-driving initiatives.
Omead Afshar, a top Tesla executive and longtime Elon Musk confidant, left the electric-vehicle maker along with North America HR Director Jenna Ferrua, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.
Tesla is going through sweeping company-wide restructuring, during which the electric vehicle maker has laid off thousands of employees and shifted its strategic focus toward
AI-driven self-driving technology
and robotics.
The company rolled out a small batch of its
Model Y robotaxis
in Austin, Texas on June 22, ferrying paying passengers in a small area of the city and CEO Elon Musk has pledged to expand into several U.S. cities by next year.
Musk said last month Tesla will deliver its first car autonomously from factory to customer in June.
General Motors said earlier this year that it had completed the full acquisition of its Cruise business to focus on developing the autonomous technology for personal vehicles, not robotaxis.

'Roof Over My Head...': Elon Musk's Ex Ashley Says She Has No Money, Launches Podcast

Ashley St. Clair, mother of Elon Musk's son Romulus, said that she is financial difficulties amid a custody dispute with the Tesla CEO. Ashley St. Clair, the mother of Elon Musk's one-year-old son Romulus, said she is facing severe financial difficulties as she launched a new podcast. The 26-year-old conservative commentator is currently locked in a custody dispute with the Tesla boss. Despite reports that Elon Musk has provided substantial financial support, Ashley St. Clair said she is struggling to stay afloat. 'Well, after a year of unplanned career suicide, many questionable life choices and a gap in my LinkedIn profile that cannot be legally explained, I've decided to start a podcast," she said in the opening episode of her podcast 'Bad Advice'. She joked about her circumstances, saying, 'Also, I'm getting evicted, and Polymarket offered me $10,000 to do an ad read. So with that, the roof over my head has been brought to you by Polymarket." Elon Musk vs Ashley Over Child Support The influencer earlier alleged that Elon Musk initially offered her $15 million upfront and $100,000 a month in child support if she kept their son's birth secret. She rejected the proposal, saying it did not provide adequate protections for the child and instead filed for custody and financial support through the courts. Her legal team claims Elon Musk subsequently cut monthly payments- from $100,000 to $40,000 and later to $20,000. Elon Musk has disputed that version of events, saying earlier this year, 'I don't know if the child is mine or not. Despite not knowing for sure, I have given Ashley $2.5M and am sending her $500k/year." A paternity test later confirmed with 99.9999% probability that Elon Musk is Romulus's father, according to a report seen by the Wall Street Journal. Romulus, Elon Musk's 13th child, was born in September 2024. Ashley St. Clair went public with the news on Valentine's Day this year, saying she had done so after becoming aware the tabloid press intended to reveal it. Elon Musk and Ashley first connected in May 2023, when the tech boss responded to one of her memes with a laughing emoji. They met later that month during an interview between Elon Musk and Seth Dillon, chief executive of satire site Babylon Bee, where Ashley St. Clair worked. Tesla starts taking orders for its new Model Y L in China from around $47,200

Tesla Inc started accepting orders for its new Model Y L in China on Tuesday with a starting price of 339,000 yuan ($47,184), its website showed, as it refreshes its line-up in the world's largest auto market to battle growing competition. Tesla first launched the Model Y in 2020 and it became the world's best-selling car in 2023. The ageing model lost some sales momentum last year, hurt by competition from local rivals in China such as Xiaomi's YU7, while in other markets demand for electric vehicles has weakened. In January, Tesla launched a new version of the Model Y with a redesigned exterior and upgraded features in Asia Pacific markets and in July registered plans with Chinese authorities for the new Model Y L. A longer-range, rear-wheel drive Model 3 is also coming to the Chinese market, according to filing information published on China's industry ministry website in July. Elon Musk's Tesla registered an 8.4 per cent fall in July sales of its China-made electric vehicles.
