New restaurants and cafes opening in Glasgow this Spring

Here are seven new openings to look out for in the coming weeks:
Cuvée
1 Lynedoch Street
This new Champagne, wine, and cheese bar will open upstairs at a 'grand townhouse' in Woodlands on Saturday, April 26.
The team will make the most of the space's period features to enhance what would have been a smart city drawing room, now a 30-cover lounge, with seats for 16 at the bar.
Located next door to Rascal cocktail bar, Cuvée will serve a wide selection of Champagnes, Cremant, wines and a 'bijou' cocktail list complemented by a small plates and sharing cheese and meats menu.
Gemma Allan, regional sales manager for Möet Hennessy, LVMH, said: 'We are thrilled to partner with Cuvée in Glasgow to bring a new and exciting Champagne experience to the city.
"Our collaboration allows us to showcase an extensive selection of our most prestigious Champagnes by the glass, providing an opportunity for guests to savour and appreciate the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that Moët Hennessy is renowned for.
"Cuvée is set to become a premier destination for Champagne lovers and those seeking a sophisticated and memorable evening.'
Corner shop
45 Old Dumbarton Road
New neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar Cornershop promises a menu of small plates including tempura hand-dived scallops, jamon iberico, whole Dover sole with chicken and clam sauce and grilled chilli squid.
Wines will be sourced in partnership with local and independent merchants and importers, and, wherever possible, the team will showcase producers who use organic practices.
You might recognise the unit as the former home of Grain and Grind coffee shop, but following extensive refurbishment work, we're eager to see how the new owners have reimagined the space.
Zennor
287 Langside Road
Fans of this stylish East End coffee shop will likely have been keeping a close eye on updates concerning a second Zennor location in Glasgow.
Alongside a sneak peek at the new interiors shared on social media earlier this month, owners Sophie and Kieran said: "After getting the keys in December, the past four months have been incredibly gruelling.
"Every waking moment has been spent building this new space- it truly has been a labour of love.
"From furniture design to fabrication, we have done it all and are so proud of what we've achieved- it's definitely been a journey, but we can't wait to show you what we've created."
Taking over the space from the hugely popular TwoEightSeven bakery in Govanhill, the team welcomed their first Southside customers last week with a menu of freshly baked pastries and speciality coffee.
Egg Daddy
173 Centre Street
Hailed as 'Scotland's first egg bar', Egg Daddy opened in the city's Kinning Park area at the beginning of this month.
The concept centres on huge egg sandwiches prepared with 'eggstra love' and a range of additional fillings like veggie-friendly grilled mushrooms, chives and cheddar cheese or the 'Smash Daddy' with an Aberdeen Angus beef patty and sriracha mayo.
The Real Wan
10 Clincart Road
Already beloved by Glasgow foodies, The Real Wan is back and better than ever following a move from their original matchbox-sized unit in Cathcart to a much larger space in Mount Florida.

Owner, Lea Wu, said: "We are now in a better place, but my original motivation and idea for The Real Wan will never change.
"The food quality won't change. The appreciation for you guys won't change. The bond between the taste of The Real Wan and all you foodies won't change."
On that note, expect South-West Chinese dishes of braised beef mooli and tangy pickled Chinese greens in traditional broth, fried aubergine in fermented chilli paste and chicken thighs slow-cooked with Guiyang home-style chilli.

Lychee Oriental
67 Kilmarnock Road
Big changes are underway at the Kilmarnock Road unit, which has until recently been the location of Salt and Chilli from Glasgow chef Jimmy Lee.
According to new signage and a pop-up message on the team's website, TikTok-famous Lee will soon be replacing Salt and Chilli with a sister outlet to his city centre restaurant, Lychee Oriental.

Should they introduce a menu similar to that of the original Lychee, Southsiders can look forward to dishes like Hong Kong sweet and sour chicken, claypot duck with pickled ginger and spring onion and Thai style crispy seabass.
Café XO
Inn Deep, 445 Great Western Road
Café XO, led by Andrew Manson, celebrates "all things umami" with a menu featuring the likes of short rib of beef rendang, watermelon salad and black sesame or cured sea trout with buttermilk, dashi, pickled fennel and togarashi.
"Café XO isn't just about serving food—it's about sharing a movement," the chef explained.
"It's about creating an experience where passion, skill, and enjoyment take centre stage.
"I want to bring back the joy of cooking, serving, and truly connecting with guests, without the constant pressure of hitting targets and squeezing every penny out of the process.
"When the focus is on delivering a memorable experience for everyone involved, everything else will follow naturally.'
The team has recently announced plans to join the Clydeside Containers line-up later this spring, but for now, you can also catch them at Inn Deep bar in the city's West End.

People smugglers are moving migrants from France to the UK by hiding them inside cars on ferries - before the stowaways jump into lorries on the vehicle deck mid-way through the voyage. A former Border Force chief informed about the newly revealed smuggling method - illustrated today in a MailOnline graphic - described it as 'really useful intelligence' and said it may require improvements to security on ferries and at Dover. Lorries were the most common route used by stowaways before tighter security around ports and the Channel Tunnel prompted smugglers to change their tactics to favour small boat crossings. These have hit record levels this year, with 1,200 arriving by boat on Saturday alone. Migrants stowing away in lorries typically board them in northern France before remaining hidden until the vehicle has entered Britain. But the updated method, apparently pioneered by Albanian gangs, was described by one convicted people smuggler as 'easy' and 'low risk' because it only requires the smuggler to sneak their client onto the ferry inside the boot of their car. Once the smuggler has got to the ferry's car deck, the migrant jumps out of the vehicle and gets into a lorry, typically by slicing through the tarpaulin. The smuggler then passes the lorry's number plate to an associate in the UK who trails the vehicle after it leaves Dover and collects the migrant once it stops. The lorry driver has no idea of their involvement, but risks being fined up to £10,000 if the stowaway is found in their vehicle by officials. 'Nick', a former British Army soldier who previously worked as a people smuggler for an Albanian gang, revealed the method on a new BBC podcast. Cars go through the UK border at Calais and can be examined by Border Force officers, but given the amount of traffic it is impossible for them to check everyone, Tony Smith, who led the agency from 2012 to 2013, told Radio 4's The Smuggler. 'In terms of manual checks, can you imagine how that would work during busy summer ferry crossings? They'd be an outcry from the tourism industry,' he said. Meanwhile, lorries are checked for stowaways in Calais and then pre-cleared for entry to the UK, Mr Smith explained. This means the vehicles are unlikely to be reexamined at Dover. Asked what Border Force could do about migrants getting into lorries mid-way through the Channel crossing itself, he replied: 'Nothing. There's nothing that Border Force could do about that because you've already been cleared for entry to the UK by the Border Force officer who examined your vehicle in France. 'What happens onboard the ferry when you're on the car deck is a matter for the ferry company, in terms of the security of the vehicles. 'You are going to disrupt trade significantly if you say you are also going to stop and search everybody at Dover. 'There are opportunities for us to divert lorries into sheds for secondary inspection if there is specific intelligence that the particular vehicle might be carrying prohibited or restricted goods for customs purposes. 'But the assumption of those officers in Dover, in terms of people smuggling, will be that the lorries have already been searched for people and there wouldn't have been somebody inserting people into a lorry during passage. 'So I think this is really useful intelligence of another form of mischief that might require us to look again at security at passage and at Dover.' Nick, who did not provide his real name, said he was paid £3,500 by Albanian gangsters for every migrant he managed to bring in. The Englishman was convicted and sent to prison in 2019, but said he wanted to speak out about the issue because he was jailed for a crime that was still possible to commit. He claimed to be aware of people who had used the same routes and methods as him within the past year. His testimony comes a month after a watchdog report warned officials were missing opportunities to intercept migrants reaching the UK on lorries. The HM Inspectorate of Constabulary claimed the Government and NCA's focus on Channel crossings could 'lead to missed opportunities in other areas of immigration crime, such as clandestine vehicle entries'. Around 5,000 'clandestine entrants' were found last year at UK border controls in Calais, Coquelles and Dunkirk, according to a report by the immigration and borders watchdog. Inevitably, others would have managed to evade checks. The Home Office's Clandestine Entrant Civil Penalty Scheme handed out 1,276 fines worth nearly £10million in 2023/24 to drivers who were found with migrants hiding in their vehicles, either in northern France or after crossing into the UK. Despite the continuing risk of smuggling by lorry, the overwhelming focus remains on small boat crossing, with stubbornly high arrival numbers proving an embarrassment for the Government. Saturday witnessed 1,195 small boat arrivals - the fifth highest daily tally on record. It was also the first day to break the 1,000 barrier for more than two and a half years. Sir Keir Starmer's pledge to 'smash the gangs' behind the crossings has prompted derision from critics, who point out the need for a deterrent to prevent migrants from wanting to make the crossing in the first place.

Dover 24/7: Britain's Busiest Port review – you won't believe the fact about the bananas!

This documentary is a meat-and-two-veg slice of British television, comfortable and familiar and sturdy. It's the sort of TV that doesn't ask much of you, only that you raise an eyebrow, nod along, and say yes, that is an interesting fact about bananas, I'd never thought about that before. The statistics are plentiful and free-flowing, so much so that without them being breathlessly relayed every few seconds, you suspect it could have been a 20-minute show. Even so: 3m bananas! Which must be stored at exactly 14C (57F), so they don't ripen too soon! Dover is the UK's biggest ferry port. According to the film-makers, 10 million passengers pass through it every year, as does a third of Britain's trade with the EU. During the summer, upwards of 10,000 freight vehicles and 15,000 passenger vehicles make use of it daily. It's a busy place, with multiple purposes, and many different teams, attempting to form a gigantic sort of interlocking puzzle. The show borrows from various sections of the jobs-based reality-documentary toolbox. As a result, it feels like a bit of a hybrid of many other programmes. It's Border Force meets Traffic Cops meets Inside the Factory, with a tiny splash of late-90s series Airline, though sadly it is nowhere near as camp as that minor classic. It begins with the Border Force element. The Port of Dover has its own police force, of 'nearly 40' officers, in charge of the safety and security of passengers. We see two of them patrolling the white cliffs, to check, excitingly, whether anyone is carrying out 'hostile reconnaissance'. They might be a famous tourist attraction and a renowned beauty spot, but the cliffs also offer a view of the entire port, perfect for bad actors to do some spying. It does make you wonder if making television viewers aware of this is in the best interests of national security. But there are no spies today, merely some evidence of alcohol consumption. They stop a man driving to Europe from Birmingham, because he's got eight people in the car, three of whom are children not wearing seatbelts, and when they check his documents, that turns out to be the least of his worries. Then the radios crackle with a message that a freight driver is claiming to have a gun and is 'irate', and everyone runs. It looks like the camera crew has struck gold. This is properly exciting. But it turns out to be a misunderstanding involving flashcards, and the driver gets escorted away for the day, with a slap on the wrist. Minor dramas bubble up to the surface, then pop, and dissipate gently. On a national security level, it's reassuring that there is so little threat here, even though it does make for steady television. Michelle, the duty operations officer, has got a busy day ahead: she needs to figure out how to get a convoy of six coaches on board the ferry to Dunkirk, without blocking the lanes. She manages to pull it off without a hitch. We get to meet the ferry's head chef, Paolo, who caters to the coach passengers, and has a run on fish and chips. I am no logistics mastermind, but if you asked me what six coach-loads of passengers of a certain age, travelling to Dunkirk, might want to eat, fish and chips wouldn't be an outside bet. I am also surprised to learn that ferries have head chefs, after recently travelling on a ferry myself – not this company, I should add – and eating what can only be described as the most beige meal that has ever been plated up, and paying £25 for the privilege. We learn that to compensate the residents of Dover for the fact that 3.8m vehicles pass through the town every year, and traffic can occasionally get a bit much, the Port of Dover throws an annual regatta for locals, to give back to the community. Unfortunately, on the day, it is very windy, but it goes quite well. That's all there is to it. Running a busy port sounds like a difficult task, but everyone here seems pretty competent, and on the basis of this documentary, it all looks as if it's going well. Again, reassuring, in terms of that safe pair of hands, if not the most lively television you'll ever see. Apart from the bananas, that is. They arrive on a boat so big that it needs tiny boats to help it dock. It requires remote-controlled cranes to offload the endless crates of bananas. One of the cranes gets stuck. The weather starts to turn. The cargo ship must leave quickly, before the tide goes out. The music is dramatic, the stakes are high. I'll leave you to guess how it all turns out.
