Putin and Trump to speak by phone in their sixth conversation this year

MOSCOW: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin said they will speak by phone Thursday, their sixth publicly disclosed chat since Trump returned to the White House this year. Trump said in a social media post the call will take place at 10 a.m. EDT. Neither leader offered any immediate details on the topic. Their previous publicly known call came June 14, a day after Israel attacked Iran. Their resumed contacts appeared to reflect both leaders' interest in mending U.S.-Russian ties that have plummeted to their lowest point since the Cold War amid the 3-year-old conflict in Ukraine. Thursday's call follows the Pentagon's confirmation that it's pausing shipment of some weapons to Ukraine as it goes about a global review of U.S. military stockpiles. The weapons being held up for Ukraine include air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery and other equipment. The details on the weapons in some of the paused deliveries were confirmed by a U.S. official and former national security official familiar with the matter. They both requested anonymity to discuss what is being held up as the Pentagon has yet to provide details. On Tuesday, Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held their first direct telephone call in almost three years.

Russian Deputy Navy Chief Killed In Kursk Region

A high-ranking Russian general serving as deputy commander of the navy was killed during "combat operations" in the Kursk region, officials said Thursday, amid ongoing fighting in the area. Mikhail Gudkov, 42, had served in the military since 2000 and was made "Hero of the Russian Federation" by President Vladimir Putin in 2023 -- the Kremlin's highest honour. He is one of the most senior Russian military officers to have been killed since Moscow launched its offensive on Ukraine in February 2022. "During combat operations in one of the border areas of the Kursk region on July 2, 2025... Major General Mikhail Evgenievich Gudkov was killed," Russia's state RIA news agency quoted the defence ministry as saying. Oleg Kozhemyako, head of the Primorye region in Russia's Far East, said Gudkov "was killed carrying out his duty as an officer". Kozhemyako said he had spoken to Gudkov "a lot" over the years, praising him as a "strong-spirited fighter". He said Gudkov was a former commander of the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet based in the Russian Far East. The governor said that, even after becoming deputy commander of the Russian navy, Gudkov "did not stop going out in person to the positions of our marines". Ukrainian forces captured large parts of Kursk in a surprise offensive last year -- a response to Russia's full-scale campaign against their country which began in 2022. Russia in April said it had fully recaptured the territory but clashes in the border region have continued.

Putin schedules call with Donald Trump while US scrambles to clarify military aid to Ukraine before Zelenskyy talks begin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed he will speak with the U.S. President Donald Trump in a scheduled phone call on Thursday, July 4. The announcement was made during Putin's visit to an exhibition promoting Russian brands, where he mentioned that he would encourage Trump to help promote Russian goods in the U.S. market. The call was later confirmed by Trump through a post on his Truth Social account, specifying that it would take place at 10 a.m. Washington time. However, neither the Kremlin nor Trump's team disclosed what topics would be discussed during the call. Last call covered Israel-Iran conflict and Ukraine negotiations The two leaders last spoke on June 14. That call focused on the conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as peace negotiations surrounding the war in Ukraine. The upcoming conversation is expected to build on those discussions, though no formal agenda has been shared. Putin's confirmed call with Trump comes just days after he held a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron—the first between the two since 2022. Macron urged Putin to consider a ceasefire in Ukraine "as soon as possible." Trump, Zelenskyy call also being planned Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump are expected to hold a phone call on Friday, July 5, according to reports by the Financial Times. Politico also reported ongoing efforts between Ukraine and the United States to coordinate this call amid concerns about arms supply disruptions. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce addressed these concerns, stating that the recent halt in arms shipments was an isolated case and not a complete suspension. Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukraine is in discussions with U.S. officials to clarify the status of military aid deliveries. Ongoing ceasefire negotiations and background This sequence of calls ties back to an earlier round of diplomatic communication in May. On May 17, Trump had announced plans to speak with Putin on May 19, followed by calls with Zelenskyy and NATO allies. The May 19 call between Trump and Putin reportedly lasted over two hours. According to Putin, Russia was then willing to work on a memorandum with Ukraine that could include a limited-time ceasefire. He also mentioned that contact between the negotiation teams from previous Istanbul talks had resumed. Although no official topics have been confirmed, the pattern of recent diplomatic activity suggests continued efforts to address the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and negotiation.
