Putin schedules call with Donald Trump while US scrambles to clarify military aid to Ukraine before Zelenskyy talks begin
The call was later confirmed by Trump through a post on his Truth Social account, specifying that it would take place at 10 a.m. Washington time. However, neither the Kremlin nor Trump's team disclosed what topics would be discussed during the call.
Last call covered Israel-Iran conflict and Ukraine negotiations
The two leaders last spoke on June 14. That call focused on the conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as peace negotiations surrounding the war in Ukraine. The upcoming conversation is expected to build on those discussions, though no formal agenda has been shared.
Putin's confirmed call with Trump comes just days after he held a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron—the first between the two since 2022. Macron urged Putin to consider a ceasefire in Ukraine "as soon as possible."
Trump, Zelenskyy call also being planned
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump are expected to hold a phone call on Friday, July 5, according to reports by the Financial Times. Politico also reported ongoing efforts between Ukraine and the United States to coordinate this call amid concerns about arms supply disruptions.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce addressed these concerns, stating that the recent halt in arms shipments was an isolated case and not a complete suspension. Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukraine is in discussions with U.S. officials to clarify the status of military aid deliveries.
Ongoing ceasefire negotiations and background
This sequence of calls ties back to an earlier round of diplomatic communication in May. On May 17, Trump had announced plans to speak with Putin on May 19, followed by calls with Zelenskyy and NATO allies.
The May 19 call between Trump and Putin reportedly lasted over two hours. According to Putin, Russia was then willing to work on a memorandum with Ukraine that could include a limited-time ceasefire. He also mentioned that contact between the negotiation teams from previous Istanbul talks had resumed.
Although no official topics have been confirmed, the pattern of recent diplomatic activity suggests continued efforts to address the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and negotiation.

After Donald Trump complained that his portrait in the Colorado State Capitol was "distorted," lawmakers replaced it with a new one. The new portrait, painted by Vanessa Horabuena and donated by the White House, is eliciting laughs and memes online, with some claiming it is just as bizarre as the previous one. Who painted the older version? Legislators in Colorado learned of this earlier this year when Trump complained that a portrait of himself on display in the state capitol for almost six years was "purposefully distorted."
