English Premier League has become a soccer juggernaut. Can it remain on top?

Alan Shearer was in his prime and in the starting lineup for Blackburn when the English Premier League kicked off its first season 33 summers ago.
Shearer scored two goals that day in a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace. But he had no idea that season would give birth to the most dominant force in the history of club soccer — and perhaps the most dominant force in the history of international sports.
'There's no way anyone could have predicted back in 1992 that it was going to be this incredible, huge, gigantic force that it's become,' said Shearer, who would go on to become the leading scorer in EPL history, of the Premier League. 'It is sort of chalk and cheese in terms of where it was then to where it is now.'
That's an English way of saying the league, which kicked off a new season Friday, has progressed.
International soccer is a sport ruled by money, and the Premier League became the best league in the world because it's also the richest. Six of the 10 wealthiest teams in the world play in the EPL, where the average franchise value is $1.5 billion, according to Sportico. And the 20 teams combined to earn more than $8.5 billion in commercial revenue in 2023-24, according to Deloitte.
That's allowed the EPL to outbid others for the top talent, resulting in deeper rosters and a level of play no other league can match.
Other leagues may have one or two better teams — France's Paris Saint-Germain, for example, is the reigning European champion and Spain's Real Madrid has won 15 continental titles, more than twice what any English club has won — but top to bottom, no league is as competitive as the EPL. That's why its games are broadcast in 189 countries to a potential audience of 4.7 billion people, part of an international and domestic broadcast package valued at $5.1 billion a season, according to CNBC.
'It is where it is because of the interest and because of how many people want to watch it,' said Shearer, now a soccer pundit for the BBC. 'We've got, without a doubt, a lot of the best players in the world. We've got the best atmosphere in the world. The finances are there.
'Basically everyone wants to be a part of it. And whilst that is the case, it's only going to get bigger.'
It certainly didn't start that way. The Premier League formed when English soccer was emerging from a low point that threatened to sink it. In the mid 1980s, hooliganism was rife, English teams were banned from European competition for five years following a deadly clash between Liverpool and Juventus supporters in Belgium, and the Football League First Division, the country's top level since 1888, lagged well behind Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga in attendance and revenue. As a result, the best English stars, not to mention international talent, played elsewhere.
By 1990 the situation had gotten so bad, England's top clubs — Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton, known collectively as the 'Big Five' — had begun discussions to form a breakaway league that would have commercial independence, allowing it to increase revenue by negotiating its own broadcast and sponsorship deals.
Two years later, the Premier League debuted.
The revenue growth that EPL has enjoyed in the three decades since is well beyond the wildest dreams of the league's founding fathers. And that's turned around an exodus of top players out of England; now nearly three-quarters of Premier League players are foreign-born, among them Egypt's Mo Salah, Norway's Erling Haaland and Sweden's Alexander Isak.
But what has really made the Premier League great is its relative balance. Although just seven teams have won a title in the league's 32 seasons, that qualifies as parity in Europe, where Bayern Munich has won 12 of the last 13 German championships, PSG has won 11 of the last 13 French crowns and just one team not named Real Madrid or Barcelona has won the Spanish league in the last 21 years.
In the Premier League, on any given weekend every game is in doubt. That competitiveness is why three EPL teams have won the UEFA Champions League since 2019 and in two of those three seasons, the European champion didn't win the Premier League title. This summer Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup, making it arguably the best team on the planet, two months after finishing fourth in the Premier League table.
'One week the team at the bottom can beat the team at the top and that's not a fluke,' said Shearer, who played for a Newcastle team that finished second in the EPL in consecutive seasons, then fell to 13th in each of the next two. 'I don't see that jeopardy in other leagues at all. That's why the Premier League works and why the Premier League is the most watched.'
The challenge now for the Premier League is staying on top. When the EPL came into being, Serie A and La Liga were widely considered the best leagues in the world, winning a combined six Champions League titles between 1990 and 2000. But financial issues, tactical stagnation and a lack of investment in infrastructure combined to sink Italian soccer while La Liga became so top-heavy, with superclubs Barcelona and Real Madrid choking off all competition, that it became a league of two Goliaths and 18 Davids.
Shearer said there are lessons to be learned from those experiences.
'Every huge business has to evolve and keep going forward and keep improving,' he said. 'The Premier League is no different. Since that very first day when I ran out for Blackburn against Crystal Palace to what it is now, there's been improvement. Whilst the interest is there, whilst the finance keeps coming in, whilst we all want to watch, it is getting bigger and better.
'But yeah, you have to keep an eye on your competitors.'

He reports that the Granata will sign Asllani on a paid loan with a purchase option. The last few days have seen things finally get in motion for Kristjan Asllani to leave Inter. The Nerazzurri had made it abundantly clear to the 23-year-old that he would not be a part of the project. However, both Inter and Asllani have been waiting for suitable offers. However, the Rossoblu struggled to agree personal terms with the player. Therefore, this gave Torino an opening to make a move of their own. And Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Granata are now on the verge of an agreement with Inter. Having already convinced Asllani, Torino just have to put the finishing touches on a deal with Inter. Di Marzio anticipates they will pay a €1.5 million loan fee, and then have a €12 million purchase option next summer.

The Brazilian had picked up a slight muscle problem last week. That issue caused Augusto to miss Inter's final friendly match of preseason against Olympiacos. However, the Corriere dello Sport report, Augusto will be available on Monday. Meanwhile, midfielder Davide Frattesi has been recovering from abdominal surgery. A round-up of the latest goings on in the transfer window, as La Liga sides look to strengthen ahead of the new season. Athletic Club Central midfielder Peio Canales has joined Racing Santander on loan for the season, while winger Adu Ares has joined Racing Santander on a free transfer. Another midfield option Unai Vencedor is considering his options, with interest from Sporting Gijon, Malaga and Real Zaragoza, say Diario AS. Yet none have made a firm move, and Ernesto Valverde does not have him in his plans. Atletico Madrid B team defender Martin Pascual has left to join Mirandes on a free. Meanwhile this week it was announced that Cristian Romero will renew his deal with Tottenham Hotspur, seemingly ending Atletico's hopes of signing him this summer or next. Barcelona Talented winger Jan Virgili looked set to leave the club this summer, following interest from RCD Mallorca and Almeria. Barcelona have told him to bring in an offer of €4m, say MD, and that is yet to arrive, increasing his chances of staying. They do mention that it did not go down well with the club that he was reluctant to play in the fourth tier with Barca Atletic. Image via FC Barfcelona Celta Vigo After his acrimonious split from the club two years ago, Diario AS say that Denis Suarez could return from Villarreal. They are in talks to sign him on a free, with the Yellow Submarine keen to clear space in their salary limit. Deportivo La Coruna It very much looked like Yeremay Hernandez would be staying at Deportivo this summer, after turning down a move to Como and signing a new deal. However A Bola (via Diario AS), explain that Sporting CP are offering €25m plus €5m in variables for the talented winger. Elche Elche have confirmed the signing of holding midfielder Federico Redondo from Inter Miami, for a fee of €2.15m in exchange for 50% of his rights. Elche have loaned in forward Rafa Mir from Sevilla for the season, and signed ex-Real Sociedad forward Andre Silva from RB Leipzig for €1m on a one-year deal. Another big deal is the renewal of talented midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza, who has signed until 2028, despite interest from Real Madrid. Leaving the club is Matia Barzic, who has joined Cultural Leonesa on loan for the year. Getafe Getafe remain in salary limit hell, and looking for sales in order to help register players. Diario AS say that Borja Mayoral could help them do so, but he has turned down an offer from Rayados de Monterrey as he prefers to remain in Europe. Los Azulones feel Villarreal could come back in for him. The other player in the spotlight is Chrisantus Uche. Ben Jacobs reports that Wolves are interested in him, but are yet to make a move. The Nigerian powerhouse has a €25m release clause. Girona Central defender Antal Yaakobishvili has joined Andorra on loan for the season. Midfielder Ibrahima Kebe has left to join Penafiel on a free. After confirming the sale of Miguel Gutierrez to Napoli, Girona are set to bring in Alex Moreno from Aston Villa. Levante Midfielder Oscar Clemente has been released after two years at the club, having spent last season on loan at Cartagena. In his place is Iker Losada, who has joined on loan from Real Betis for the season. Osasuna According to Matteo Moretto, Osasuna are attempting to sign Jeremiah St. Juste from Sporting CP. Rayo Vallecano Rayo Vallecano have secured the signing of Fran Perez from Valencia for €1m. The 22-year-old winger signs a four-year deal in Vallecas. After it appeared Nobel Mendy was on his way to Rangers, the Betis defender has arrived on loan at Vallecas too with an option to buy. El Chiringuito also report that Rayo have made contact with Real Sociedad winger Sheraldo Becker, who is not wanted at the Reale Arena. RCD Mallorca Roma defender Marash Kumbulla has joined Mallorca on loan after a successful spell at Espanyol last season. The Albanian defender helps to fill the gaps left by Siebe van der Heyden and Jose Copete. Mallorca have also confirmed the sale of Dominik Greif to Olympique Lyon for €4m, after Leo Roman signed a new deal, and the latter will be their new number one. They are also facing interest from Saudi Arabian giants Al Ahli in defensive midfielder Samu Costa. Cope Baleares (via Sport) say that they intend to make a €22m offer for the Portuguese destroyer. Real Betis Real Betis are still looking to strengthen their left-back spot with Ricardo Rodriguez due to depart before the end of the window. Cadena SER say that they are in negotiations with Real Sociedad for Javi Lopez, and a deal could be done for around €6m. La Real want the money they spent on him back, after signing him from Alaves for €6.8m. Real Oviedo Young midfielder Yayo Gonzalez has joined Cultural Leonesa on loan for the season, and Alex Cardero has gone to Mirandes on loan, but the headlines are the arrivals of Eric Bailly and Josip Brekalo. The ex-Manchester United defender left Villarreal this summer, and has penned a two-year deal in Asturias. The Croatian international will sign for Oviedo on a free from Fiorentina, explains Matteo Moretto, having spent last season on loan at Kasimpasa. In addition, Aston Villa midfielder and Belgian international Leander Dendoncker has joined the club on a free. The 30-year-old is also on a two-year deal. Real Sociedad Forward Carlos Fernandez has joined Mirandes on loan for the season, for what is the final year of his contract. With Girona interested in forward Umar Sadiq, NdG (via Sport) explain that La Real may move for midfielder Yangel Herrera in a player plus cash deal. Valencia Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski has asked to leave the club, say Diario AS. The Macedonian international looks set to be number two again after Julen Agirrezabala was signed on loan, and Lille, Fenerbahce, Celta Vigo and Levante have enquired about him. Los Che will not allow him to leave on a free though, with one year remaining on his deal. Villarreal After scoring in the season opener, Swansea have made a loan offer for forward Etta Eyong. He is keen to remain at the club, feeling he can battle for his spot. El Chiringuito say Rangers, Leeds United and Levante are all interested in him too. However there is competition arriving too. Villarreal are on the verge of signing Tani Oluwaseyi from Minnesota United, say Marca. This of course comes after reaching an agreement with Chelsea for Renato Veiga.
