Canon goes all in on vlogging with the PowerShot V1 compact and R50 V mirrorless cameras
Canon is expanding its vlogging lineup in a big way with two new models, the R50 V mirrorless and PowerShot V1 compact, both designed to take on cameras in Sony's vlogging lineup. The PowerShot V1 has an interesting new 1.4-inch sensor that's considerably larger than the ones on most compact cameras. The R50 V, meanwhile, matches features from Sony's ZV-E10 II but at a considerably lower price.
The PowerShot V1 was already announced and released in Japan, but it's now set to come to North America. It effectively competes with Sony's ZV-1 II 1-inch sensor compact but has a much larger 1.4-inch 22.3MP sensor that's roughly the same size as Micro Four Thirds, but with a horizontal aspect ratio better suited for video. That larger size, along with the 17-52mm (3.1x zoom) f/2.8-4.5 lens, should make it superior to its rival in low light while also offering shallower depth of field.
I've only had the PowerShot V1 for a day, but it's heavy for a compact camera at 426 grams (15 ounces) and fairly thick. There aren't many manual controls other than the top mode dial, a rear setting dial for burst, exposure compensation and other functions, a lens dial for aperture, a camera/video switch and a zoom dial, along with several buttons. It has a 3-inch, one-million-dot fully articulating rear display but no electronic viewfinder, just like the ZV-1 II.
It can shoot 4K 30 fps supersampled video using the full sensor width, 4K 60p video with a 1.4 times crop or 1080p at 240 fps. Also supported is Canon C-Log3 with 10-bit 4:2:2 capture to improve dynamic range and allow for easier grading. Optical along with digital enhanced stabilization are available and to allay overheating it comes with a built-in cooling fan that allows unlimited shooting times at all resolutions.
Like the ZV-1 II, the PowerShot V1 supports several shooting modes aimed at creators. Those include a "close-up demo mode" that's equivalent to Sony's "product showcase," allowing the camera to quickly focus on an object you hold in front of the camera. Another is "smooth skin mode" for beauty-style shooting, plus "movie IS mode" for vloggers that stabilizes any jolting movements like walking.
The PowerShot V1 uses Canon's Dual Pixel II autofocus system with subject detection and face/eye tracking and includes a "subject tracking IS" mode that automatically adjusts cropping to center the subject in the frame. You can use it as a 1080p webcam via the USB-C port, while connecting to your smartphone for live streaming. For photography, it sports a physical mechanical shutter and can shoot bursts at up to 30 fps with autofocus in electronic shutter mode. A welcome feature is a built-in ND filter (equivalent to three stops of light reduction) that will allow creators to add more bokeh on sunny days.
Other features include support for a smallish LP-E17 battery and a single UHS-II card slot along with microphone, headphone and microHDMI connectors. However, the PowerShot V1 isn't cheap at $900. It's set to arrive in April 2025.
The R50 V is Canon's first true mirrorless vlogging-specific camera and is clearly designed to go up against Sony's ZV-E10 II. It's slightly taller than the PowerShot V1 but has largely the same dimensions otherwise, and weighs just a bit more if you include the new 14-30mm (21-45mm full-frame equivalent) f/4-6.3 power zoom lens.
It has a nice array of manual controls including a primary control dial on top, a zoom rocker for supported lenses and an unusual mode dial that lets you select multiple custom video and vlogging modes including Movie Auto Slow Shutter, Slow/Fast Motion Recording and Movie IS Mode. For vloggers it has a fully-articulating 3-inch display but again, no electronic viewfinder.
The R50 V comes with a 24MP APS-C sensor like the EOS R50, while also including features from Canon's Cinema EOS system like C-Log3 capture and 10-bit 4:2:2 video. It can capture supersampled 4K 30 fps video using the full sensor width, 4K 60p video with a crop or 120 fps 1080p video. It's not a bad camera for photographers either, letting them shoot 12 fps bursts using the first-curtain shutter or 15 fps with the electronic shutter, all with continuous autofocus enabled.
Like the ZV-E10 II it lacks in-body stabilization but does offer optical stabilization with supported lenses, along with electronic stabilization. For situations that require extra shake reduction, the optical and electronic stabilization modes can be combined and there's an enhanced IS mode for abrupt movements like walking.
The R50 V has vlogging-friendly modes like a product showcase-type function along with focus breathing correction. You get Canon's latest Dual Pixel II autofocus system that includes face and eye detection as well as subject tracking for people, animals and vehicles (along with an auto mode). A dedicated button allows you to livestream instantly with four modes supported: UVC/UAC, HDMI, Camera Connect, and Live Switcher Mobile multi-camera. It comes with a single UHS-II card slot and an LP-E17 battery, along with microphone, headphone, microHDMI and USB-C ports.
The R50 V will cost $650 for the body only or $850 with the new RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens (sold separately for $330). Canon also announced the $1,700 RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM full-frame lens, the latest in its fast hybrid cinema-friendly series that includes the RF24mm f/1.4, RF 35mm f/1.4 and RF 50mm f/1.4 models. As mentioned, I've only had the R50 V and PowerShot V1 cameras for a short time but you can expect a full review of both models shortly.

Nothing Phone 3 review: Not quite a flagship
Nothing did things differently with its third generation of phones. First came the midrange Nothing Phone 3a (and 3a Pro), which combined stylish hardware with a competitive price. Now, the company has launched the Nothing Phone 3, which it's calling its first "true flagship." At $799, it's Nothing's most expensive phone yet, featuring a bigger screen, four 50-megapixel cameras and a major redesign of the company's signature Glyph interface, which has evolved into the more compact Glyph Matrix. Nothing's hardware design is what truly sets its phones apart from the established players, and the 2025 model is more elaborate and complex than ever. At this price, however, it faces stiff competition from entry-level flagships like the Galaxy S25 and iPhone 16. Beyond the innovations and occasional gimmicks, has Nothing nailed the fundamentals enough to compete? The Nothing Phone 3 might be the company's first 'true flagship,' but several specs don't match that flagship moniker. The bigger screen, battery and new Glyph Matrix make it a major step up from Phone 2, but camera performance is erratic and you'd expect a more powerful processor at this price. $799 at Nothing Image by Mat Smith for Engadget Once again, Nothing has made a phone that commands attention like no other. Everywhere I go, people are curious when they see me using the Phone 3, and the Glyph Matrix seems to both confuse and delight them. Unlike the protruding camera unit on the Nothing Phone 3a Pro, the Phone 3's three cameras are separately lodged in the back and jut out a fraction of a millimeter. The see-through exterior returns, displaying screws and hardware modules organized into three vertical rows. This time, it's more apparent that this is a design flourish rather than a genuine glimpse into the phone's components. For example, a curious semi-circle of frosted glass beneath the flash doesn't seem to have a purpose (beyond an aesthetic one). Elsewhere, a red square next to the ultrawide camera now acts as a recording light. It's another charming touch that can be disabled in the settings if you find it distracting. The off-center telephoto camera lens might also irk symmetry fans, but it's a choice that I don't particularly mind. The Phone 3 is 18 percent thinner than the Phone 2 and, without the camera bump of the 3a Pro, it looks and feels a step above its predecessors. The main attraction is the Glyph Matrix: a circular dot-matrix display made of 489 LEDs that shows simple notifications, the time and battery level. While some loyal fans might miss the bold light show of previous models, this iteration is far more useful. Instead of a barrage of flashing lights, the Matrix can tell you who is calling through unique patterns and, with future updates, custom art assigned to your contacts. Nothing continues to lean into its retro tech design inspiration, and I'll admit I'm a sucker for it. The dot-matrix text and numbers align perfectly with Nothing's Android skin, making the entire device feel cohesive. A capacitive haptic Glyph button beneath the Matrix lets you cycle through notifications and tools. Interactions are simple: a short press to switch modes or a long press to start tools like the stopwatch. Image by Mat Smith for Engadget Fortunately, you can use the Phone 3's settings menu to assign Glyph Matrix tools and "toys." Most of them are playful and frivolous, like Spin The Bottle and Magic 8 Ball, and Nothing is tapping into its community to create new Matrix widgets. Hopefully, functionality will expand as more users get involved. Some tools are less useful though, like a level that uses the phone's accelerometer for a pixelated readout. It just seems a little imprecise; how much accuracy can you derive from less than 500 pixels? Others are quite slick, like a pixelated camera readout for framing selfies. With Essential Notifications, you can assign specific app notifications or contacts to a unique pattern or a pixelated photo. However, it's challenging to create anything that doesn't look like a blurry mess. The same settings menu allows you to adjust the Matrix's brightness and how long the notifications persist. The front of the Phone 3 is all display, with a 6.67-inch screen and a resolution of 2,800 x 1,260. If you prefer a large screen, this is probably its biggest advantage over the iPhone 16 and Galaxy S25. It's also Nothing's brightest phone yet, reaching up to 4,500 nits for HDR content — noticeably brighter than the Nothing Phone 3a. It supports HDR 10+ and a 120Hz refresh rate, all protected by Gorilla Glass 7. Image by Mat Smith for Engadget Nothing has the fundamentals covered with the Phone 3's cameras. The triple-camera system includes a 50-megapixel f/1.7 main sensor with optical image stabilization, a 50MP ultrawide and a new 50MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. As we noted in our Nothing Phone 3a review, telephoto cameras are rare on more affordable smartphones. On the Phone 3, there's a periscope zoom, keeping the camera unit svelte and barely protruding from the device. It's also impressive to see a 3x zoom paired with a high-resolution 50-megapixel sensor, which allows you to crop into images while retaining fidelity. Nothing even added a 6x zoom button in the camera app that crops the image further. The app also uses pixel-binning for more accurate color and better low-light pictures by default, which results in them being saved as 12-megapixel images. Overall, the camera system can be a little inconsistent. During a vacation in Amsterdam, the Phone 3 captured crisp images of wildlife and architecture. Its Action mode was particularly impressive, effortlessly adding motion blur to shots while keeping the subject sharp. However, at other times, what should have been vibrant cityscape shots and street art came out muted and grainy. For example, psychedelic cat artwork that was incredibly vibrant in person looked flat in the photos. The metadata revealed the phone had cranked up the ISO, a setting I haven't had to manually adjust on a smartphone in some color variation between the three lenses is expected, images often looked as if they were taken on different phones, something that was especially evident in scenes with blue skies. The telephoto camera is the standout feature on the Phone 3. I love the ability to play with zoom, and the 3x optical zoom (plus the additional crop) makes this a more useful camera than those on the iPhone 16 or Pixel 9, which top out at 2x zoom. It's also an excellent macro camera, using the zoom to prevent the phone from casting a shadow on the subject. Image by Mat Smith for Engadget Nothing once again outfits its phone with its own distinctive Android skin. The aesthetic is all monochrome, serif fonts and dot-matrix touches. I immediately chose this skin when setting up the phone for the first time, though finding some app icons can be more challenging without their original colors. Essential Space, with its dedicated hardware button, remains Nothing's most interesting software addition. Since launching on the Nothing Phone 3a, it can now add events to your Google Calendar, remind you of tasks and summarize audio recordings. My biggest issue, however, is accidentally hitting the power button instead of the Essential Key, or vice versa. The keys need to be a different size or at least have a more distinct feel. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, the Phone 3 performs solidly, but it's not as snappy as a device with true flagship silicon, like the Snapdragon 8 Elite or Apple A18. Some might argue that the Phone 3 isn't a "true flagship" because its processor can be found in sub-$400 devices, but the chip is still powerful enough for most tasks and games, and can even deliver ray-traced graphics. Nothing opted for a 5,150mAh silicon-carbon battery, making it one of the first phones we've tested with this new technology. It can store more lithium ions than traditional lithium-ion batteries, which Nothing claims adds a 10 percent boost in energy density compared to its predecessor. I didn't feel any notable difference of the Phone 3 running cooler, however. In our battery rundown test, the Phone 3 was able to play a video file for just over 23 hours. That falls slightly shy of the Phone 2, but that has a smaller screen. The Phone 3 also gets flagship-level charging speeds, supporting 65W wired charging that gets the device from empty to full in under an hour (with a compatible charger). It also supports 15W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging for earbuds. However, the lack of Qi2 support seems like an oversight for a "true flagship." The Phone 3 offers a big 6.67-inch screen, a large battery with fast charging and 256GB of storage — double the amount found in the base Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25. However, a less-than-flagship chipset and inconsistent camera performance detract from the appeal of an otherwise intriguing phone with slick software and a unique design. The Glyph Matrix is much more useful than the flashing lights of the Phone 3's predecessors, even if the design isn't quite as bold. I just hope the company continues to evolve the tools available on it. The Phone 3 is a much better phone than the two-year-old Nothing Phone 2, but it's also $200 more expensive, making any shortcomings more apparent. While I want Nothing to continue experimenting with its phones, it should probably prioritize shoring up the camera performance first.

Leaked PS6 specs put the PS5 to shame and may be much cheaper than we thought
A new batch of leaks has surfaced regarding the rumored PS6 that will be music to any PlayStation fan's ears. This comes hot off the heels of the recent leaks that implied the PS6 could have a very heavy price tag based on the chipset, although there was some speculation as to whether or not that chip was actually for the PS6 and not the next Xbox console. Our latest leaks come from our old friend over at Moore's Law is Dead (MLID), who has shared what they claim to be from an AMD presentation from 2023. As always, MLID goes into all the nitty-gritty details of the chips, compte units, bits, and other technical jargon if you want the full deep dive. If not, the most important takeaways here are that the PS6, which is codenamed 'Orion', will reportedly be 3x faster than the base PS5 and draw less power. But the real bit of juicy info is that MLID thinks that the specifications outlined here mean Sony would be able to keep the price at around $500. Further details state that the PS6 will be comparable to an RTX 4080 in terms of performance, with better Ray Tracing, full backwards compatibility with the PS5 and PS4, and plans to begin manufacturing in late 2027. If all these specs are true, we could see games run at 4K 60FPS or 8K 60 on the PlayStation 6 thanks to PSSR. Recommended Videos Now, before we get too excited about all this, remember that these are still just leaks. While MLID has proven to be reliable in the past, it is important to always take information like this with a grain of salt, and that is especially true here since the information claims to be from 2023. Even if it is legitimate, a lot could have changed in the two years since. Still, this new price estimate is far more palatable than the previous one that breached $1,000.

PS6 and new PlayStation handheld specs reportedly leak — and suggest a huge upgrade over PS5
Sony's plans for its rumored PS6 and PlayStation handheld are heating up, following reports of the console's codenames (Orion and Canis or Robin and Robin Plus, respectively) and being powered by AMD APUs. Now, we may have seen a glimpse of the power they deliver. A new leak from YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead (via Wccftech) has revealed specs for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 6 and handheld console. Apparently the PS6 is aiming for a 160W TBP, along with a chip with 8 Zen 6 cores and somewhere between 40 and 48 RDNA 5 compute units. This is actually fewer compute units compared to the PS5 Pro, which offers 60. However, with AMD's RDNA 5 architecture, each unit is expected to deliver more power than what Sony's current consoles push out. What's more, it's said that the PS6 will utilize GDDR7 video memory (what you'll find in RTX 50-series GPUs), providing a higher estimated bandwidth. As per the leak, it's expected that the PS6 will offer triple the rasterization performance over the PS5, and double that of the PS5 Pro. Rasterization is the technique of using computer graphics to convert 3D objects to a 2D display, and the faster the performance, the better the frame rates and visual smoothness. Apparently, this puts it around the power of an RTX 4080, but it's harder to directly compare a console and a PC's performance. What's more, ray tracing performance is also expected to see a boost, following on from what the PS5 Pro's current PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) upscaling tech offers (and the upgrade coming in 2026). As for the PS handheld, its chip will reportedly come with 4 Zen 6C cores and between 12 and 20 RDNA 5 compute units, based on 15W power. This puts it at half the rasterization power of a PS5, based on estimates, which is impressive for a handheld. But more importantly, with RDNA 5, it will also see a big boost in ray tracing potential. The specs from Moore's Law is Dead come from a leaked AMD presentation in 2023. It's been some time since then, so these specs may have changed since then. However, it does give us a sneak peek at what the rumored PS6 and PlayStation handheld will offer. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As per the leak, we may also have a hint at the price and release date of the upcoming PlayStation consoles. However, take this with a grain of salt, seeing as the leak is from a presentation a while back. The PS6 is expected to go into production in mid-2027, with a release then tipped for late 2027 or early 2028. It's said to be priced at $499, just like the PS5 when it launched. The rumored PlayStation handheld is tipped to launch around the same time, with prices between $400 and $500. This has been rumored before, and it's looking likely that both consoles will launch at the same time to complement one another. Sony is believed to also bring PS5 and PS4 backwards compatibility to its console, with PlayStation Plus probably continuing to bring games from further back. Of course, we won't know for sure if these specs will arrive on a PS6 and PlayStation handheld, but they do give us an idea of the performance gains Sony may be planning to offer.
