Politics of division creeping into Kerala society: Minister Saji Cherian
Speaking at a function in Alappuzha on Wednesday, Mr. Cherian said that while one group was opposing zumba dance, another was deliberately targeting the film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala.
Terming the Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (CASA) 'a communal outfit', the Minister said it was spreading anti-Muslim propaganda. 'CASA has the backing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Their aim is to create division in society,' Mr. Cherian said.
'Communal agendas'
He said the actor in the film JSK is a BJP leader. 'Janaki is the name of a deity. Films with this title have been released in Kerala in the past without sparking any controversy. But now, those currently in the censor board are promoting communal agendas,' the Minister said.
He questioned whose interests the Opposition was seeking to protect in Kerala. 'Whatever indecent or communal statements someone makes, the Opposition in Kerala is turning them into political weapons to gain support from communal forces,' Mr. Cherian said.
He also alleged that the Congress party was increasingly being overshadowed by the Indian Union Muslim League.

Special Court set to rule on 2008 Malegaon Bombing Thursday
Mumbai, July 29 (UNI) Nearly 17 years after a fatal explosion tore through the communally sensitive town of Malegaon, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court will finally deliver its verdict this Thursday, July 31. The 2008 blast, occurring on September 29 during the holy month of Ramzan and coinciding with the Navratri festival eve, claimed six lives and left 100 others injured in the Muslim-majority town in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The protracted legal journey reaches a pivotal moment after the court reserved its orders on April 19. While initially directing the seven accused to appear on May 8 for the judgement, the pronouncement was subsequently rescheduled for July 31. The complex investigation saw initial handling by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), led by the late Special Inspector General Hemant Karkare, who was later killed during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The ATS filed its chargesheet in 2009. However, the case was in 2011 transferred to the NIA, which submitted a supplementary chargesheet in 2016. Although the NIA largely concurred with the ATS's findings, it differed on specific aspects, notably recommending the dropping of stringent charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), a recommendation the court accepted. The trial, conducted by the special court in Mumbai, proceeded under charges framed on October 30, 2018. The seven accused face prosecution under critical sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including Sections 16 (committing a terrorist act) and 18 (conspiring to commit a terrorist act), alongside various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 153(a) (promoting enmity between different religious groups). The accused standing trial are former BJP Member of Parliament Pragya Singh Thakur, retired Military Intelligence official Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi. The prosecution presented a total of 323 witnesses during the lengthy trial. However, the proceedings were marked by the significant challenge of 34 witnesses turning hostile. Naxal killed, three security personnel injured in Chhattisgarh encounter
Sukma, July 29 (PTI) A Naxalite was killed and three security personnel were injured in an IED blast during an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday, a police officer said. He said a joint team of security personnel on an anti-Naxal operation and Maoists exchanged fire in the forest along the Sukma-Dantewada inter-district border. The operation, involving personnel of the Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on Monday based on inputs about the presence of Maoists in the area, said Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan. During the search of the encounter site, security personnel found the body of a male Naxalite along with a huge cache of arms, ammunition, and explosive materials. 'Three personnel belonging to DRG sustained injuries in a pressure IED blast during the operation. All injured personnel have been safely evacuated and are being referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Their condition is currently stable and out of danger," Chavan said. He said that as the operation is still underway, other details cannot be discussed. With the latest gunfight, 226 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh so far this year. Of them, 208 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which includes districts of Bijapur, Bastar, Kanker, Konadagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, and Dantewada. Indian delegation in Syria: First diplomatic visit since Al Sharaa toppled Assad regime

Last year, opposition forces led by Sharaa's Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) escalated their offensive in November. 'The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Mr Asaad Hassan Al-Sheibani, received in the capital Damascus an Indian delegation headed by Mr Suresh Kumar, Director of the West Asia and North Africa Department at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The meeting addressed issues of common interest and ways to enhance relations between the two countries in a manner that serves the interests of both peoples,' said the Syrian foreign ministry in a statement on X. There have been concerns about the new administration in Syria, owing to the jihadist past of its leader and group —the HTS— that he runs. Moreover, Sharaa's principal supporter, Turkey, has pursued an overtly anti-India agenda lately, supporting Pakistan not just diplomatically but also militarily. 'A beginning had to be made' While there was no official word, a person familiar with the matter told Hindustan Times that India sent a delegation as 'a beginning had to be made' at some point about a bilateral relationship with the new Syrian administration. With Assad, India had a comfortable relationship and Assad sided with India even on the issue of Kashmir on international platforms. India also regularly sent humanitarian support to Syria. Beside the foreign minister, Kumar also met Syrian health minister Musab Al-Ali and the two sides discussed ways of enhancing health cooperation, particularly in the pharmaceutical industries and medical training fields, as per the news agency. The two sides discussed mechanism for implementing a scholarship for Syrian students, in addition to allocating a specialised engineering cooperation programme for government employees, the agency reported. Al-Ali said that Syria aspired to establish a 'strong partnership with India in the pharmaceutical industries and health technologies, which would contribute to supporting the national health sector and providing medicines', the agency reported. On his part, Kumar said that India will continue to fund specialised training courses for Syrian personnel, coordinate the training of Syrian doctors in Indian centers, and enhance cooperation in the fields of nursing, pharmaceutical industries, and pharmaceutical exports, the agency reported.
