Plettenberg Bay court hands down 20-year sentence for brutal attack on elderly couple
The aftermath of the violent robbery that shocked the Plettenberg Bay community, leading to a 20-year prison sentence for the perpetrator.

The Plettenberg Bay Regional Court has sentenced a man to 20 years direct imprisonment following his conviction for an attack on an elderly couple who were robbed.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said a panga-wielding Cole Bruiners robbed the couple in January 2024, as they walked along Challenge Drive.
He wanted to rob the woman of her bag, but she resisted.
Ntabazalila said a struggle ensued, and Bruiners assaulted her with the panga, leaving her with bruises and cuts on her upper body.
He also stabbed her husband on the head as he tried to stop the robbery, leaving the husband with a laceration to the left side of his skull.
"The accused took the couple's hats before he fled," Ntabazalila said.
"The incident was caught on CCTV cameras, and the footage was widely circulated. He was recognised by a member of the community forum, and a search ensued for his arrest.
"He was arrested the following day, and the police found him with the panga. He cooperated with members of the community forum and the police and pointed out where he sold the stolen items.
"The couple's items were later recovered."

The court sentenced Bruiners to 15 years direct imprisonment for each count of robbery with aggravating circumstances and ordered the second count of robbery with aggravating circumstances to run concurrently with the first count of the same crime.
He was effectively sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment.

Hawks secure court order for vehicle used to ferry R6m drugs
THE Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit scored a major victory when they were granted a preservation order for a vehicle they seized in a multi-million drug bust near Strand. Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi said the Hyundai H1 which was estimated to be valued at R138 600.00 was seized as it was used as an instrumentality. 'This was after members of the Hawks' South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau(SANEB) acted on intelligence received on 23 August 2024, regarding a Hyundai H1 that was transporting drugs from Gauteng to Cape Town. The vehicle was spotted on the N2 near Strand towards Cape Town. Upon search, 71 000 mandrax tablets and 14 bricks of cocaine weighing 14kg were found concealed in panels of the vehicle,' he said.

Farm attack gang sentenced to life for Limpopo farmers murder
Prosecutors described the crime as 'premeditated executed with extreme violence'. Three men have been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of a 35-year-old farmer, Nicolaas 'Nicci' Janse van Rensburg, in Limpopo. Malesela Albert Mangena (35), Velly Segwale (35), and Lesiba Solly Segwale (45) appeared in the Polokwane High Court on Monday, where the sentence was handed down. The trio was also handed a combined additional 42 years' imprisonment for multiple related offences. Conviction The sentence for the farmer's murder comes after their conviction on 11 June in what prosecutors described as a 'premeditated crime executed with extreme violence'. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the three men were found guilty on several charges, including conspiracy to commit robbery, murder, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlicensed ammunition. Therefore, the effective sentence is life imprisonment. The court further declared the accused unfit to possess firearms under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.' 'The NPA remains committed to delivering justice for victims of violent crimes, especially those murdered in cold blood for their belongings.
