Defence Ministry will continue to put Armed Forces' readiness first, says Khaled Nordin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry will continue to prioritise the readiness of the Armed Forces in line with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's decree, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The Defence Minister said the ministry would do so while modernising the country's defence assets, including those for the Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK).
"In line with His Majesty's decree, the ministry will continue prioritising the readiness of the armed forces while modernising the country's defence assets, including those for the RGK.
"To all members and veterans of the Gerak Khas Regiment, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on its 60th anniversary,' he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (Aug 16).
Earlier, Sultan Ibrahim attended the 60th Anniversary Parade of the elite regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing.
The parade featured five detachments comprising 18 officers and 173 personnel members from the 11th Special Service Regiment, 21st Commando Regiment, 22nd Commando Regiment, the Combined Unit and the Army Special Warfare Training Centre (Pulpak).
Since its establishment in 1965, the regiment has undergone a remarkable transformation. What began as a small unit has grown into a modern special forces regiment operating across multiple domains.
During the event, Sultan Ibrahim issued a stern reminder to the Defence Ministry not to repeat past mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft that could endanger the lives of pilots and military personnel.
His Majesty said the nation's experience in purchasing second-hand Skyhawk aircraft should serve as a lesson, as the planes could not be fully utilised.
"Do not repeat the past mistake, like when we bought second-hand Skyhawks… are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? Think for yourselves.
"I believe all this happens because the Defence Ministry is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, and even textile traders trying to sell drones,' he said.

Dr M visits Nagasaki to commemorate 80th anniversary of atomic bombing

Photo taken from Facebook. KUALA LUMPUR: Earlier this month, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited Nagasaki in Japan to mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing. His visit, from Aug 8 to 11, commenced at the Nagai Takashi Memorial Museum, which pays tribute to Dr Nagai Takashi, a radiologist from Nagasaki Medical College who lost his wife in the tragedy. "Despite his grief and his own leukaemia caused by radiation, Dr Nagai devoted his remaining years to treating survivors — his life story now standing as a symbol of resilience and humanity," he said in a Facebook post on Saturday (Aug 17). During the trip, Dr Mahathir delivered a speech and engaged with young participants at the Youth Peace Forum, urging nations to resolve disputes through dialogue instead of war. He also visited the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Memorial at ground zero and met with two surviving hibakusha (bomb survivors) together with co-chairperson of 2024 Nobel Peace Prize-winning group, Nihon Hidankyō. 'Nagasaki is a living reminder that war brings only destruction. "The atomic bomb did not just kill hundreds of thousands instantly, but left behind pain and suffering for generations. It is a wound that never truly heals.' He continued by stressing that peace must be defended as a universal responsibility: 'We must remember that peace is not automatic. It requires effort, patience, and the will to put aside anger and vengeance. Dialogue and understanding are the only true ways forward if we wish to avoid repeating the mistakes of history. 'The people of Nagasaki rebuilt their city from the ashes. Today, it stands as proof that peace opens the path to progress and prosperity. This is the legacy we must safeguard and pass on to the next generation.' The visit concluded with a meeting with Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki, where Dr Mahathir reiterated Malaysia's solidarity in advocating for peace and nuclear disarmament.
