Manchester United set to appoint Brentford's Stephen Torpey to lead academy

Manchester United are set to appoint Brentford's Stephen Torpey to lead their academy.
Torpey has been Brentford's academy director since January 2024, having previously served as head of academy coaching at United's rivals Manchester City.
The 43-year-old is set to become the first major hire under director of football Jason Wilcox and replace outgoing director of academy Nick Cox in the role. Cox has overseen United's youth system for six years and is due to join Everton as technical director after agreeing the move in June.
While Cox has been in the role, his remit extended to recruitment, retention, coaching, medical, logistics and education in a strategic leadership role requiring a broad knowledge across a variety of disciplines.
Under Torpey, Brentford were academy awarded Category Two status as the under-9s to under-16s age groups were reintroduced, following the relaunch of the club's academy in 2022 after spending six years following a B team model.
Torpey began his youth coaching career with Liverpool in 2008, working as a lead foundation coach across multiple age groups before joining City in 2014.

He was brought in to implement a Barcelona-style coaching syllabus which eventually helped the club's youth teams to win trophies while playing an identifiable style of football, with a focus on individual concepts such as ball mastery, and team-based ideas like possession-based, attacking football.
Among those to come through the youth system and be successfully integrated into senior football under Torpey are Rico Lewis, Cole Palmer and James McAtee, with the latter two leaving the club to join Chelsea and Nottingham Forest respectively.
As well as helping lead the academy at City, Torpey was also head of coaching and played a role in player recruitment.
This is the latest development in what has been a summer of change for Brentford, having seen head coach Thomas Frank join Tottenham Hotspur and being replaced by former set piece coach Keith Andrews. Backroom staff members Justin Cochrane, Chris Haslam and Joe Newton all also left the club to join Frank at Spurs.

Can Caleb Williams and Chicago's new leadership spark a Bears resurgence in five years?

Can Caleb Williams and Chicago's new leadership spark a Bears resurgence in five years? originally appeared on The Sporting News The Chicago Bears are on the cusp of an organizational reset. With a new coaching staff led by former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the NFL's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Caleb Williams, the franchise has an opportunity to reshape its trajectory over the next five years. The Bears' potential success hinges on a combination of player development, coaching stability, and front-office strategy. Caleb Williams brings elite talent and a winning mentality to the Bears. His progression as a quarterback will dictate how quickly Chicago can rise back into contention. Surrounded by a promising supporting cast—including WR Rome Odunze, edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo, and rookie tight end Colston Loveland, Williams has the pieces to succeed if the coaching staff can maximize his skill set. General manager Ryan Poles has endured three seasons of disappointing results, but the new leadership changes suggest a willingness to take calculated risks for long-term success. The Bears' front office must ensure that Williams and the young talent around him develop in sync, balancing immediate competitiveness with the creation of a sustainable core capable of contending for years to come. Chicago's position on a 5-year outlook chart reflects optimism tempered by reality. The team has high-end potential thanks to its quarterback and supporting talent, but any missteps in development or strategy could force a future reset. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Bears can avoid the pitfalls of rebuilding mismanagement that have hindered other franchises. The team's trajectory will also rely heavily on the coaching staff's ability to maintain stability and adapt to the NFL's evolving landscape. Johnson's leadership, combined with a clear vision from the front office, could give Williams the environment needed to thrive. If executed properly, the Bears have a legitimate path to competitiveness over the next five years. Chicago's future will be defined by quarterback progression, coaching stability, and the development of its young stars. With careful planning and execution, Caleb Williams could emerge as one of the league's premier quarterbacks, and the Bears could transform from a struggling franchise into a consistent contender. The next five years will be critical for determining whether potential translates into sustained success.

Charlotte's Malanda to join Middlesbrough in January

Follow live updates as Alexander Isak's Newcastle future continues to dominate the summer transfer windowMiddlesbrough have completed the signing of Adilson Malanda from Charlotte FC in a deal worth around £6million ($8.1m). Malanda was in Middlesbrough last weekend to agree terms before returning to the U.S. to finish the MLS season, and is expected be available for the English Championship side from January. The 23-year-old French defender joined Charlotte in 2022 from French Ligue 2 side Rodez, and has gone on to make 71 MLS appearances. The fee is undisclosed, but Middlesbrough, who have started the Championship season with wins in their opening two games, have spent around £12million on six new recruits in the past month, not including the fee for Malanda. Rob Edwards' squad have added Alfie Jones (Hull City), Abdoulaye Kante (Troyes), Callum Brittain (Blackburn Rovers), Sontje Hansen (NEC Nimegen) and, on loan from Manchester City, the highly-rated Norwegian teenager Sverre Nypan. Middlesbrough can balance their books having brought in around £16m from the sales of Rav van den Berg to Cologne and Josh Coburn to Millwall. There remains interest in Hayden Hackney — Ipswich bid £20m for the midfielder two weeks ago — but Hackney appears determined to stay at the Riverside Stadium unless an offer arrives from a Premier League club. Getty Images Rico Lewis committing his future to City removes one piece of uncertainty hanging over the club. Nottingham Forest had initially enquired about him during talks over the signing of fellow academy product James McAtee and with City having to reduce their squad size, it was unclear whether the club would stand in his way. But Lewis made clear after impressing in the season opener against Wolves that he 'had never imagined' himself playing anywhere else. Pep Guardiola has always shown an appreciation for Lewis' understanding of the game, which is why he has made 95 appearances by the age of 20. However, Matheus Nunes had usurped Lewis at right-back towards the end of the season and he was left out of the FA Cup final squad. A red card in the first game of the Club World Cup robbed him of the next two games and his position in the squad looked uncertain. This new deal is a show of faith in the 20-year-old but also demonstrates that he believes he will continue to play regularly enough to justify staying at City rather than dropping down a level. With the World Cup next year, it is a big season for the five-cap England international to stake his claim and he will surely look to lock down the right-back position as his City and Rico Lewis are close to an agreement over a new contract. Nothing has been signed but all sides are working towards the England international renewing until 2030 with the Premier League club. The deal will also include an option to extend by 12 months. The new contract follows interest from Nottingham Forest, who were previously working on a deal to sign the 20-year-old. Lewis' current deal at the Etihad Stadium is set to run until 2028. Getty Images So far, Fulham's only signing of the summer transfer window has been back-up goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, who arrived from Montpellier for £500,000 ($675,000). The situation has not impressed Fulham manager Marco Silva. 'It's not an ideal scenario,' he said ahead of Fulham's Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion. 'I didn't expect us to be this passive. I knew what I wanted and the plan was there, but it hasn't happened. We need to reinforce. In some positions, we are very short. 'Did I expect it? Of course not, but the market is the market.' Silva is not the only manager dissatisfied with their club's transfer activity, however. Read more below. GO FURTHER 'Not ideal' – Fulham's Marco Silva and the Premier League coaches frustrated by a lack of signings Franck Fife/AFP via Getty Images Marseille say they have transfer listed winger Jonathan Rowe and midfielder Adrien Rabiot as a result of what they describe as 'unacceptable behaviour' from both players following their opening game of the Ligue 1 season. Roberto de Zerbi's side were beaten 1-0 by Rennes on Friday following an added-time winner from Ludovic Blas. Rennes had played the majority of the game with 10 players after defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal was sent off in the 31st minute. According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday, Marseille have decided to sell Rowe and Rabiot, who both started the match, based on their reaction to the defeat in the changing room after full-time, with the players being informed of the situation earlier this week. "This decision was taken due to unacceptable behaviour in the dressing room after the match against Stade Rennais FC, in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct," Marseille Zealand international Marko Stamenic has left Nottingham Forest to join Swansea City. The midfielder, who joined from Red Star Belgrade in June 2024 for a fee of around £4.5million, spent last season on loan with Forest's sister club, Olympiacos. He made 23 appearances for the Greek side, including four in the Europa League and has been a regular on the international stage, along with Forest striker Chris Wood. But he was not part of Nuno Espirito Santo's plans — particularly with Forest having strengthened their midfield options significantly this summer. A deal has been agreed with Juventus to take Douglas Luiz on loan, with an obligation and option to make the move permanent for €30million, depending on how many appearances the former Aston Villa player makes. Stamenic will now continue his career in the have been extremely active in the market over recent days with deals secured for Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee and Arnaud Kalimuendo. That business followed the club-record move for Dan Ndoye from Bologna earlier in the window while the pursuit of Rico Lewis from Manchester City is continuing. The Athletic reported earlier today that the club are exploring a reunion with Matty Cash from Aston Villa, too. Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus have also arrived from Botafogo, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn was signed on a free Forest have agreed a deal to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus. The move will see the 27-year-old Brazil international move on loan with an obligation to buy based on the number of games he plays for the Premier League club. Forest also hold the option to make the transfer permanent for a fee in the region of €30million in case he doesn't appear in the required amount of matches. Agyemang then shone as an impact substitute at the Euros in Switzerland, scoring twice as England lifted the trophy. GO FURTHER Brighton re-sign England Euros winner Michelle Agyemang on loan from Arsenal Getty Images Despite the signing of Viktor Gyokeres, Germany international Kai Havertz has remained a big part of Arteta's plans. He missed much of the second half of last season after undergoing hamstring surgery, and the decision to sign Gyokeres was made partly to ensure Arsenal would have sufficient depth and quality in the centre-forward position. If Havertz is out for a prolonged period again, it arguably puts them back where they started. It's now utterly essential that Gyokeres stays fit, and makes a swift adaptation to life in the Premier League. Currently, Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard would be the Sweden international's immediate back-ups. The prognosis for Havertz may also have an impact on Arsenal's plans in the remainder of the transfer window. If Havertz has to undergo surgery, or faces several months on the sidelines, they may have to consider re-entering the market to strengthen their attack. Getty Images Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The 26-year-old Germany international was not part of an open training session at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday morning. Assessments are at an early stage so the prognosis and duration of any lay-off is unclear. Arsenal are, however, actively exploring the transfer market to potentially reinforce their attack and cover the absence of Havertz. New signing Viktor Gyokeres is now the only recognised striker fit and available in Mikel Arteta's squad. Leandro Trossard, who has recently agreed to a new contract with the club, has also featured there previously. Gabriel Jesus, a more tried and tested option, is still recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January and is not expected back for some time. The Pride, who play in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), are expected to spend $1.5million (£1.1m) in fees to acquire the forward. The women's transfer record has already been broken once this summer, with Arsenal signing Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool in a £1million ($1.3m) deal. Ovalle, 25, has spent her entire senior career with Mexican top-flight side Tigres. She broke into the first team in 2017 and has won six Liga MX Feminil titles. The Athletic reported that Spurs are in a one-horse race for the 27-year-old after north London rivals Arsenal cooled their interest. Thomas Frank's side have been in the market for an attacking midfielder this summer and saw a move for Morgan Gibbs-White break down after he signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest. Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey has joined Roma on a season-long loan. Here is what he had to say after picking up his award. 💬 'It's an incredible feeling. I want to thank everyone who voted for me. Doing this at the age of 33 is incredible. I remember ten years ago I didn't make it at Chelsea. When you go somewhere and you don't make it, it's always on your mind. 'I look at myself, a guy coming from Egypt, making it to the top level and making history.' Nottingham Forest are exploring a deal to re-sign Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash. The 28-year-old is among Forest's options as they look to strengthen the right side of defence. The club have also been pursuing a deal for Manchester City's Rico Lewis. Villa have not received a formal approach, with Cash's current contract, which he signed in April 2022, running until 2027. There have been discussions over extending his stay in recent months. A move to the City Ground would see Cash return to the club where he began his senior career and made 141 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists. The right-sided forward topped all the summer fitness tests and benefited from a quiet pre-season. He made a blistering start to the campaign and his goals helped Liverpool pull away from their title rivals. By the turn of the year he was talked about as a potential Ballon d'Or winner but Liverpool's Champions League exit put at end to that. What also made his season so special was that he started every Premier League game and led by example, even before signing a new two-year contract extension. Without him Liverpool wouldn't have been able to secure their 20th title.
