'Irreplaceable' cyclist, 19, dies after horrific crash during race
Promising young cyclist Samuele Privitera has sadly passed away after a crash at the first stage of the Giro Valle d'Aosta.
Privitera, 19, was rushed to hospital after the incident during a descent in Pontey, Italy, on Wednesday, but died following his injuries. He had been riding for the Hagens Berman Jayco team in the Under-23 race, and organisers have cancelled the second stage of the event scheduled for Thursday.
Privitera was known for his climbs, and came in 63rd place in the Under-23s tour of Italy.
Team owner Axel Merckx said: "It is with a very heavy heart that I share news no one in our community ever wanted to hear. Our rider, our teammate, and our dear friend, Samuele Privitera, has passed away following the race yesterday at Giro Val d'Aosta.
"Samuele was and always will be the life and personality of this team. This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable. He was irreplaceable.
"His joy, his spirit, his kindness, was always a bright light to whatever room or race that he was in at that moment. To lose him is devastating beyond words. Personally, I am struggling to express the sadness I feel but I am deeply grateful for every moment we shared with him and for the joy he brought to our team every single day.
"He loved the bike, he loved the camera, he loved to smile, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family and his teammates.

UCI, one of Hagens Berman Jayco's rival teams, said: "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and everyone who supported him. Samuele's loss is felt across the cycling community."
Team Israel - Premier Tech added: "Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to Samuele's family and friends, the Hagens Berman Jayco team, and the Valle d'Aosta peloton after this devastating loss."
GreenEDGE Cycling said: "The entire organisation mourns the loss of such an incredible, talented rider, with a big heart and special personality."

Rahaman would regularly spar with his brother and Muhammad's daughter Hana spoke of their "extraordinary bond" in an emotional tribute to her uncle. "Today, the last living member of my father's immediate family returned to heaven," Hana wrote. "My Uncle, lovingly known as Rock, was a sweet, gentle soul with a heart as big as the world. "He had that same sparkle in his eye that my father had… that same light, that same mischief, that same love. They were close their entire lives, brothers by blood, but friends by choice. Kyren Wilson ends Zhao Xintong's epic winning run in style at Shanghai Masters
Kyren Wilson is into the Shanghai Masters final (Picture: Getty Images) Zhao Xintong's 26-match winning run was ended unceremoniously by Kyren Wilson who beat the world champion 10-5 in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals. The Cyclone was last beaten in November by Shaun Murphy at the UK Championship, winning a string of games on the amateur circuit before romping to World Championship victory at the Crucible. The Shanghai Masters was the first time Zhao was in action since his Crucible triumph and he looked good in beating Chris Wakelin and Ding Junhui to reach the final four. The 28-year-old continued to impress in the first session of the semi, leading 5-4 with breaks of 121, 113 and 95 along the way. However, he pretty much collapsed in the evening session, with Wilson playing very nicely, but Zhao a long way from his best as the Englishman won six frames on the bounce to reach the final. It wasn't clear what caused the sharp downward turn in Zhao's form, but he missed a number of easy balls, often after potting trickier ones to get in. The Warrior was happy to accept the gifts and continues a brilliant run which has seen him beat Si Jiahui 6-5 and Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-3. Carter was in trouble again in the semis at 8-6 behind against Mark Selby, but reeled off four frames on the spin to win 10-6. 'I was just out there competing,' said Carter. 'At 8-6 down he missed a blue and it gave me a glimmer of hope. It was very pleasing to get over the line with a one visit. 'I've been 5-2 down twice and 8-6 here. I've been looking to go home and move my flight forward. It is as simple as that. You can have all of the positive things said to you, think this and think that, but the secret is to not think anything. I shouldn't be here now really. 2025 UK Athletics Champs carry more intrigue than they have for years
Going into this weekend, two Scots know their ticket to Tokyo is already confirmed. Josh Kerr, as reigning 1500m world champion, has automatic qualification into this year's World Championships and Megan Keith courtesy of her victory at the British 10,000m Championships in June but is absent this weekend, has ensured her place in the British team for the World Championships is also secured. For the rest, however, this weekend is vitally important. Selection is dependent upon athletes having secured World Athletics' qualification mark, as well as finishing inside the top two at this year's UK Championships. A third athlete can also be selected, at the discretion of the British selectors, as long as the athlete has the qualification standard under their belt. With Kerr absent from the 1500m start list - the Olympic silver medallist will instead contest the 5000m this weekend rather than his specialist distance - things are somewhat more open than they may have been otherwise. 2022 world champion, Jake Wightman, has been plagued by injury since winning that world title three years ago but the past few months had suggested the Edinburgh runner was finally approaching something close to full fitness once again. The 31-year-old had been favourite for the British title this weekend but his last-minute withdrawal due to a stomach bug is a blip in his season that he could have done without. However, Englishman Elliot Giles will push Gourley hard for top spot. The women's 1500m will be equally interesting. Englishwoman Georgia Hunter Bell has been the stand-out British athlete this summer and as an Olympic medallist and British record holder over the distance, is tipped to successfully defend her 1500m outdoor title that she won for the first time last summer. Former British number one, Laura Muir, will be her closest challenger. Muir's competitive appearances have been few and far between this year due to an injury-hit winter and the Milnathort native has looked some way off her best when she has competed. But despite this, it seems unlikely that Muir won't do enough to book her ticket to Tokyo, even if she doesn't add to the four British outdoor titles she already has to her name. Kilbarchan's Jemma Reelkie will also be on the 1500m start line, as will Glaswegian Erin Wallace. The women's 800m carries a degree of jeopardy for Reekie in terms of World Championships qualification. With 800m Olympic champion, Keely Hodgkinson, missing this British Championships due to injury, assuming she'll be fit come the World Championships, she's all but guaranteed to be the selectors' pick. Which leaves no room for error for Reekie as she aims for a top two spot. Jemma Reekie will be hoping to win the 800m title (Image: Reuters) With Hunter Bell doubling-up and running the 800m as well as the 1500m this weekend, the Englishwoman is tipped to win the 800m British title for the fist time. Taking into account Reekie's experience and pedigree, she's expected to come at least second but with 2024 Olympian Phoebe Gill on the start line, a ticket to Paris is by no means guaranteed for the Scot. Reekie's compatriots, Wallace and Sarah Calvert could also push the favourites hard. In the 3000m steeplechase, new Scottish record holder, Sarah Tait is on for a top two finish but will need to drop nine seconds on her personal best to secure World Championships selection. In the sprints, Alyson Bell and Alisha Rees are in action, Nicole Yeargin is in the 400m while on the field, Nick Percy has already thrown the discus qualifying distance and only needs to finish inside the top two to ensure he's heading to Tokyo.
