Kelantan cuts waste by 30% via recycling, aims for 2025 target
State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said current efforts have cut landfill waste by nearly 30 per cent.
This reduction has lowered disposal costs for the Kota Bharu Municipal Council Islamic City (MPKB-BRI) and extended the Beris Lalang landfill's lifespan.
Hilmi highlighted the success of Drive-Through Recycling Centres (DTRC) in Panji and Kubur Maras, funded under the Housing and Local Government Ministry's Sejati Madani programme.
'These centres allow the public to send separated recyclables conveniently while also creating economic opportunities and side income,' he said.
He urged expanding the initiative to all districts under the National Cleanliness Policy, which promotes recycling centres in residential, commercial, and educational areas.
Seven local councils in Kelantan already offer DTRC services, with plans to extend them to all councils this year.
The Panji DTRC collected 6,382 kg of recyclables last year, while Kubur Maras, operational since February, recorded 112 kg.
Hilmi added that the state is reviewing the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) for possible adoption.
A recent visit to Kedah studied its enforcement of the Act, but no final decision has been made.
Seven states, including Kedah and Johor, have adopted Act 672, while Penang, Perak, Terengganu, Selangor, and Kelantan have yet to do so. - Bernama

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said each family would be given a free replacement house, while three temples would be rebuilt on the original sites. He said the land acquisition process for 2.49ha was completed last year under Sections 4 and 8 of the Land Acquisition Act 1960, following an agreement with the landowner as a long-term solution for the residents. Each family will receive a single-storey terraced house measuring 750 sq ft with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and parking space in front. 'A company has been selected to develop this project. It must first submit a planning permission plan. If approved soon, we expect construction to begin early next year,' he said. Earlier, Chow witnessed the signing ceremony of the joint development agreement for the RMKu housing development project between Penang State Housing Board chief business officer Fakhurrazi Ibnu Omar and Sierra Residences (M) Sdn Bhd director Khoek Su Kiang. At the ceremony, there was also a handover of offer letters to the buyers of RMKu's Residensi Rambai Indah and Harbour View Residence projects. Chow said the project involved the construction of 85 houses to be implemented in phases. However, the priority will be to first complete 23 units to be handed over to the residents, while the remaining 62 houses will be offered for sale to interested parties. He said the residents need not relocate during construction because there is sufficient land available as a 'buffer', and they can move into their new homes once they are completed. One of the residents, V Thangaraja, expressed joy that the land dispute had finally been resolved after 10 years. 'Before this, we didn't know where to go as our predecessors had lived in the settlement for over 100 years since the time of our grandparents,' said Thangaraja, adding that they were estate workers.

KPKT seeks RM1 billion boost for public cleaning and EV transition
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) aims to secure over RM1 billion in additional funding to enhance public cleaning efforts. This follows agreements with Selangor and Penang to adopt Act 672, streamlining waste management policies. Minister Nga Kor Ming stated the funds will support reforms like converting 20% of cleaning vehicles to electric models by 2027. 'This aligns with Malaysia's decarbonisation goals for a zero-carbon economy,' he said. Night-time cleaning and deep-cleaning programmes at tourist spots will also be introduced. Nga shared these plans after a Budget 2026 engagement session with KPKT stakeholders. Deputy Minister Datuk Hajah Aiman Athirah Sabu and Secretary-General Datuk M Noor Azman Taib also attended. Over 300 stakeholders submitted 55 proposals, including input from REHDA and volunteer fire teams. 'We'll refine these proposals for submission to the Finance Ministry by September 4,' Nga added. Budget 2026 will feature 10+ new initiatives, including 10,000 public infrastructure projects. Last year, KPKT completed 6,611 projects like parks and hawker centres. Nga proposed doubling the Federal Small Allocation to RM500 million for 2026. The ministry will also push for the MADANI Home Ownership Programme to revive the property sector. KPKT Targets Additional RM1 Mln Allocatiion For Public Clearning Efforts
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is targeting an additional allocation of over RM1 billion to intensify public cleaning efforts following the agreement of the Selangor and Penang state governments to adopt Act 672. Its minister, Nga Kor Ming said the additional allocation will enable the implementation of several reforms, including the target of 20 per cent of public cleaning vehicles switching to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2027. 'This is in line with the national decarbonisation policy towards a zero-carbon economy. KPKT will also introduce public cleaning initiatives at night as well as deep cleaning programmes in tourist hotspots to keep them free from dust and garbage," he said. Nga said this to the media after attending the Budget 2026 Initiative Engagement Session with KPKT Stakeholders here today. Today's event was also attended by KPKT deputy minister Datuk Hajah Aiman Athirah Sabu and secretary-general Datuk M Noor Azman Taib. Nga said that the session attended by over 300 stakeholders received 55 proposals and views from over 30 representatives of associations, professional bodies and community organisations, including the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association Malaysia (REHDA), National House Buyers Association, volunteer fire teams and Rukun Tetangga. "We will formulate all the input received to be submitted to the Ministry of Finance on Sept 4, to ensure Budget 2026 continues to benefit the people," he said. Nga said that KPKT will introduce over 10 new initiatives under Budget 2026, including focusing on public infrastructure projects with a target of 10,000 public facility projects to be implemented next year. 'Based on an excellent track record, last year, we completed 6,611 projects including parks, markets, food courts, hawker centres and public toilets. Therefore, we aim to double the allocation for BP1 (Federal Small Allocation) to at least RM500 million," he said.
