Oman, China explore deeper ties at Salalah forum
Organised under the theme 'Chinese Modernisation and Oman Vision 2040: Our Work and Proposals', the forum was a joint initiative of Al Roya newspaper, the Chinese Embassy in Oman and the Oman-China Friendship Association. It brought together officials, experts and specialists from both countries.
H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, inaugurated the forum and felicitated participants and speakers.
H E Dr Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary for Commerce and Industry at Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, described the forum as a 'unique opportunity to exchange expertise and explore promising investment areas that serve the development priorities of both countries.'
H E Lyu Jian, Ambassador of China to Oman, said relations between the two countries have remained strong for over 1,200 years, with diplomatic ties formally established in 1978. 'Our cooperation has been stable and fruitful, built on mutual respect and equality.'
He added that China is Oman's top trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching US$36.7bn in 2024. China is also among the top five foreign investors in Oman. 'Our collaboration includes the launch of the first Omani satellite, joint energy investments and training programmes that have benefited over 1,200 Omanis.'
The ambassador noted that trade between China and the GCC reached US$288bn in 2024, with Chinese investments increasing by more than 30% in the first half of 2025. He called for more cultural cooperation and the introduction of direct flights between Oman and China.
Dr Khalid Salim al Saidi, Chairman of Oman-China Friendship Association, said it plays a 'vital role in strengthening ties beyond formal meetings'. He added that its work now includes building cultural bridges and informal cooperation initiatives based on mutual values.
Naif Hamed Fadhil, Head of the Dhofar branch of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the forum is 'important for bringing business owners closer and enabling bilateral investment in energy, technology, industry, logistics and tourism'. He called for the development of sustainable and impactful cooperation models.
The forum featured discussions on four core themes: Chinese Modernisation and Oman Vision 2040, Energy Sector Cooperation, Innovation and Technology Partnerships, and Cultural and Humanitarian Exchange. It also included a photo exhibition in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy and B2B meetings between companies from the two countries.
More than 30 representatives from Omani and Chinese firms took part, with a dedicated exhibition showcasing Chinese businesses. The forum aimed to reinforce strategic ties and explore new collaboration areas aligned with Oman's development priorities, while drawing from China's experience in economic and social modernisation.

Over 400 participants attend Oman REFCO Esports Championship
Muscat: The Oman REFCO Esports Championship concluded on August 1, drawing more than 400 participants from governorates across the country and marking the largest event of its kind in Oman. Organised by Oman REFCO and Omani Gaming & Esports Committee in partnership with Active Oman, E-sports Arena and Oman Automobile Association, the two-day event represented a key step in empowering youth and advancing digital talent nationwide. US to require $15,000 bond for some tourists
Washington - The US State Department said Monday some visa applicants will soon be required to pay bonds of up to $15,000 to discourage visa overstays as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on migration. Starting later this month, the pilot program will require applicants from certain countries to pay a sum of "no less than $5,000" as collateral for the issuance of their visa. The funds will be returned if the applicant complies with all visa terms. If the applicant remains in the United States past the deadline, the funds will be forfeited. "Consular officers may require covered nonimmigrant visa applicants to post a bond of up to $15,000 as a condition of visa issuance," the agency said in a notice to be published Tuesday in the US Federal Register. The 12-month program would only affect foreign nationals from countries considered to have "high visa overstay rates" based on a 2023 Department of Homeland Security report, the notice said. Applicants will also require bond payments from countries "where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient," the notice added, as well as those who were granted citizenship without a residency requirement. "The pilot reinforces the Trump Administration's commitment to enforcing US immigration laws and safeguarding US national security," a State Department spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry. Neither the notice nor the spokesperson specified which countries would be impacted by the new rule. The program, which will begin on August 20, will apply to B-1 or B-2 non-immigrant visas, and those asked to pay bonds will have to enter and depart from the United States from a list of pre-selected airports. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump and his administration have cracked down on migration to the United States. The State Department justified the launch of the pilot program by calling it "a key pillar of the Trump Administration's foreign policy to protect the United States from the clear national security threat posed by visa overstays."

Majlis A' Shura discuss repercussions of suspension of job security benefit for laid-off workers
Muscat – The Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Shura Council held a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Younis al Mandhari, to address the implications of suspending the job security benefit previously granted to laid-off workers. The committee expressed concern over the social and economic hardships faced by affected citizens, emphasizing the urgent need to resume disbursement of the benefit provided by the Social Protection Fund. Members highlighted that many individuals have experienced a significant deterioration in living conditions, making it essential to restore the support to ensure psychological and social stability. In their recommendations, the committee called on relevant authorities to take swift, practical steps, including empowering local governorates and decentralizing employment-related decisions. This would allow for region-specific solutions tailored to local labor market needs and redundancy challenges. Members also stressed the importance of offering employment opportunities that align with the qualifications and professional experience of laid-off workers. They proposed the launch of requalification and reintegration programs that promote a dignified and secure return to the job market. To improve long-term planning, the committee recommended the creation of a comprehensive, up-to-date database of job seekers and laid-off individuals. Such a tool would help shape more effective national employment strategies and policies. Further proposals included reviewing or amending existing legislation to enhance workforce protections, reserving job vacancies in government and state-owned entities for laid-off nationals, and accelerating Omanisation by replacing expatriate-held positions with qualified Omani personnel. Raising the cost of hiring foreign labor in the private sector was also discussed as a way to encourage local recruitment. In conclusion, the committee called for a holistic, long-term national strategy to address layoffs, focused on tackling root causes rather than short-term fixes. They emphasised the importance of legal and administrative reforms and the establishment of a national action plan to ensure employment stability and social justice for all Omani citizens.
