Markets in wait-and-watch mode amid global crosswinds: Punita Kumar Sinha

Economic Times19 hours ago

Markets are stable due to the RBI cut and benign macro conditions. Global events like US-China trade talks and internal US economic softening are key factors. India faces mixed economic data, with positives like rate cuts and good monsoons balanced by concerns about valuations and geopolitics. Market momentum exists, but choppiness is expected. Valuations are neutral to high.

"People are taking a relook at markets given the RBI cut. So, for the moment things seem to be fairly stable and macro conditions are benign. But one never knows given the global situation what could come next," says Punita Kumar Sinha , Pacific Paradigm Advisors.Well, first of all, India stands in a good place because we have the least amount of risk compared to some of the other countries amongst the large economies, especially being on President Trump's radar for tariffs and some other issues, immigration, etc.So, I mean, the data is mixed. There are positives and then there are negatives. So, the positives, we are beginning to see for India is that obviously rate cuts and plenty of liquidity has been injected by the RBI, the monsoons are good which will help the rural economy, the trade talks are sort of not looking that harsh for India at the moment or at least it is not on the radar as much as some other countries, and the geopolitical situation seems to have calmed down, so that is on the positive front. On the negative side, economic data is still mixed. The economy still needs to show sign of further strengthening. The RBI rate cuts now mean that potentially since the stance is now neutral, that there may not be any further cuts or further liquidity injections for the remainder of the year and then, another negative is that geopolitics could become an issue again and the trade discussions could again come into the forefront for India as well. And the other negative is that valuations are now, after the markets have rallied the valuations are not that great once again. So, it is kind of a balance between the positives and negatives. And given that, the markets could be choppy, rangebound, but we could have some good months and maybe not so good months depending on data and news flow. So, I think the momentum is there right now. People are taking a relook at markets given the RBI cut. So, for the moment things seem to be fairly stable and macro conditions are benign. But one never knows given the global situation what could come next.Well, it is in no one's interest to have an adverse outcome. So, I am hopeful that there will be some negotiation that will be positive for both, otherwise the outcome could be negative and the markets are not pricing in a big negative outcome. The markets are pricing in a neutral to positive outcome, which is why the markets are being strong across the board, whether it is US, whether it is Chinese markets, Asian markets, emerging markets . So, I think that is the risk as well that the markets are not pricing in a bad scenario. No, I mean I think they are still on the high side because the markets have rallied but, of course, India has underperformed some of the other emerging markets, particularly Latin America and some of the other Asian countries and also India has underperformed Europe. So, relative valuations compared to some of these other markets has improved. But if you look at versus its own history, Indian market valuations are not cheap and we are still trading over 20 times multiples and while growth would start picking up particularly on the rural side with the rate cuts and a better monsoon, so there could be some better numbers coming on the denominator, but I still do not think that the valuations are that attractive relative to its own history, they are not cheap, I mean they are neutral to high.

Chinese Carmakers Agree to Standardize Supplier Payment Periods

(Bloomberg) -- Several of China's state-owned automakers have pledged to standardize bill payment periods for their suppliers to 60 days after authorities raised concerns about supply chain financing. At least three carmakers, including Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. and China FAW Group Co. issued similar statements on Tuesday saying their payment plans are aimed at promoting efficient capital flows across supply chains in the automotive industry. Chinese carmakers, embroiled in a domestic price war, have been seeking lower-cost components and delaying payments to suppliers by months, creating a form of quasi-debt financing. Regulators including the Ministry for Industry and Information Technology last week addressed the issue of supply chain financing with the heads of major electric vehicle manufacturers on concerns the price war was becoming unsustainable. Chinese authorities issued new rules in March to protect small and medium enterprises, stipulating that bills should be paid within 60 days and that large firms shouldn't force smaller businesses to accept non-cash payments such as promissory notes or use these methods to delay payments. The regulations will take effect in June. Supply chain financing is common in the auto industry. BYD Co., China's best-selling car brand, has a promissory note system called Dilian, or Dilink in English, that it uses as a form of payment to its suppliers and can be redeemed at a later time. The platform had issued 400 billion yuan ($55.7 billion) worth of notes as of May 2023, the last time that BYD disclosed such information. BYD took an average of 275 days to pay suppliers in 2023, Bloomberg compiled data show. A report by accounting consultancy GMT Research puts BYD's true net debt at closer to 323 billion yuan, compared with the 27.7 billion yuan listed on its books as of the end of June 2024, through delaying its payments to suppliers and other related financing. A riveting, action-packed year awaits Modi 3.0 on the diplomatic front

The first year of Modi 3.0 will be remembered most for Operation Sindoor, thrusting Pakistan back to the centrestage of Indian foreign policy. By striking terrorist infrastructure deep inside Pakistan, India not only imposed unprecedented costs upon Islamabad for its support to cross-border terrorism but also raised the stakes for the international community's indulgence of Pakistan's duplicity in addressing a core Indian concern. The year also saw milestones being delivered like the India-UK FTA and the India-EU end-of-2025 deadline set by both sides for a similar agreement that the EU has described as the largest deal of its kind anywhere in the world. PM Modi's visit to the US within a month of President Trump's return to the White House, along with the launch of negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement, was also one of the high points. There were other foreign policy pluses, none perhaps more significant than the breakthrough with China in the form of the successful settlement of the five-year-old border standoff. The thaw in the relationship after the Modi-Xi meeting in Oct in Russia saw India resuming bilateral visits to Beijing and agreeing on a host of measures to normalise ties. Among the highlights was the upgrade in ties with the Taliban with the first political contact in the form of external affairs minister S Jaishankar's talks with the acting Afghan foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. Modi also garnered international attention for his back-to-back visits to Russia and Ukraine, during which he stressed the importance of direct talks to end the war - something the two sides are engaged in currently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 고민 중이라면? 인천 시민이 주목한 33만원 시술 플란치과 더 알아보기 Undo However, many of these foreign policy hits remain an unfinished business and will test India's resolve in the days ahead. On Pakistan, the challenge will be to ensure the global community, particularly the UN Security Council where Pakistan is a member, shows understanding about the punitive terms India has set out in the 'new normal' against Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism. This will be critical in the event of another terrorist attack from across the LoC. The all-party delegations have made a beginning but there's more to be done, while being mindful of the risks of India-Pakistan re-hyphenation that such an exercise might entail. Managing the relationship with the US will be another pressing challenge in the second year of Modi 3.0. This has arisen unexpectedly from Trump's constant needling of India on bilateral trade and perhaps even more damaging utterances on the India-Pakistan conflict, like his use of the term mediation - a big taboo in Indian foreign policy lexicon - and his drawing an equivalence between India and Pakistan. India is hoping that not just the US but also its other Quad partners will be more liberal in their support for India on cross-border terrorism, like in the form of a joint statement when the foreign ministers and leaders meet this year. The third significant challenge in the next few months will be to decide whether it's time to reinforce the improvement in ties with Beijing by resuming direct air and normal visa services with and, more importantly, with a visit to the country by Modi for SCO summit. Despite China's ties with Pakistan acting as a deterrent, India has kept the door open for continued engagement. Modi has also shown interest in rebuilding ties with Canada by accepting his counterpart Mark Carney's delayed invitation for the G7 but this will be subject to Ottawa's handling of Khalistani separatists and also the probe into Nijjar murder that wrecked the relationship. Signs of improvement in Pakistan-Taliban ties and the proposal to expand CPEC into Afghanistan might pose a few problems too. All in all, a riveting, action-packed year is what awaits Modi 3.0.
