He Was Left by the Person He Trusted Most—Now Shelter Life Is Breaking Him

After being abandoned by the person he loved the most in the world, a fluffy husky named Funshine found himself at a local shelter in Nebraska, where his once "spunky, adventurous soul" now seems like a distant memory.
In a viral Facebook post shared on Thursday by the Central Nebraska Humane Society, a picture shows the pup lying on the ground in his kennel, taking a nap by the sun as nothing else seems to interest him anymore.
"Our sweet 'Funshine Bear' isn't shining quite like he used to," the caption reads. "He may not be one of our longest residents, but shelter life is wearing him down. This once spunky, adventurous soul now spends his days looking lost, uninterested even in the simple joys of a sunny walk or a favorite toy.
"It breaks our hearts to see the light dim in a dog who used to chase every moment with joy. Funshine never should've ended up here. He was abandoned by the person he trusted most—and waited patiently, day after day, for someone who never came back."
However, according to the shelter, not all hope is lost for him. Funshine still "believes in people," the shelter says; his eyes still soften when he sees a familiar face.
"He's been wonderful with kids and recently stole the show as the guest of honor at the Grand Island Area Farmers Market. Funshine doesn't always get along with other dogs, and he will need a cat-free home.
"But what he really needs is someone who sees past the kennel walls and recognizes the bright, loyal companion waiting on the other side," the shelter adds. "If you think you could be the one to bring the sunshine back into his life, come meet him. He's been waiting for you—and we promise, he hasn't given up hope."
A spokesperson for the shelter told Newsweek that Funshine Bear is a little over 5 years old, and weighs only about 65 pounds.
"When dogs are stressed or depressed in a shelter setting, sometimes it is difficult to keep weight on them which is the case for Funshine. Once he gets into a comfortable home life, he will put some weight back on, so it's good for potential adopters to understand he will weigh more, to get to his ideal weight," she added.
Because Funshine was abandoned by his owner, the shelter staff don't know much about his story, or about what he likes and dislikes or struggles with.
"We can tell he had some prior training, but what we are teaching him, he is picking up quickly. He is very smart. When he isn't feeling down like he is now, he loves walks where his nose can lead the way to exploring," the spokesperson said.
"He loves attention from people and will never turn down hugs and all of the face kisses he can get. He doesn't dislike all dogs; he's just kind of picky so he needs slow introductions with new dogs."
The Central Nebraska Humane Society said that, while he is safe at the shelter, and will stay there until he finds a new home, they are functioning well over capacity for both dogs and cats.

Almost 6 million homeless cats and dogs entered shelters across the country last year, and while most were adopted by new loving families, other weren't lucky enough to secure a new home.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) says that over 600,000 animals were euthanized in 2024 alone, 334,000 dogs and 273,000 cats, mostly for lack of space in shelter.
The post immediately drew the attention of social-media users across the platform, receiving over 2,200 likes and 271 comments.
One user, Stephanie Saylor, commented: "If you find a worthy adopter … ill pay half the adoption fee."
Judy Lee Kirchmann said: "Someone adopt him, please. Be his forever love."
Tris Rockwell added: "Oh no! That makes my heart hurt. He always had so much spunk and he just loves to give hugs. Someone please take him home and cuddle him back."

Paul Heyman Breaks Silence On Seth Rollins' Devastating Injury
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Paul Heyman has addressed the injury scare surrounding his client, Seth Rollins, which occurred at last weekend's Saturday Night's Main Event. In a new interview, Heyman downplayed the long-term severity of the situation while praising WWE's modern approach to handling injuries. Rollins suffered an apparent knee injury during his match against LA Knight on July 12th. The injury forced a last-second, unplanned change to the finish, with LA Knight picking up a surprise victory. Paul Heyman Downplays The "Big Deal" Speaking to SHAK Wrestling, Paul Heyman was asked about the status of Seth Rollins. The "Wise Man" seemed unconcerned, pointing to the fact that Rollins, as the current Mr. Money in the Bank, has plenty of time to recover. "Seth Rollins has until next June to cash in the Money in the Bank contract," Heyman said. "If his leg fell off in the ring, they would reattach it and he'd heal by next June. So until we're crashing into that deadline, I don't really see the big deal... I also kind of chuckle on the inside about how big of a deal was being made." A More Compassionate WWE Era Heyman used the situation to highlight what he sees as a major positive change in WWE's backstage culture under the new regime. He praised the company's modern medical protocols, which prioritize the long-term health of the talent. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 19: Paul Heyman (L) raises Seth Rollins' hand after his Triple Threat match victory over CM Punk and Roman Reigns during WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium on April 19, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. More"Pro wrestling was behind the times for many years. And you know the whole thing was if you get hurt, if you don't work, you don't get paid," Heyman explained (H/T to "I think it is a far more compassionate look for the longevity of the performer that we do have these protocols in place." He believes the quick action taken by officials during the match prevented a more serious outcome. He stated the protocol "enabled Seth Rollins to get out of the ring with whatever injury he sustained, instead of further aggravating that injury and making it 10 times worse." More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation A Troubling History For Seth Rollins The concern from fans is understandable given Seth Rollins' history with severe knee injuries. In 2015, a devastating tear of his ACL, MCL, and meniscus forced him to vacate the WWE Championship and miss WrestleMania. His history with knee problems makes any new injury to that area a major cause for worry. While there is still no official word on the severity of this latest injury, Heyman's comments suggest that, for now, the plan is for Rollins to heal and eventually use his Money in the Bank contract. Top AEW Star Expected To Take Time Off: Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Another top AEW star is expected to take time off from the company. Following a storyline write-off on this week's episode of Dynamite, a new report indicates that former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega will be absent from programming for an unknown period. This news comes as AEW is already dealing with a significant "injury bug," with other top stars like Adam Cole, Will Ospreay, and Samoa Joe also currently sidelined. Omega's potential absence would be another major blow to the company's main event scene. July 12, 2025 – Kazuchika Okada strikes Kenny Omega at AEW All In: Texas. July 12, 2025 – Kazuchika Okada strikes Kenny Omega at AEW All In: Texas. Ricky Havlik/AEW The Storyline Write-Off On the July 16th episode of AEW Dynamite, Omega's former manager and bitter rival, Don Callis, cut a promo addressing Omega's recent championship loss to Kazuchika Okada. During the segment, Callis repeatedly and callously referred to Kenny Omega as "dead," signaling a storyline reason for his absence. A subsequent report from Fightful Select confirmed that Omega is indeed expected to take time off. The report noted that the specific reason for his hiatus, and whether it will be a consecutive or sporadic absence, is not yet known. Omega was not present at the Dynamite or Collision tapings this week. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation This news is especially concerning given that Kenny Omega only recently returned from a career and life-threatening battle with diverticulitis. The illness, which is a severe inflammation of the digestive tract, kept him out of action for over seven months. He made his triumphant and emotional return to the ring in June of this year. Since his comeback, Omega has competed in ten matches. His return was seen as a massive boost for AEW, and he was immediately thrust back into the main event picture. This new, unexpected hiatus has fans worried, though it is unknown if it is related to his previous health issues. Another AEW Pillar Sidelined Kenny Omega is a foundational figure in AEW, serving as an Executive Vice President and its second-ever AEW World Champion. He is widely regarded as one of the best in-ring performers of his generation, with a legendary career in both AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. His absence adds to a growing list of top AEW talent currently on the shelf. The company is navigating the recent losses of Adam Cole (concussion), Will Ospreay (banged up), and Samoa Joe (promotional duties for Twisted Metal). With another of its biggest stars now out, AEW faces a significant creative challenge as it builds towards the fall season. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports

Dog Visits Vet, What Cat Siblings Do Once She's Home Goes Viral
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A German shepherd may be home safe after a vet's appointment, but her feline housemates aren't exactly rolling out the welcome mat. Racking up over 738,000 likes on TikTok (@romancedev), the video, posted on July 15, shows the dog sprawled out on the sofa, looking exhausted. But it is her cats' reactions that have caught the attention of internet users. One feline cautiously approaches for a sniff, while the other keeps a watchful distance, staring suspiciously from under a nearby chair. The scene ends with the more-cautious cat silently observing from the shadows—trying to figure out if this really is the same dog they knew before. As the caption puts it: "It's not her fault she smells different now." @romancedev Its not her fault she smells different now ♬ WTHELLY - Rob49 The clip may seem like classic feline drama, but animal behaviorists say there is more to it than meets the eye. The International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) says that cats can experience a phenomenon called nonrecognition aggression. This behavior often occurs when one feline from a multi-cat household returns home after being away—such as a visit to the vet or groomer—and is suddenly treated like a stranger by the cat that stayed behind. The reason? Scent. The IAABC notes that the returning feline's scent is often masked by unfamiliar smells such as disinfectant, alcohol, iodine, or anesthetic gas from the vet's office. This loss of a shared "group scent" causes the other cats to see the returning pet as an outsider—and sometimes even a threat. While this phenomenon is said to be unique to felines, one commenter under the video shared: "My dogs and cats do it!!! It's like parts concern, anger, and afraid." How To Help Pets Reunite Peacefully Stock image: A cat sniffs a dog on indoor tiles. Stock image: A cat sniffs a dog on indoor tiles. TikTok Reacts The video has since racked up over 158,000 likes and nearly 500 comments. "Cat under the table looking like is bro ok???????????" wrote one user, earning 29,500 likes. Another posted: "The one under the table was almost convinced they gave them the wrong dog back." And a third asked: "Genuinely want to know what smell the vet office is pumping out that every animal is ready to square up with their pet sibling or act like they're strangers."
