
Hotels add 'beauty' to spring promotions
As spring approaches, several hotels nationwide are unveiling exclusive collaborations with beauty brands, offering guests a range of seasonal promotions designed to enhance their stay. These include luxury beauty gifts and special cocktails inspired by the brands.
The Westin Josun Seoul has launched its spring package, "Spring Escape," which runs through June 30. Guests who book this package will receive a one-night stay in a deluxe room and a 500 milliliter bottle of "Luna" body lotion from the British luxury fragrance brand, Penhaligon's. Additionally, guests staying in suite rooms will receive a bottle of Chateau des Clans Whispering Angel wine and have access to the Westin Club's happy hour and breakfast offerings.
Rates for the package start at 496,100 won ($340.80).
In Jeju, Lotte Hotel Jeju is offering a "Beautiful Moment of Spring" package, available until April 30. This package includes a one-night stay, breakfast for two, a premium skincare set from the brand Thome valued at 430,000 won and a complimentary photo session.
Guests will be photographed by a local photographer, with one pocket-sized photo printed and framed. Additionally, those who book multiple nights can enjoy a special food offering at the hotel's poolside cafe, including dishes like tteokbokki and deep fried black pork dipped in sweet and sour sauce, along with two soft drinks.
Some hotels are also incorporating beauty-inspired cocktails into their offerings. At the top-floor bar, Marque d'Amour, in L'Escape, a special collaboration with the French niche fragrance brand Diptyque is offered. The promotion, available until April 16, includes a 30 ml bottle of Diptyque's "Do Son" eau de toilette, a bottle of sparkling wine and a selection of three special cocktails based on the scents of Diptyque's perfumes. The package, priced at 200,000 won, also includes a platter of assorted cheeses, charcuterie, fruits and canapes.
Finally, Moxy Seoul Insadong Marriott Hotel is collaborating with the K-beauty brand Bussi for a March promotion themed, 'XXLove: Sweet Love.' The partnership will feature a pop-up store, limited-edition beauty packages and a cherry-flavored cocktail inspired by Bussi's signature scent XXLove. The pop-up store, located on the 16th floor of the hotel, merges the hotel's modern atmosphere with Bussi's chic interpretation of love and spring.

'Largest Princess Diana auction' opens in Ireland
NEWBRIDGE, Ireland (Reuters) -- From colorful frocks and hats to handbags and shoes, items belonging to the late Princess Diana go under the hammer this month in what Julien's Auctions says is the largest collection of her fashion to go to auction. The live and online "Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection" sale will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, offering an array of fashion items Diana wore. "This is the largest Princess Diana auction because we have over 100 items from her amazing life and career ... keeping in mind Diana herself ... sold over 70 of her dresses ... back in 1997 to raise money for her charity," Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, told Reuters on Monday. He was speaking at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge in Ireland during a pre-sale exhibition. Among the highlights is a 1988 silk floral dress by Bellville Sassoon, dubbed the "caring dress" because Diana wore it several times on hospital visits, with a price estimate of $200,000-$300,000. A cream silk embroidered evening gown Catherine Walker designed for Diana's 1986 Gulf tour has a similar price tag, while a Bruce Oldfield two-piece yellow floral ensemble she wore for Royal Ascot in 1987 is estimated at $100,000-$200,000. Other sale items include a Dior handbag gifted to her by former French first lady Bernadette Chirac in 1995, a sketch of Diana's 1981 wedding dress with tulle fabric cut-offs from when she married then Prince Charles in 1981 and a peach hat she wore for her honeymoon send-off. The auction also includes pieces belonging to other British royals including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the queen mother. Nolan said Julien's Auctions had previously sold a dress belonging to Diana for $1.14 million. "People do consider these items as an asset class now, because if people own these items today, chances are in years to come they will sell them for more than what they pay for (at) auction," he said. Part of the proceeds from the sale of Diana's items will go to charity Muscular Dystrophy UK. The pre-sale exhibition in Newbridge will run until June 17.

Seoul Mediacity Biennale to embrace the mystical in media art
The 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, scheduled to kick off on Aug. 26, will bring together 49 artists and collectives under the theme of 'Seance: Technology of Spirit." The term 'seance,' derived from French, refers to an attempt to communicate with spirits. The 13th edition of the biennale, running through Nov. 23 at the Seoul Museum of Art, or SeMA, will be led by Anton Vidokle, artist and founder of e-flux; Hallie Ayres, art historian and curator; and Lukas Brasiskis, curator of video and film at e-flux. The biennale will explore the influence of mystical and spiritual experience on the development of modern and contemporary art. 'It's very significant that many artists have in recent years gravitated towards ways of understanding the world that might offer an alternative to the prevailing systems, which seem at present to be in crisis,' said the curators. Starting with the artistic practice of British artist Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884), who achieved her first mediumistic drawings after attending her first seance in 1859, the exhibition will encompass the influence of shamanism on video art founder Paik Nam-june and German Fluxus artist Joseph Beuys, as well as transcendental experiences depicted in the early experimental films of American artists Maya Deren and Jordan Belson. The biennale will also feature works by contemporary artists engaged with the diverse traditions and themes of the occult, enchantment and magic. The Seoul Mediacity Biennale, launched in 2000 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, has earned international recognition for its experimental engagement with contemporaneous changes within the media landscape of the city, redefining what media is and can be.

Interview: Korean adaptation of 'Carthage' draws steady support for universal themes
Intense whodunit asks how much society should intervene in people's lives For British playwright Chris Thompson, 'Carthage' holds a special place in his heart. It was his debut work, the first of his plays to be adapted into another language and an honest response to his 12 years of service as a social worker in London. Now, the third Korean-language production of "Carthage," staged by theater company Secret Base under the direction of Shin Ji-ho, is enjoying yet another sold-out run. "Carthage" is being staged at the Quad Theater in Seoul's Daehangno theater district through Sunday. In Korea for the first time to see a performance, Thompson described the experience of watching his own words unfold in another language as 'strange and surreal.' 'It hit me in a visceral way, rather than being about the language,' Thompson said in a postshow conversation with The Korea Herald last week. 'I wrote this play 10 years ago while I was still working as a social worker. So this play and the characters have lived in my heart for a very long time. I wanted to write something honest and responsible that reflected the world that I was working in.' 'Carthage' begins with the death of a teenager named Tommy, who was born in prison. The story jumps through time to unravel who is to blame: his mother, Annie? Marcus, the prison officer who was present at the time of his death? Or Sue, the social worker who cared for both Tommy and his mother? The open-stage design of the drama places the audience on all sides of the stage, evoking feelings of a jury in a courtroom, silently deliberating on guilt and responsibility. Despite the play's grounding in the UK's social care system, its popularity in Korea suggests the themes transcend borders. 'I think the structure of the story pulls people in because it's basically a whodunit,' Thompson said. 'We always want the easy answer, like in an Agatha Christie murder revelation, but it's not that simple.' And even though the play was written in a very UK-specific context, Thompson said he was trying to write something universal about guilt, blame and responsibility. 'I think people recognize the characters and the conflicts, the dynamics, the dilemmas that are going on.' The idea for the play came from a study Thompson read, which found that some juvenile offenders in prison would deliberately create situations in which they were restrained and held by prison officers because they were not receiving hugs, affection or natural intimacy from their families. Reflecting on his years in the field, Thompson admitted that the most honest response he could give about intervention by authorities was 'often more about wishing we had the courage to leave them alone and accept the risk.' "If I'm honest, would (children) have been better off if we had left them alone and not brought them into the system? Because the system that is designed to help can do more harm than good. The children in the UK, the ones that come out the other end, sometimes come out worse, even though we've tried to help them.' Emotional balance For director Shin, who brought the drama to Korea, it was the play's exploration of social structures, institutional systems and issues facing youth that drew him in. 'And what I focused on most was balancing the characters' positions — their professional standpoint and their personal, human one,' said Shin. 'If we approach them purely through their roles, they feel overly institutional. But if we lean too far into emotion, they become untethered from their professional identities, and we end up empathizing with them too much, losing a sense of critical distance. I was constantly trying to walk that middle line.' He also chose not to give the audience too many clues about Tommy's death. 'The entire play moves toward Tommy's death, but I wanted the audience to encounter fragments of events, just like we do in real life — when one incident occurs, we're often left to piece together meaning from scattered assumptions and speculation. I wanted to condense that chaos into something more focused.' He layered in tools like overlapping voice-overs and audio recalls that both expand the storytelling and subtly plant narrative hints. One of Shin's most intentional choices in this third run was to resist immersion. 'Most importantly, I didn't want the audience to get too emotionally absorbed. Just because something is portrayed realistically doesn't mean I want it invading people's own lives. I thought a lot about preventing that,' he explained. That is why the director added an unexpected video segment at the end, right after Tommy's death, that is seemingly irrelevant but very much on purpose. 'Well-made, polished theatrical worlds don't interest me much anymore. I wanted to twist it at the end and disrupt that illusion a little.' hwangdh@
