Amazon Is Going to Offer Fast Delivery in Rural Areas. Should Dollar General Investors Be Worried?

Globe and Mail7 hours ago
Targeting rural areas has enabled Dollar General (NYSE: DG) to generate solid growth for years. Going into markets big-box retailers avoided has allowed it to be the one-stop shop for consumers in those areas.
But what if shoppers had a different option to consider for low-priced consumer goods? That could soon be a reality as e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is looking to offer fast delivery options to many rural markets across the country.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More »
Amazon to triple its delivery network by next year
Online shopping is not a new phenomenon or threat to Dollar General by any means. Rural shoppers can shop for goods online just like anyone else -- but delivery may take longer. If you need something right away, buying online is not going to be a realistic option in those cases, which is why Dollar General has been able to succeed even amid a flurry of online shopping options.
But Amazon isn't just planning to offer delivery in more areas next year, it's going to offer same-day and next-day delivery to 4,000 small cities, towns, and communities. This means that in some rural communities, customers could receive deliveries within hours. That's the kind of competition Dollar General hasn't had to worry about from online marketplaces. And this is why the Amazon threat is a considerable one.
Amazon is also utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to help predict which items it needs to stock in specific communities, which can better position the company for success as it expands into small towns.
Is Dollar General in trouble?
Dollar General offers same-day delivery to its customers, so it won't exactly be caught flat-footed with Amazon's latest expansion plans. But it's now facing a mammoth competitor in Amazon, which could conceivably take market share.
The dollar store retailer may lose sales and it may need to become more aggressive in price, which would cut into its already thin margins.
DG Profit Margin data by YCharts
Dollar General has already been struggling with declining margins in recent years, and now, potentially heightened competition could exacerbate the current situation.
Amazon is investing billions to build its network in a fairly short time frame and that isn't going to be easy for Dollar General to compete with. With Amazon's attention to detail and AI-powered analytics, odds are it's going to go after the most profitable and lucrative rural markets, which could hit Dollar General the hardest. That's why I definitely think the retail stock could be in deep trouble in the future.
I'd steer clear of Dollar General stock
Dollar General's core customer has been struggling to even buy the bare essentials of late. And while higher-income shoppers are spending more at Dollar General in light of worsening economic conditions, the company's growth prospects don't look great in the near term. For the current fiscal year (which ends in January), Dollar General is anticipating comparable sales growth between 1.5% and 2.5%.
And now, thanks to Amazon, even its long-term growth prospects may not be all that strong.
There isn't much room for error in Dollar General's operations given its thin margins. And the business could feel the squeeze once Amazon starts rolling out faster delivery options to rural areas. It introduces a new risk for an already risky stock in Dollar General. I don't like its odds of success in competing against Amazon, which is why I'd avoid Dollar General stock as its fundamentals could get even worse in the years ahead.

The growth stock bulls are charging. 3 Red Hot Growth Stocks for the Second Half 1. Palo Alto Networks, Inc. ( PANW ) Palo Alto Networks is a global cybersecurity company. It's a large cap company with a market cap of $133.7 billion. Earnings rose 27.9% in fiscal 2024 and are expected to jump another 15.1% in fiscal 2025. Palo Alto Networks has a PEG ratio, which measures the price-to-earnings divided by the growth, of 3.0. A PEG ratio under 1.0 indicates value. A PEG ratio over 5 means a company is expensive. Palo Alto Networks is in the middle. Not too expensive but not a value either. Should a cybersecurity company like Palo Alto Networks be on your watch list in the second half? 2. Palantir Technologies ( PLTR ) Palantir is an AI-driven software company with a market cap of $308 billion. It has been one of the hottest stocks of 2025, gaining 75% year-to-date. Should investors ride the Palantir momentum in the second half of the year? 3. Broadcom Inc. ( AVGO ) Broadcom is a $1.2 trillion dollar semiconductor company. In 2024, it grew earnings by 15.4%. But in 2025, analysts believe it will step it up a notch, with earnings expected to jump 36.3%. Shares of Broadcom are up 16.3% year-to-date and it is hitting new all-time highs. Compared to other red-hot technology companies, Broadcom has an attractive PEG ratio of just 1.6. That's almost cheap. Is Broadcom a cheaper way to play the AI Revolution? Plug Power Eyes Expansion in Green Energy Sector: Can It Deliver Growth?

Plug Power Inc. PLUG has been plagued with a high cash burn rate and negative gross margins over the past several quarters. Decline in revenues from the sales of hydrogen equipment and related infrastructure has been weighing on its performance. The company has been subject to lower sales of GenDrive units, GenSure stationary backup power units, cryogenic storage equipment and liquefiers. Despite this, PLUG has been considering to scale up its business and invest in hydrogen plants, given the long-term growth potential of the green hydrogen energy market. Going by some estimates the green hydrogen energy market is expected to grow to $30 billion by 2030. PLUG looks forward to capitalize on the opportunity with increased green hydrogen production at its new plant in Georgia, as well as a new joint venture with chemical products company, Olin Corporation OLN in Louisiana. In January 2025, Plug Power also secured a loan guarantee worth $1.66 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the construction of six green hydrogen production facilities. This marks a significant step in the expansion of its domestic manufacturing and hydrogen production capabilities. Also, the Senate's revision of the Trump administration's proposed tax bill is expected to offer two-year tax credit extensions for the hydrogen industry. This is likely to help Plug Power remain solvent as it considers scaling up its business. Although, the ongoing challenges, including negative gross margins and cash outflows, are likely to affect PLUG's near-term performance, its investments in the lucrative green hydrogen market and the Quantum Leap project are likely to be beneficial in the long run. Growth Investments in Clean Energy Space from PLUG's Peers Among Plug Power's major peers, Bloom Energy Corporation BE is poised to benefit from its expanding domestic and international commercial capability. In February 2025, Bloom Energy announced an expansion of its longstanding relationship with Equinix. Its fuel cells allow Equinix to generate on-site power at its data centers more sustainably than typical grid-delivered energy. Also, Bloom Energy's fuel cell projects with SK ecoplant in South Korea have significantly contributed to its performance in the past several quarters. Its another peer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. FCEL, remains focused on investing in the development and commercialization of its solid oxide fuel cell platform. This includes strategic collaborations that will allow FuelCell Energy to deploy the technology in energy, hydrogen generation and emissions reduction projects. FuelCell Energy continues to deploy its mature carbonate fuel cell systems, which generate clean electricity, heat and hydrogen, and support carbon capture. The Zacks Rundown for PLUG Shares of Plug Power have gained 14.7% in the past three months compared with the industry 's growth of 48.7%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research From a valuation standpoint, Plug Power is trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of a negative 2.83X against the industry average of 20.88X. PLUG carries a Value Score of F. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for PLUG's bottom line for 2025 has been stable in the past 60 days.
