Political row erupts over Mumbai local train tragedy: ‘Rail mantri has become reel mantri'
A political row erupted over the Mumbra train mishap that led to the falling of eight passengers from a crowded local trains on Monday. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray came down heavily on Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw amid chaos over the death of four passengers in the incident, and labelled him as "reel mantri".
Aaditya Thackeray said the Mumbra railway mishap was the responsibility of the railway department and the minister. However, Thackeray added that the minister was busy making reels instead of taking responsibility.
"Rail mantri has become a 'reel mantri'. There have been multiple terrible train accidents in the last two to three years, but no one is coming forward to claim any responsibility. This is solely the responsibility of the railway department and the railway minister. Sadly, he is busy making funny speeches in comic voices and reels but not coming forward to take responsibility," Thackeray said.
Thackeray also said that despite people demanding his resignation on multiple occasions, he carried on with his post. "People of India have demanded his resignation multiple times, but he has no shame. He carries on," Thackeray, Shiv Sena UBT MLA from Worli, told reporters in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief, Raj Thackeray criticised the Mahayuti-led state government of only focusing on elections instead of real issues of the people.
"The train accident that happened in Mumbai today is unfortunate. Many passengers died in this accident, but similar incidents are happening in Mumbai every day. Passengers are getting injured in Mumbai every day and yet no one is doing anything to help," the MNS chief said during a press conference on Monday.
"Our entire focus is only on the elections and campaigning. Will Raj Thackeray-Uddhav Thackeray form an alliance? More important than this question are how travel is going in Mumbai today, how people are living in the cities and in the state as a whole," he added.
As many as 13 people were injured after they fell from an excessively crowded train at Mumbra railway station in Thane district, Maharashtra, on Monday. Four people died in the incident, a Railways official said on Monday.
According to officials, the incident happened when passengers travelling on the footboard on a local train from Kasara and similarly those on a train going towards CSMT, collided with each other and fell.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Monday that he had spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about the Mumbra train accident. He said that steps would be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.
"I am confident that the injured will recover... I have spoken to our Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw... Work is being done to ensure that such an accident does not happen again... Certainly, the Railways is taking this accident very seriously," Shinde said.

Expressing his gratitude for the BJP-led Centre's support for Odisha, Majhi further said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Odisha on June 20. Listing some major initiatives, he said on June 12 last year, the state cabinet took four landmark decisions aimed at people-centric governance: opening all four gates of Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri for devotees; launching the Subhadra Yojana for women empowerment; establishing a Rs 500 crore corpus fund for the temple's development; and providing an Rs 800 bonus per quintal for paddy to farmers. He added that around 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis' have been empowered through targeted women-centric schemes, fulfilling the government's vision of self-reliant rural households. Highlighting education as a major focus, the chief minister said the launch of 'Godavarish Mishra Adarsh Vidyalaya' in each panchayat and the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) will revolutionise teaching and learning. 'WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE' Former CM Naveen Patnaik, however, slammed the BJP government accusing it of focusing on long speeches and advertisements rather than real development. During the launch of the 'Jana Jagaran Abhiyan' at Sankha Bhawan, he questioned the state government's achievements. 'They call it a people's government. But where are the people? Long speeches and big advertisements alone cannot bring development," Patnaik said. Patnaik said during the BJD's tenure, 90 per cent of the state's population benefited from the 'Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana'. 'The current Ayushman Bharat scheme fails to provide medicine or free hospital treatment. Thousands, including mothers, the elderly, cancer patients, and children, are facing harassment," he said. He alleged that the health system has collapsed, with posts of chief district medical officer lying vacant in 19 out of 30 districts. 'This is the so-called success of the current government," he said. Patnaik further claimed that 'Mission Shakti' brought glory to the state across India, but the present government has weakened this movement in a year. He noted that in 2000, the BJD had inherited a state with a loan burden of Rs 18,000 crore, and the government was running on overdraft. 'By 2024, the BJD left a treasury surplus of Rs 45,000 crore. The current government is now running on record loans," he added. He alleged that farmers are being exploited by millers while irrigation projects, which reached record high under the BJD, have been halted by the current regime.

Mau court to hear Ansari plea on Jun 21
1 2 Varanasi: The court of ADJ (MP-MLA) on Tuesday fixed Jun 21 as next date for hearing the appeal of disqualified MLA Abbas Ansari against his sentencing in the hate speech case by chief judicial magistrate (MP-MLA) court. The awarding of a two-year imprisonment by the CJM (MP-MLA) court on May 31 led to termination of Abbas's membership from state assembly. Ansari's advocate, Daroga Singh, said with beginning of the hearing before ADJ (MP-MLA) Rajiv Vatsa, district govt council (criminal) received copy of the appeal and sought time to file objection, after which, court fixed Jun 21 as next date for hearing, he added. Ansari was sentenced in a case lodged against him on Mar 4, 2022, after his speech delivered at a meeting in the Paharpur area on Mar 3, 2022, went viral on social media. While contesting the 2022 assembly polls from Mau Sadar seat as Samajwadi Party-Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party alliance candidate, Ansari, in his Paharpur speech on Mar 3, 2022, had said, "After formation of SP-led govt, officials would have to give 'hisab-kitab' (account) of their work of the past regime before getting transferred." Ansari won the election, but went behind bars following his arrest by the Prayagraj unit of enforcement directorate in a money laundering case in Feb 2023. He came out of jail in Mar. With completion of hearing in the 2022 hate speech case at the CJM (MP-MLA) court, Ansari was awarded two years imprisonment, after which he lost membership of the assembly. Against the CJM court's decision, Ansari moved his appeal before the sessions court on Monday. The session court transferred the case to the court of ADJ (MP-MLA) Rajiv Vats, where the initial hearing took place on Tuesday.
