Education Ministry to take stern action over upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident in PD school
Its Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the incident was a serious issue, as all parties had been repeatedly reminded of the importance and sensitivity of the national flag.
"We are currently awaiting the result of the full investigation. I want to stress that once we receive the complete report, we will take stern action.
"The Education Ministry has repeatedly reminded everyone about the sensitivity, responsibility, and commitment involved in displaying the Jalur Gemilang.
"Incidents like this should not have happened," she told reporters after presenting the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) to Form Six Semester One students for the 2025 session in Kelantan at the Educational Technology Resource Sector in Pengkalan Chepa, here on Sunday (Aug 3)
She said her ministry is taking a very strict stance on any offence involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, adding that the government do not want the spirit of the National Day celebration to be marred by such incidents.
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua in Port Dickson on Sunday issued a public apology over the upside-down display of the Jalur Gemilang at its premises on Friday.
The school board, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), and the school administration, in a joint statement, expressed deep regret over the incident, which they described as an unintentional mistake.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Aug 1 when a school worker mistakenly installed one of the flags upside down.
Meanwhile, commenting on the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Fadhlina stressed that the Education Ministry was committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation process.
"We assure that the investigation into this case will be carried out without delay. This case is our priority.
"I wish to stress once again that no one will be shielded. We will take all necessary actions, based entirely on the results of the investigation,' she said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the investigation into the death of Zara Qairina must be conducted thoroughly and transparently.
The Prime Minister was reported as saying that he had discussed the matter with Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure a swift and thorough investigation.
Zara Qairina, 13, was believed to have fallen from the third floor and was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, at 4am on July 16.
She was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on July 17. The student's death quickly went viral, sparking widespread public reaction on social media.

Review 25km ‘straight-line' travel allowance for Sabah teachers, says union
The union said several teachers in Sabah were forced to pay back the travel allowances they had received. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The education ministry and public services department have been urged to review the implementation of a new 25km 'straight-line' travel allowance rule for teachers in Sabah. The allowance for teachers travelling from their home to their schools is capped at a travel distance of 25km, measured as a straight line on a map rather than the actual distance covered by road. The Sabah government teachers' union (KGKS) said this rule cannot be implemented rigidly in Sabah given the state's hilly terrain and lack of infrastructure, like roads. KGKS president Gundohing Murkam Hussien cited the example of teachers working at SK Penimbawan Tuaran, which can be reached by boat or road, The Borneo Post reported. 'The first way is by boat along the river, which takes between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on weather conditions. The second is to use a car and drive for 78km. 'This means that strictly enforcing the 25km requirement is not appropriate. After considering the views of all KGKS members, the union has agreed to appeal to the ministry to review this issue,' he said. Gundohing said several teachers under KGKS were taking home lower salaries now because of this rule. Previously, they were given the travel allowance after it had been verified by the district education office. Gundohing also said some teachers were ordered to repay the allowances they had 'wrongly' received, forcing a few of them to apply for bank loans or sell their cars to pay off the amount. 'Of course, the teachers involved have been badly affected, leading to a decrease in their enthusiasm for work. 'All those involved in the process (of approving the allowances for the teachers) should by right be held responsible and share the cost of these claims,' he said.

Port Dickson school apologises for upside down Jalur Gemilang

(Facebook pic) SEREMBAN : SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson has apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang flag upside down at the school last Friday. The school, in a joint statement with the school board and parents-teachers association (PIBG), expressed regret for the incident, attributing it to staff oversight, Bernama reported. 'The incident occurred on the afternoon of Aug 1, when a school employee was installing national flags before the end of the workday. 'Due to carelessness, one of the flags was hoisted upside down,' it was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the school's Facebook page. The school said it was alerted about the error at around 5pm and immediately rectified it, acknowledging public concern following the circulation of photos of the flag on social media. SJKC Chung Hua said it remains committed to respecting national symbols and will improve internal oversight to avoid future incidents. Meanwhile, education minister Fadhlina Sedek said that stern action will be taken against the school after a full investigation is completed and the report is submitted to the ministry, BuletinTV3 reported. 'We are currently awaiting the full investigation, and I want to emphasise that once we receive the report, action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Fadhlina said that her ministry has repeatedly reminded all parties about this issue, and the same problem should not have happened again. 'I constantly stress the importance of sensitivity, responsibility, and commitment when it comes to the Jalur Gemilang, especially as we approach National Day. This mistake should not have occurred,' she said after an event in Kota Bharu today, according to BuletinTV3.
