Detractors slam PMX's no-brainer 'electricity tariff hike with cheaper electric bill for majority rakyat'
This came about as they reacted critically to a Facebook video of PMX reiterating that the hike which came into effect on July 1 is only intended for highly profitable industries during his monthly meeting with staff of the Prime Minister's Department yesterday (July 21).
'There're those trying to spread lies and false narratives that the rakyat are burdened by the restructuring of electricity tariffs. Yes, tariffs have increased but electricity bills have decreased for majority of the rakyat,' asserted PMX who is also the Finance Minister.
'The reality is that 85% of consumers are exempted while the overall electricity cost has decreased by 19% from 55.95 sen/kWh to 45.40 sen/kWh.'
As PMX urged the entire civil service machinery and related agencies to work together to strengthen the explanation of government policies so that 'real facts don't continue to be drowned by slander and distortion', some cheeky commenters remarked that 'only Walanon (slang for PMX's loyalists) would believe PMX's fairy tales'.
Others went on to label him as 'a liar the moment he opens his mouth' while a few found PMX's justification as 'not making sense no matter how one looks at it'.
This is when many sensible commenters stepped in to school PMX that it is simple logic that 'when electricity tariff for industry goes up, production cost will have to rise in tandem' with the commoners having to bear the brunt of pricier goods and services at the end of the day.
'Can you stop confusing the rakyat that 'when tariffs go up, bills come down?'.' lambasted a commenter with a seemingly constructive argument.
'Yes, tariffs go up for big industries. But those industries are the ones that provide basic consumer needs – food, drinks, factories, logistics. When their electricity costs go up, the prices of goods go up. In the end, it's the people who end up paying more.'
Continued the commenter: 'So, what's the point of a household electricity bill going down by RM2 if the cost of putting food on the table goes up by RM50?
'Don't hide behind the statistic '85% of consumers are exempted' if the chain effect remains that it'll burn a hole in the people's pocket.
'Don't spin if you truly want to help the rakyat … Economic facts cannot be manipulated like political slogans.'
Many echoed a similar sentiment with many furious commenters hit out at PMX for treating them as fools.
Well, one commenter wondered if the Madani government is able to mobilise its price check enforcement squad from the Domestic Trade and Living Costs Ministry to go from one factory to another nationwide to curb profiteering or to ensure there is no cost pass down of electricity tariff hike to consumers. – July 22, 2025

AI will reshape Malaysia's job market, says Human Resources Minister
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. – Bernama GEORGE TOWN: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will reshape Malaysia's job market and create thousands of new opportunities, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. He said AI would not replace workers but instead create new roles and redefine existing ones in the country's job landscape. "We have to move on from what I call 'worry to strategy'. "The way forward is to ensure that our workers are equipped with the right skills to adapt to the changes in current and future economic trends. "As Malaysia accelerates its transition into a digital economy, people should shed the fear that AI will lead to widespread job losses," he told reporters after launching the 52nd ARTDO International conference held at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel in George Town on Monday (July 28). Sim was referring to a study commissioned by his ministry on the impact of AI and digitalisation in Malaysia, which revealed that 600,000 existing jobs are "at risk". He said the evidence shows that AI would transform jobs, not eliminate them. "Those who adapt and upskill will find more opportunities, not fewer," he said. Sim said a national labour market study by his ministry revealed that up to 60% of employers across 10 key economic sectors expect AI to lead to job creation, especially in roles needing advanced digital skills. "The study, which included extensive inputs from industry stakeholders, is now sharing national policy on workforce readiness. "AI is changing how we work, not eliminating the need for work. "The question is not whether AI will take over, but whether we are preparing Malaysians to work with AI," he said. When asked by the press to elaborate on the new job opportunities created by AI, Sim said new roles like "prompt engineers" is an emerging opportunity. "We still need someone to input data into the AI and someone still needs to check the feedback produced by AI. "The ministry is actively responding to these changes by expanding training and upskilling initiatives through platforms such as MyMahir, a national skills-matching portal," he said. He said under the ministry's initiative, over 33 government-run industrial training institutes and various private providers were now offering AI and digital literacy courses. "These courses are aimed at equipping the workforce with relevant competencies in an increasingly automated landscape. "With the right upskilling, workers can transition into higher-value roles rather than being displaced. "AI literacy must become mainstream. Not everyone will become an AI engineer, but basic familiarity with how AI works will soon be essential across nearly every profession," he said. Sim said his ministry is working to integrate AI ethics and governance into public awareness, recognising that responsible deployment was just as important as technical know-how. "During the recent National Training Week, between 40% and 50% of offerings had AI components, including modules on ethical usage, data protection and digital responsibility. "We want Malaysians to not only use AI but to use it responsibly. "Understanding the social, legal and moral implications of AI is a national priority. "We are building not just a skilled workforce, but a trusted digital society," he said.

Abim: Ceasefire shows Malaysia's strength in conflict mediation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement under Malaysia's leadership as Asean chair. In a statement today, Abim extended its highest commendation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his role in brokering the deal, which takes effect at midnight. The ceasefire is expected to de-escalate rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, which have already led to casualties and threatened regional stability. The ceasefire was announced following a special meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, hosted by Anwar at Kompleks Seri Perdana in Putrajaya. Abim's president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said the success reaffirmed Asean's relevance as a regional conflict resolution platform and underscored Malaysia's ability to unite member states with the backing of global powers such as the United States and China, who co-sponsored the talks. "Abim applauds Malaysia's proactive role in restoring regional stability through principled, inclusive, and effective diplomatic engagement," he said. Abim urged these powers to continue supporting Asean's peace-first approach and to avoid exploiting regional tensions for strategic gain. "It also called for respect for regional leadership and efforts to strengthen local capacity in resolving disputes with sovereignty and dignity," he said in a statement. The group urged all parties to honour the ceasefire and halt any further acts of armed provocation. It also proposed the formation of an independent and neutral Asean-led monitoring team to ensure smooth implementation of the truce. "As a show of regional solidarity, Asean humanitarian aid must be delivered urgently to all affected communities, particularly displaced families and those who have lost loved ones or homes in the conflict." Abim appealed to the people of both countries, including social media users, to refrain from spreading hate speech, provocation or unfounded allegations that could undermine efforts towards peace. As part of its ongoing commitment to peacebuilding, Abim said it would continue working with civil society networks across the region to promote dialogue, assist victims of conflict, and ensure that the voices of ordinary people are included in peace efforts. The group also proposed the formation of an Asean Civil Society Conference for Regional Peace and an Asean Peace Education Programme, aimed at youth and communities in border areas.
