Period drama dubbed 'magnificent slop' finally streams all 8 episodes
The show, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, immerses viewers in the upper echelons of New York society at the turn of the 19th century, where wealth, status and scandal ruled supreme.
The Emmy-nominated series has had a rocky time since it was first announced in 2012. Almost eight years later, it had to shut down production just days before filming the first season when the pandemic started.
Then, in 2024, one of the lead stars Carrie Coon (The White Lotus) admitted there was a strong sense that the HBO show may not even return at all – ultimately she credited the fans with saving the show.
Reflecting on the time before season two, the actor told Deadline: 'We were on the bubble. We really didn't think we were going to come back. Our options had lapsed. It looked very unlikely, but it was the streaming.
'It was the number of people watching the show and loving the show.'
Then, in February 2025, she reiterated that the show had been in perilous waters. 'The gays saved it,' Coon joked with Entertainment Tonight. 'Thank you, right now, you saved it. We would not have a season three without you.'
After a one-and-a-half-year wait, fans finally sank their teeth into a brand new season and, with its rejuvented success, can look forward to a confirmed fourth season as well.
As usual, we will see tensions boil as old and new money clash with Coon's character Bertha returning alongside Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga.
The synopsis for the third season reads: 'Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionise the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first.
'Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.'
Aka… salacious drama, what's not to love?
The eighth and final episode landed on Sunday night, with viewers who have been holding out until the end finally switch their brains off and binge all the episodes.
And, you're in for a wild ride.
'It's slop, but it's magnificent slop,' Han T wrote in a five-star review for Rotten Tomatoes.
'This show continues to get stronger with each season. Aside from the excellent writing, the show's authenticity to the time period through production design, sets, and costumes is a nice touch. Many plot seeds that were planted before finally come to fruition,' Eddie S shared.
'The Gilded Age writers' room after writing line after line of impeccable dialogue for every single actor in today's episode… Absolute masterclass,' X user ShreyaPahwa wrote.
'Just finished the episode — it was so intense and uncomfortable. Some were happy, some were heartbroken. Such a powerful start. Now I can't wait for the next one. Every single scene had me hooked!' jxsecrett said.
'The Season 3 premiere of The Gilded Age was everything I could've hoped for. The emotions, the one-liners, the setup—all of it. We're in for such a ride for the next seven weeks,' Gissane Sophia added.
'The Gilded Age is back and it's still amazing,' Grumpyduck declared.
'The Gilded Age is truly terrific. Egos grow & power shifts in 1880s New York high society,' Anthony Shannon echoed.
The new season had already raked in rave reviews ahead of its premiere.
Variety has praised it as the 'best season yet'.
'The Gilded Age no longer feels torn between ogling the past and honouring its flaws. Three seasons in, it's on firmer footing than ever,' the review continued.
Roger Egbert said the new season 'dazzles and delights', and Slate said the 'new season is peppered with twists and scandal, heartbreak and horror – and, of course, more extravagant hats than Churchill Downs has ever seen.'
For those still needing to catch up, there are plenty of glowing reviews of seasons past from fans as well.
'Awesome interweaving of real-life events and characters make this show exceptional and the acting is stellar. The most sumptuous costumes and sets I have ever seen top it off; it is a veritable feast for the eyes,' Google reviews user Fleur Purdeu said.
'If you're a fan of Downton Abbey, Selfridges, or Poldark then this is absolutely a must-see. One of my favorite things about this show is the world-building and how it offers an intricately detailed glimpse into a period of American history that seems long forgotten, yet was an undeniably defining turning point in society,' Michael Swenson added. 'This show has a great build-up and gets so juicy!!' Angel Russell teased.
Although some have also called it 'amateurish' and 'predicatable' so be warned that this may not be to everyone's taste.
The Gilded Age seasons one, two and three are available to stream in full on Sky and NOW.

Beyoncé wins first Emmy, for 'Beyoncé Bowl' halftime show
Beyoncé has an Emmy to go with her 35 Grammys. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, her legal name, was listed as one of a half dozen people on a team that won outstanding costumes for a variety, nonfiction or reality show for "Beyoncé Bowl,' her Western-themed halftime show on Netflix's Christmas NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. The show in her hometown of Houston brought the live debut of songs from her 'Cowboy Carter' album. The special Emmy is Beyoncé's first. She has been nominated for 10 others without a victory. And it takes her halfway to an EGOT with her 35 Grammys. She still needs a Tony and an Oscar to complete the quartet. The award was among a handful of so-called juried Emmys announced Tuesday that are determined outside the regular voting process and given out by committees, with no official nominees. They are usually highly technical — several involve individual elements of the animation process — and rarely go to famous names. They are announced in advance and handed out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony next month. Beyoncé is also nominated for best variety special as a producer of 'Beyoncé Bowl" and for best direction of a variety special. Her husband, Jay-Z, is competing against her as an executive producer of Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show.

Kristin Davis reveals Sarah Jessica Parker confronted her about eating disorder and 'starving' herself on set
Kristin Davis is opening up about the intense body image pressures she faced while filming HBO's Sex and the City. On the latest episode of her Are You a Charlotte? podcast, the actress, 60, reflected on navigating criticism about her appearance during the show's 1998–2004 run. She admitted to having what she called a 'thinness issue' at the height of the series' success. 'There were times when Sarah Jessica would be like, "You have body dysmorphia." And I'd be like, I don't think I do because the world is literally telling me daily that I am pear shaped,' Davis said. 'Like so much to the point where, like, you can't think straight.' The Emmy nominee said the criticism led to unhealthy habits. 'But then you also have disordered eating. You're starving yourself,' she shared, recalling that she once fainted in a parking lot due to 'some crazy diet' she was on. Davis went on to explain that her self-esteem, at the time, was also derailed by back-handed compliments from fans out in public. 'There was a good number of years when… people would see me on the street and they would say, "Oh, but you're not fat." And I know they didn't mean anything bad. They mean it as a compliment, right? But it's because I'm standing next to Sarah Jessica. Or, "You're prettier in person." And I'm just like, well, okay.' While Davis is actually a few inches taller than her co-star — 5'6' compared to Parker's 5'3' — she alluded that the comparisons had nothing to do with height and everything to do with how their bodies were perceived on screen. 'There's like a weird cynicism about our industry and about us that then permeates the thinking,' she concluded. In 2023, Davis confessed that it is difficult being 'confronted with' her 'younger self at all times.' 'It's a challenge to remember that you don't have to look like that. The internet wants you to — but they also don't want you to. They're very conflicted,' she told The Telegraph. She also reflected on how she has done fillers that have looked 'good' and some that haven't over the years. 'I've had to get them dissolved and I've been ridiculed relentlessly. And I have shed tears about it. It's very stressful,' Davis stated. The actress also noted that 'people personally blame' performers 'when it goes wrong' versus 'the doctor who did the work.' 'No one told me it didn't look good for the longest time,' she added. 'But, luckily I do have good friends, who did say eventually. The thing is you don't smile at yourself in the mirror. Who smiles at themselves in the mirror? Crazy people.' Since wrapping Sex and the City and, more recently, its spinoff And Just Like That, after three seasons, Davis has remained close friends with Parker. In February, Davis revealed Parker 'was going to put me on a dating app.' 'Dating's tough as a single mom. My friends feel that I should be dating, because life is short,' she explained. 'I'm like, "Sarah Jessica, I will kill you.' I was like, 'Do not!"' Despite Park's attempt to make a profile for her, the star shut down the idea. 'I just don't meet that many people, I guess. And I'm super focused on the kids and it's hard to date with the kids. I've tried. I mean, it's tough,' she said. 'It's not like I'm not open to it. I just don't, I'm not actively pursuing it. Let's put it that way. But you kind of, at some point, I guess you have to do [it].' Davis adopted her daughter, Gemma Rose, in 2011, and son Wilson, in 2018. While actively putting herself out there, the Deadly Illusions alum admitted 'it never went well.' Due to her Southern upbringing in South Carolina, Davis said she was 'brought up to be kind of aggressively nice' and that has given some men the wrong idea. 'People don't understand that and they're confused,' she said. 'Like, why is this person being so nice to me? And in dating, that can be tough because then they think it's a go and you're just like, "No, what gave you that impression?"'
