AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane is refusing to be drawn into talk of an 'easier' assignment when his side face Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria on Tuesday, despite the champions dropping points on the opening day.
Usuthu will travel to Loftus Versfeld in high spirits after beginning their Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Orbit College at the Princess Magogo Stadium. Zwane's men controlled the match from start to finish but needed a first-half own goal from Sekhoane Moerane to seal the three points.
Sundowns, meanwhile, were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Chippa United in Gqeberha — a result that raised eyebrows given the Brazilians' dominance in recent seasons.
The defending champions are also navigating uncertainty, with key players Lucas Ribeiro, Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau all linked with possible moves before the transfer window closes.
Zwane has cautioned against reading too much into that slow start or the speculation surrounding their squad.
'We can't think because they drew their first game that perhaps it's going to be an easier game,' Zwane said.
'It's going to be a very difficult season for everyone. There will be fewer underdogs this season because if you look at our previous games against Sundowns, we lost due to their individual brilliance.'
The Usuthu boss highlighted the match-winning qualities that Sundowns' stars have consistently produced against his side.
'The likes of Lucas Ribeiro and Peter Shalulile stood out for them in games against us — they made the difference. So this is why I say it's going to be difficult for everyone,' Zwane added.
AmaZulu's recent meetings with Sundowns have often been close in general play, only for individual moments to tip the balance towards the Pretoria giants. Zwane knows that neutralising those threats will be key if his team is to return from Loftus with a positive result.
His side's defensive performance against Orbit offered cause for optimism, with Keagan Allen and Taariq Fielies marshalling the backline effectively. The clean sheet was a promising foundation, but Zwane will be urging greater attacking efficiency, especially in a fixture where chances may be scarce.
For Zwane, the bigger picture is that this season's league campaign could be among the most competitive in years, with smaller clubs showing less fear and bigger teams facing greater challenges across the board.
Tuesday's clash will serve as an early litmus test for both teams — Sundowns looking to reassert their dominance, and AmaZulu aiming to prove they can go toe-to-toe with the very best.

Stellies worry Chiefs Steve Barker's ten-man Stellies, however, came at Chiefs and twice hit the woodwork in the first half. Chiefs regrouped after the break, and after missing a couple of gilt-edged opportunities, it was Glody Lilepo who sealed the win from the penalty spot in stoppage time. 'We suffered a bit in the first half. We scored and there was the red card, and we had some luck we didn't concede,' Ben Youssef told SuperSport TV. 'But the players did well and I am happy for the fans.' Ben Youssef also sent his best wishes to Nasreddine Nabi, who missed the game to be with his wife in Tunisia, after a road accident left her in hospital in ICU. 'We are praying for the coach,' added Ben Youssef. Chiefs managed the game far better in the second half, with Wandile Duba and Lilepo both blazing over from inside the box. Amakhosi started with just one of their new signings against Stellenbosch, in right back Thabiso Monyane. Midfielder Ethan Chislett, left back Nkanyiso Shinga and striker Flavio Silva were not even in the squad. 'Step by step we will see the new players and I think this season will be better for us,' said Ben Youssef. Barker, meanwhile, admitted that his side had not done themselves any favours. 'We spoke to the players we know red cards and penalties can make it very difficult,' Barker told SuperSport TV. 'A double blow' 'It is something we don't want to be giving away and we did both. Kaizer Chiefs fans already ordering league trophy engraving after matchday 1

Kaizer Chiefs are off to a winning start following a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in their first match of the Betway Premiership. Goals from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Makabi Lilepo saw Amakhosi claim all three points in Cape Town in their opening league game. This is the second season in a row that Chiefs have claimed a win in their first league match. Coming into the match, the Glamour Boys were without their head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who flew to Tunisia after his wife was involved in an accident. Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze were on the touchline during Kaizer Chiefs' opening match of the season. A win sees Amakhosi third in the Betway Premiership and most importantly, they are above rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. The two teams failed to win their opening matches. Despite Stellies playing most of the match with 10 men, Amakhosi fans feel their team is going in the right direction. Some fans feel the team can go all out and win the Betway Premiership after watching just one match. 'Kaizer Chiefs have scored more league goals than both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns combined.' tweeted @aey_dear. 'Good penalty. However, with what I saw in yesterday's matches, we really ought to be sharper, more coherent, clinical and composed than this. We have to pick up our feet and heads much earlier into the season. I love the hunger and pressing!' tweete @TakuraChamuka. @LwandleMkh_ wrote: ''Pirates lost .. Sundowns drew…Mathematically if we win all of our games we will win the league.'
