30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Roschon Johnson (No. 30)
Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year.

First up at No. 30 is running back Roschon Johnson, who served as the team's short-yardage back in 2024, and has a chance to earn more carries with a new coaching staff.
Background
Position: Running back
Age: 24
Experience: 3rd season
2025 cap hit: $1.22 million
2024 recap
Johnson's flashes during his rookie season weren't enough to convince the Bears front office he could ascend to starter status in Year 2. The team signed veteran D'Andre Swift in free agency, and Johnson was firmly put in a reserve role. Even worse, Johnson was a healthy scratch to begin Week 1 as offensive coordinator Shane Waldron opted to rely on other skill players.

That proved to be a mistake, though, and Johnson made sure to show why. The Bears struggled to run the ball early on and needed a consistent threat in between the tackles. Johnson began to earn more carries and wound up becoming the goal-line back in scoring situations while helping improve the overall rushing attack. With just 55 carries, Johnson scored six touchdowns and converted 17 first downs. That's one more first down than he had in 2023 with 81 carries. He played in 14 total games, missing two more late in the season due to a concussion.

2025 outlook
Entering his third season, Johnson hasn't become the starting-caliber running back some thought he could be when he was drafted out of Texas. That doesn't mean he still doesn't have an important role to fill. Despite rumors swirling that they could overhaul the position during the offseason, the Bears only made a minor addition at running back when they drafted Kyle Monangai in the seventh round. That gives Johnson a strong shot to earn important carries for the 2025 season.

As of now, the Bears are expected to lean on Swift as their RB1, but Johnson has a relatively clear path in front of him to spell him. The Bears need a bruising back to carry the ball in between the tackles in key situations, and it would be surprising if Swift is the right man for the job. That's where Johnson could shine once again.
Big Question: What will Johnson's role be in the new offense?
A new coaching staff brings many questions for every position group. When it comes to Johnson and the running backs, it's fair to wonder where exactly he fits in. Monangai, while being a late pick, is still highly thought of and could emerge as a legitimate option in the backfield. It's possible Johnson is the odd man out when training camp concludes, despite his past success.
On the other hand, the Bears' staff may see Johnson as the ideal complement to Swift as a 1B back. Ben Johnson prefers to operate with a running back committee and has had an effective approach during his days in Detroit with a smasher and a slasher. Even when he and Swift were in Detroit, the Lions had Jamaal Williams, who led the league with 17 touchdowns in 2022. Roschon Johnson could be the Williams of this Bears offense and wind up leading the team in carries.

The coaching staff is still getting a feel for the players, so we won't know how the Bears plan to utilize their running backs for quite some time. Regardless, Johnson possesses a skill set that will benefit the Bears in 2025. Whether or not he can build off that and do more remains to be seen.

Lightning Rumored Star Target Is Off The Board
On July 1, ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported that the Tampa Bay Lightning were one of the teams believed to be interested in star forward Nikolaj Ehlers. However, the possibility of Ehlers coming to Tampa Bay can now be officially forgotten, as he has picked his new team. The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they have signed Ehlers to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million. With this, Ehlers will now be a significant part of the Hurricanes' top six for a long time. Advertisement While the Lightning were rumored to be interested in Ehlers, it is not particularly surprising that he is heading elsewhere. They have very little cap space to work with this summer and would have needed to move out some money to improve their chances of landing a top free agent like Ehlers. If the Lightning found a way to land Ehlers, he undoubtedly would have been a major pickup for their roster. He would have been an excellent fit in their top six and on their power play, as he is a very impactful offensive contributor. The 29-year-old forward has scored at least 21 goals eight times over his 10-year career and has recorded at least 60 points four times. This includes this past campaign, as he had 24 goals and 63 points in 69 games with the Winnipeg Jets. It is going to be very fascinating to see how Ehlers performs for the Hurricanes from here, but on paper, this looks like a great move for a Carolina club with Stanley Cup aspirations. Celtics pursuit in Damian Lillard calms down for one major reason
Damian Lillard will have an opportunity to choose any team he wants after leaving the Milwaukee Bucks. According to reports, the Boston Celtics have some interest, and it makes plenty of sense. Whether they view him as a star instantly when he returns from his injury, or someone they can pair with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in certain sets, there's reason to believe that Lillard would be a great fit. Advertisement He isn't the best defender, which doesn't exactly fit the Celtics, but outside of that, he'd be a nice addition. It won't be easy for the Celtics to land him, with recently outlining what it would take for the Celtics to pick him up in free agency. It's also important to note that Lillard will be sidelined for much of next season due to his Achilles injury. 'The Celtics are currently slightly above the second apron with their projected payroll, but more tweaks to the roster are being explored per sources. Those inevitable tweaks will ultimately reduce Boston's payroll and salaries in a season where spending big into the tax doesn't make sense when Tatum is sidelined. 'While Boston remains above the second apron, they can only offer the veteran's minimum exception. However, as long as the Celtics get and stay under the second apron (via other moves), the door would open technically to Boston using the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.7 million). Whether Boston would want to offer that money to Lillard is an open question, since giving him that deal would make getting under the luxury tax line this season that much more challenging (Boston is already $20 million over the tax line with the current roster),' they wrote. Advertisement MORE: Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo trade pitch swaps four players and three picks from Bulls As the Celtics attempt to navigate their situation, they have to find a way to get under the luxury tax. They're already over $20 million over that tax line with the current roster, per MassLive, and adding Lillard would only add to that. However, they can get creative, so it's possible that this could work.

Caleb Williams' Ceiling Draws Comparison to NFC North Rival Ahead of Year 2
Caleb Williams' Ceiling Draws Comparison to NFC North Rival Ahead of Year 2 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Bears have undergone a full-scale reset, and it starts at the top with new head coach Ben Johnson. All signs point to one mission: build around Caleb Williams. The city's been through enough QB drama to last a lifetime, and fans are ready for something real. Now entering his second NFL season, Williams will be expected to grow fast—and according to a recent comp making the rounds, he may be closer to a key division rival than many thought. The name floated has fans raising eyebrows. Advertisement Heading into his second year, Williams remains one of the NFL's most intriguing question marks. While expectations were sky-high when the Bears drafted him No. 1 overall, his rookie campaign left plenty to be desired. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) warms up prior to a game against the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Biggerstaff/Imagn Images In a detailed analysis, Pro Football Focus projected Williams' second-year ceiling—one that mirrors NFC North rival Jordan Love. The Packers quarterback is coming off a 2024 campaign where he threw for 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions. PFF didn't sugarcoat Williams' rookie struggles: 'Williams entered the NFL with a tremendous amount of hype, only to disappoint as a rookie... He flashed big-play potential and incredible arm talent, but he struggled with accuracy and took on pressure and sacks far too often.' 'His 63.5 PFF passing grade was the worst of the five first-round quarterbacks... His 54.7% accurate rate, 23.2% uncatchable-pass rate, and 26.1% pressure-to-sack rate echoed the same red flags from USC.' Still, PFF noted the turnaround is possible—citing Jared Goff and Bryce Young as recent examples. And with one of the most dynamic supporting casts in football, Williams isn't short on tools. Rome wasn't built in a day, but Chicago fans won't wait forever. Advertisement If he can match Love's second-year output, the Bears could be in for a major breakthrough. It's not just about numbers—it's about control, decision-making, and proving you belong. With Johnson calling plays and a revamped offense around him, the table is set. Now, it's all on Caleb to take the leap. The pressure is real, the expectations louder, and the NFC North isn't giving anyone free passes.
