Pinewood Studios invites opinion on scaled back expansion plan

BBC News25-02-2025
An approved £800m expansion of the sound stages of a world-renowned film studio is to be reviewed, a spokesperson has said.Pinewood Studios, near Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire, known for the filming of the James Bond and Star Wars franchises, said it was looking to change the plans to build 21 new stages, a training hub and a publicly accessible nature reserve. It said it was proposing to combine a "smaller film production studio with a data centre" due to a reduction in global content production, increased construction costs and business rates. The public is being asked to give feedback at three events on 25, 26 and 27 February - and by contacting the company.
The studio group said that in 2023, planning permission was granted, but since then "there has been a reduction in global film and high-end television production which has triggered a review of our existing planning consent". "In response and considering national economic and planning policy, we are reviewing development options for Pinewood South and are looking at a proposal to combine a smaller film production studio with a data centre."It said the expansion and investment would create more film stages and production facilities, alongside the development of a data centre.
Pinewood Studios opened in 1936 and has played host to the filming of dozens of major movie projects, as well as the Superman, James Bond and Star Wars franchises.Chief executive officer at the Pinewood Group, David Conway, said: "We are a dynamic business in a fast-moving industry, and we are committed to invest in the ongoing expansion of Pinewood Studios."The reduction in global content production, combined with rising construction costs and business rates, triggered a review of our existing planning consent and we believe the revised proposals provide a credible alternative."

Front-runner to play James Bond takes himself out of running

An actor widely rumoured to be playing James Bond has officially denied that he's up for the role. Six years after Daniel Craig announced his retirement from the franchise, fans are continuing to wonder who will fill his shiny shoes. Former favourite Idris Elba, 52, previously ruled himself out from playing the iconic sleuth, while other hotly tipped actors, including James Norton, have not confirmed any involvement. The current front-runner to become Bond is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while bookies have also recently given preferential odds to the likes of Henry Cavill, Jack Lowden, Tom Holland, and Callum Turner. Twisters actor Glen Powell, one of Hollywood's most in-demand heartthrobs in recent years, has also been the subject of speculation for the role. But Glen has dashed fans' hopes with a recent comment, telling The Hollywood Reporter: 'I'm a Texan.' 'My family and I joke around, I can play Jimmy Bond, but I should not be playing James Bond. Get an authentic Brit for that job. That's who belongs in that tuxedo.' Glen isn't the only actor to have ruled himself out, with White Lotus star Theo James also previously denying a connection to the role. He told The Guardian: 'Everyone's interested in that because it's a big part of British cultural identity, but that probably wouldn't be me. 'I do think there are better people for that job. And, honestly, it would be terrifying: if you do that, there's no going back. You're opening Pandora's box there.' But Aaron Taylor-Johnson, one of the most consistent favourites for the role, has left things more open-ended. The actor gave a very coy response when asked about what he'll be doing after working on 28 Years Later and its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, back-to-back. Questioned by Deadline at the horror movie's premiere in June, he said: 'I can't talk about it.' He was already being led away before the question was asked, and offered a smile alongside his vague answer. The Canadian director, best known for directing Dune and Dune: Part Two, as well as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and Prisoners, expressed reverence for the character. 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,' he said in a statement released Wednesday. 'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.' While acknowledging the enormous expectations, Villeneuve said he intends to 'honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.' He called the opportunity 'a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.' The announcement comes during a period of major upheaval behind the scenes of the Bond universe. More Trending Amazon Studios officially purchased MGM for $8.45billion (£6.7billion) in 2022, with a new agreement over creative control meaning Bond — and whoever is next to play 007 – is entirely under the streamer's control. It is a landmark decision as family-run Eon Productions has brought Bond to the big screen since the franchise began. After decades of tight creative control, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson – heirs to the franchise through their father, original Bond producer Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli – have ceded key decision-making power to Amazon MGM Studios. But as much as things are changing for the Bond franchise, it seems a Texan James Bond is still a bit too far-fetched. Got a story? Iconic James Bond star says he will consider RETURNING for new 007 film... as role is still up for grabs

The role of James Bond is still up for grabs, but a familiar face may now be open to returning to the franchise. Pierce Brosnan, who portrayed the spy in four films, has revealed he would consider reprising his role - depending on what director Denis Villeneuve has in store for the British secret agent. In an interview with Radio Times, Pierce, 72, was asked if he would 'do Bond again - is it time for a senior citizen 007?' 'My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who's going to be the next James Bond,' the Irish actor replied. 'There are many great candidates out there, and I'm sure they're going to make it a spectacle of delight. I don't think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if [next 007 director Denis] Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. 'Why not? It's great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?' Pierce portrayed the iconic spy on the big screen in 1995's GoldenEye, 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies, 1999's The World Is Not Enough, and 2002's Die Another Day. 'I wish them well,' Pierce said of the next film in an interview with SAGA earlier this month. 'I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character. 'I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps giving. 'And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: "Show us what you're going to do."' The role has been vacant ever since Daniel Craig, the latest 007, departed in 2021. Already a star before playing Bond for the first time in 2005 blockbuster Casino Royale, Daniel amassed a reported $100million from his six outings as the secret agent. Now actor Aaron Taylor Johnson has emerged as the man most likely to replace Daniel Craig. Taylor Johnson has previously played it cool when asked about the possibility of him becoming Bond, telling Esquire: 'It's not really for me to stay anything.' Should he be named as Bond, the actor will be working with Steven Knight, who has signed up to write the latest James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in July. The British screenwriter is perhaps best known as the creator of the hugely popular BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders starring Cillian Murphy. And now he's set to lend his talents to the long-running spy franchise by drafting the script for the newest 007 film, with Knight revealing that it has always been on his 'bucket list'. The latest Bond film is currently in development and is to be helmed by Dune director Denis Villeneuve, with Amazon MGM Studios overseeing the project after longtime producer Barbara Broccoli gave up creative control. Meanwhile, Amy Pascal and David Heyman are on board to produce the movie via Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films respectively, while Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer.

Glen Powell insists he 'should not' be in the running to play the next James Bond and says the iconic role should go to an 'authentic Brit' - after a new 007 favourite emerged

Glen Powell has insisted he 'should not' be in the running to play James Bond. The Top Gun: Maverick actor, 36, has been among those tipped to take over from Daniel Craig as the suave spy, but he feels that the role should go to an 'authentic Brit' rather than an American star. Glen, best known for his roles in Twisters and Anyone But You, told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I'm Texan. A Texan should not play James Bond. 'My family and I joke around, I can play Jimmy Bond, but I should not be playing James Bond. Get an authentic Brit for that job. That's who belongs in that tuxedo.' While Glen has ruled himself out of playing James Bond, he did confirm he and Sydney Sweeney are 'still talking' about making a sequel to Anyone But You. However, they have agreed they won't do so 'until it's the right idea', which 'requires patience', so fans may have to wait some time for the follow-up. The actor added that he would love to direct a film in the future, but for now he is content to learn from those he is working with on his movies. He said: 'That's something I'd love to do. 'But right now, I'm getting to be in film school, I'm getting to work with [Richard] Linklater and Lee Isaac Chung and J.J. Abrams and Edgar Wright. I'm working with my heroes. 'And what's been really, really fun is — every set I'm on, I pick up things. Whenever that time comes, I'll be much more prepared.' Glen isn't the only actor to have ruled himself out of playing James Bond. The Gentlemen star Theo James was previously linked to the role but has since said he found the idea 'terrifying'. He told The Guardian: 'Everyone's interested in that because it's a big part of British cultural identity, but that probably wouldn't be me. 'I do think there are better people for that job. And, honestly, it would be terrifying: if you do that, there's no going back. You're opening Pandora's box there.' And despite persistent rumours, Henry Cavill, 42, insisted he had 'no information' to share on the franchise. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, he added: 'Maybe I'm too old now, maybe I'm not, we'll see.' Currently, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is tipped as the bookies favourite to take over as 007, still vacant following Craig's departure in 2021, and receive the inevitable payday that comes with a licence to kill. In May, the actor sparked inevitable speculation that he has already accepted the role by signing a commercial deal with Omega - the official watch provider for the Bond franchise. Bets placed on Taylor-Johnson to become the latest star 'with a license to kill' subsequently surged by a whopping three times compared to the previous fortnight, according to Oddschecker. In June, it was revealed that Denis Villeneuve will direct the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2021's No Time To Die. He said in a statement: 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.
