Rob Dahm's 12-Rotor Engine Made 1,515 HP. Then It Caught on Fire
The saga of the mighty 12-rotor engine continues. Rob Dahm's latest video on the monster mill focuses on more dyno tuning, and there's some good news to share. The engine is indeed a beast, posting four-figure horsepower and torque numbers with ease. Unfortunately, the big rotary set itself on fire in the process. And that's not the only setback in the project.
We've been following the progress of this project for a while now. Dahm
first got the engine
back in 2023; it was built several years ago but in his care, the massive 15.7-liter engine gained not one, not two, but
three turbochargers
. That's because the rotors are set up in three banks, giving the engine something of a V-shape to it. Before Dahm got his hands on it, the 12-rotor allegedly made 1,400 horsepower and over 800 pound-feet of torque, spinning to over 10,000 rpm in the process.
We can confirm it makes at least 1,515 hp and a very stout 1,281.4 lb-ft of torque. We say
at least
because things are still very much in the testing and troubleshooting phase, as evidenced by the engine catching fire after its power pull. Apparently, it generated so much heat that plastic and fiberglass shielding combusted. It ultimately reached 7,500 rpm–far short of its rumored limit.
Surprisingly, it seems the dyno team wasn't immediately prepared for such a situation. Someone is heard asking "do we have an extinguisher or something?" Moments later, a person runs into the room and starts
blowing
on the engine. Finally, someone jumps in with a fire extinguisher, roughly 15 seconds after the fire started. The damage was relegated to the aforementioned shielding, and after a bit of clean-up, the engine was ready for more testing.
That's where things go from bad to worse. Apparently the engine was damaged to some degree during the high-rpm pull, but not due to the fire. A keyway was damaged, causing potential timing issues, and the engine itself became severely flooded from the power run. Back at the shop, a compression test found some rotors down considerably, likely due to damaged seals.
Dahm doesn't believe there's any detrimental damage to the engine, but it will need a full teardown to inspect the internals and replace seals. The original goal for this video was 2,000 horses; with a leaner setup (and obviously no fire) it could get there. But we'll have to wait for a future video to see if that goal is ultimately realized.

Subaru Just Dropped a Teaser for a Sporty New Model – Could it Be the STI Successor?
Subaru's iconic rally-derived sport sedan, the WRX STI, has been absent from the market since 2021. Although its slightly less potent sibling, the WRX, is still available for purchase from your local Subaru dealer, Subaru loyalists have long been awaiting any sort of news about an upcoming replacement for the hotter, Subaru Technica International-developed model. That lengthy wait may almost be over, according to Motor1, which reports that, "During a media session surrounding the Super Taikyu series at Fuji Speedway, Subaru Executive Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer, Tetsuro Fujinuki, confirmed a new performance model for this year's Japan Mobility Show." Although no official details have been announced yet, we can expect to learn more come October when the 2025 Japan Mobility Show begins. For the time being, however, we're left wondering what exactly Subaru might have up its sleeve. When looking at Subaru's teaser image, it seems pretty clear that whatever Subaru is planning on unveiling in November, it'll be heavily based on the current VB-generation WRX, as made evident by its distinct forward fascia, C-shaped LED headlights, and, of course, its signature hood scoop. Notable differences that set this teaser apart from the standard WRX are its aggressive front bumper splitter, its widened wheel arches, and perhaps most curiously, the blurred rear end. What's most intriguing about the rear of the car's roof is the obvious tailgate hinges, which might suggest that a hatchback variant of the Subaru WRX STI might return after a long hiatus–something that many Subaru and hot hatch fans alike will be extremely excited about. Despite the hatchback hints, the image also seems to suggest a large spoiler could be present on the rear. Keep in mind that this is pure speculation, but it seems like the details on the rear of the vehicle in the image might suggest that both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback variants of the WRX STI could be made available. Only time will tell, but we remain extremely hopeful that the beloved WRX STI Hatchback makes a glorious return. Using generative text-to-image artificial intelligence and Adobe Photoshop, we imagine what a tarted-up, STI-branded variant of the VB-generation Subaru WRX could look like. Although the render pictured above depicts a two-door coupe body reminiscent of the iconic Subaru Impreza 22B STI, an actual WRX STI would likely retain all four of its doors, or perhaps gain a fifth door in hatchback guise. Despite its coupe appearance, the above render gives us a glimpse at possible styling alterations for the STI model, such as facelifted headlights for a more aggressive look, larger grilles for increased cooling airflow, wider wheel arches with contrast painted overfenders, and, of course, an extra aggressive rear spoiler for enhanced aerodynamics. Although not many details have been officially confirmed yet, we're eagerly awaiting more information to be revealed in October of this year. We'd love to see a hatchback return to Subaru's iconic WRX lineup, so hopefully the tailgate hinges on the teaser image turning out to be a clue and not just meaningless speculation. Tesla's Optimus robot VP is leaving the company
The head of Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot program, Milan Kovac, is leaving the company. Kovac said Friday in a post on X that he "had to make the most difficult decision" of his life to leave. "I've been far away from home for too long, and will need tos pend more time with family abroad," he wrote. Kovac said that was "the only reason" and that his support for Musk and Tesla is "ironclad." Kovac's departure was first reported Friday by Bloomberg News. The departure comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed the company will have "thousands" of Optimus robots operating in its factories by the end of this year. "And we expect to scale Optimus up faster than any product, I think, in history, to get to millions of units per year as soon as possible," Musk said last month. Kovac worked at Tesla for nearly 10 years, with much of that time coming as a top engineer on the Autopilot team. He was tapped to help lead development of Optimus in 2022 and became a vice president overseeing the program in late 2024. "I'm driving the Optimus program (Tesla's humanoid robot) & all its engineering teams," Kovac previously wrote on his LinkedIn profile. "Separately, I'm also driving the engineering teams responsible for all the software foundations & infrastructure common between Optimus and Autopilot." Ashok Elluswamy, the vice president of Tesla's AI software division, will take over the Optimus project, according to Bloomberg. CHP launches statewide Maximum Enforcement Period this weekend

This comes with the Speed Prevention Campaign, as officers plan on increasing patrols and concentrating on drivers who are endangering lives. CHP said its goal is to save lives by lowering unsafe speeds. According to officials, unsafe speeds are a significant factor in nearly 30% of statewide crashes. CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System showed 2024 data that consisted of more than 116,000 crashes being a direct result of unsafe speed. The result of those crashes killed nearly 500 victims and injured over 48,000 people. Crews rescue driver from truck hanging over San Joaquin River CHP officers issued almost 243,000 citations for speed-related violations in 2025, including: More than 47,000 citations for speeds over 100 mph Nearly 183,000 citations for exceeding 65 mph Over 12,000 for driving too fast for the current road or weather conditions CHP said that the officers operating the specially marked patrol vehicles have issued over 2,700 speeding citations to date.
