Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off PUP list, All-Pro receiver's contract situation still up in the air

The Washington Commanders announced Saturday that they have activated All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list. The move is unrelated to McLaurin's contract negotiations, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. And, so, although McLaurin is making progress in his return from an ankle injury that bothered him late last season, his contract situation is still up in the air. The Commanders star wideout is in the third year of a three-year, $68.4 million contract with an average annual salary (AAV) of $22.8 million. He skipped spring practices and mandatory minicamp and then held out the first week of training camp before reporting as a hold-in. The seventh-year receiver was fined $200,000 for his four-day holdout. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, is looking for a new deal that reflects a surging wide receiver market and his WR1 value in a Commanders offense led by now-second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels. More specifically, McLaurin is targeting the $33 million AAV the Pittsburgh Steelers are now paying DK Metcalf, ESPN's John Keim reported Saturday. It's important to note, though, that Metcalf is 27. And as Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson pointed out, only two wide receivers in league history have signed contracts the year they were 30 or turning 30 that earned them more than $23 million annually: Tyreek Hill in 2024 with the Miami Dolphins ($30 million AAV) and Davante Adams ($28 million) with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. McLaurin has been vocal this offseason about his desire to continue his career in Washington. He did, however, request a trade on July 31 as contract frustrations boiled over. McLaurin, now a two-time Pro Bowler, ranked second in the NFL last season with a career-best 13 touchdown catches. He also led the league with 24 contested catches during the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus. While spilling over 1,000 receiving yards for the fifth year in a row, McLaurin made 82 grabs, at least 37 more than every other Washington wideout during Daniels' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024. Now that McLaurin's activated off the Commanders' PUP list, he's eligible to practice. That said, his return will likely begin with work off to the side with athletic trainers.

Questions asked after RECORD-BREAKING Virgil van Dijk display

put up a record-breaking display against Bournemouth on Friday night as the Premier League returned for the new season. But should Liverpool be concerned? Is it a good thing when a defender has a lot to do? Actually, the answer to that question is a resounding 'no'. A better question is: should you be happy when a defender does a lot well. Virgil van Dijk put in a historic performance on Friday as he tried to keep Bournemouth at bay. Shop the LFC Store LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! The headline stat is this: Van Dijk cleared the ball 17 times. That's a monster figure and the most he's ever cleared the ball in a Premier League game. For some perspective on that, the most he cleared a ball last season was 13 times away at Everton. The second was 11 times away at Manchester United. In other words, unique fixtures that bring about a different type of football. Friday was supposed to be fairly routine but the strange stats keep on coming. 13 of those clearances were headed - and that again is a record. In fact, Van Dijk's number of headed clearances alone was enough to equal his total best last season. Another way to show how strange this was: Van Dijk made 11 clearances across both combined fixtures against Bournemouth last season. Something was different last night and it is slightly concerning. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Liverpool 4-2 Bournemouth Now, let's not be too negative because Liverpool did win and they scored some incredible goals. That Federico Chiesa winner was a truly sensational moment. But defensively, Liverpool were lacking. Bournemouth were consistently able to get through the press and attack the backline, with ample opportunities to get the ball into the box. Hence Van Dijk's clearances. Now, positionally, Liverpool weren't enormously different from last season. The formation was the same, most of the players were the same. The major differences, certainly defensively, were a lack of Ryan Gravenberch in the middle, two new very-attacking full-backs, and Florian Wirtz being the first part of the midfield press. The reality is that all probably contributed to Liverpool leaking chances. There are a lot of moving parts here and it's only natural that the team isn't as solid as last season. But Arne Slot needs to figure out the shape of this team - and how to bring about the solidity of last season. Otherwise, there are enormous questions over the consistency of this team and it's ability to fight for the title. There's only so much Van Dijk can do, after all. Liverpool can't ask him to bring about 17 clearances each and every match - not if they want to compete. It's a learning process now and we do believe the questions will be answered. For now, we're just grateful that Van Dijk is there to sure things up while the squad adjusts. But let's hope it was a one-off.
