Insurance officer loses RM55,000 to Facebook job scam
SERI ALAM: An insurance quality officer lost RM54,950.59 after falling for a fake part-time job offer promoted on Facebook last month.
The woman, 32, came across an advertisement on the social media platform on May 30, which promised commissions of between 10 and 35 per cent.
After she clicked a link on the advertisement, she was redirected to a WhatsApp number operated under the name "BookAssist Helpdesk".
Enticed by the promised returns, she made 16 online transfers to 10 bank accounts over four days. She realised she had been scammed when she was asked to pay more money to 'unlock' her earned commission.
Police checks via the Semak Mule portal revealed that six of the the 10 accounts used in the scam were linked to seven job fraud reports.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak advised the public to be wary of flashy online offers and to verify job postings thoroughly.
"Avoid sharing personal banking details with unknown parties and check suspicious accounts via the Semak Mule portal," he said
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
He also urged victims to contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 for swift action to block outgoing funds.

Cops rescue three foreigners held captive in George Town
GEORGE TOWN: Three foreign men who were held captive in an apartment at Jalan Dr Wu Lien Teh, here, were rescued by a police team during a raid at the residence yesterday. Timur Laut District Deputy Police Chief Supt Lee Swee Sake said police received a report from a 47-year-old foreign man who informed them that three of his friends had been detained by several individuals in the house. 'Acting on the information, a police team raided the house at 2 pm and successfully rescued three foreign men, aged between 28 and 52, who were found to be confined in the residence. 'Preliminary checks found all of them to be safe and in good health. Further investigation is ongoing to determine how long they had been held and the motive behind the confinement,' he said in a statement today. He said police also arrested three local men aged between 40 and 56 and a 40-year-old foreign woman, who are believed to have been responsible for guarding the victims. He added that all suspects have been remanded for four days until June 14 to assist with the investigation and that the case is being investigated under Section 344 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. 'Further investigation is ongoing, including whether the victims were lured here with false job offers before being confined. Checks revealed that all three foreign men had passports, though some had expired,' he said

Five arrested after brawl at Malaysia-Vietnam match
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested five local men suspected of being involved in a brawl after the 2027 Asia Cup Qualifiers football match between Malaysia and Vietnam at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, yesterday. Cheras Deputy District Police Chief Supt Ridzuan Khalid said the five men, aged between 19 and 27, were arrested in the parking area B, Bukit Jalil National Stadium, here at 11:50 pm and have been remanded for one day starting today for investigations under Section 147 of the Penal Code. 'The case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office for further instructions,' he said in a statement today.
