‘Hilarious' 2020s comedy is an ‘instant classic' and streaming for free

The film boasts a rare 96% Rotten Tomatoes score
An 'absolutely hilarious' coming-of-age drama that was dubbed an 'instant classic' is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.

The 2020 comedy Shiva Baby, which bagged a stellar 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, is now available to watch for free.

Written and directed by Emma Seligman, the film is set during an uncomfortable Jewish funeral service.

We follow 20-something university student Danielle (played by Rachel Sennott), who attends the sombre service with her parents Joel (Fred Melamed) and Debbie (Polly Draper).
Much to her horror, Danielle discovers that her ex-girlfriend Maya (portrayed by The Bear's Molly Gordon) and sugar daddy Max (played by Oppenheimer's Danny Deferrari) are also in attendance.
Tensions rise even higher when Max's wife Kim (depicted by Glee star Dianna Agron) and their baby join the service.

Shiva Baby marked Seligman's directorial debut, and was closely followed by her 2023 hit comedy Bottoms, which also starred Sennott opposite The Bear actor Ayo Edebiri.
With just two feature films under her belt, Seligman has managed to impress viewers and critics alike.

Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer raved about Shiva Baby, branding it "a masterpiece and an instant classic."
Someone else praised: "Shiva Baby has to be the most edge-of-your-seat-awkward film I've seen this year - possibly ever. That's not a criticism, on the contrary, Emma Seligman's ability to make the audience feel the tension in the room is remarkable."
Another viewer hailed the comedy's ability to depict the relatable experience of a 'quarter-life crisis.'

"I can safely say that not many times have I seen such accurate and ultimately endearing representations of the infamous "quarter-life crisis" as Shiva Baby managed to pull off," they penned.
Over on Google reviews, one moviegoer recommended: "I had no idea how good this movie would be! Absolutely hilarious , highly recommend! If you are having a bad, this movie will definitely turn your day around!"
Meanwhile, a second fan described what sets the comedy apart, penning: "Shiva Baby is like being trapped at the most awkward family reunion imaginable, except it's not your family, and you can't stop watching the chaos unfold."
They continued: "It's a recipe for disaster deliciously baked to perfection, with every cringe-worthy moment seasoned just right for maximum discomfort."

Breakingviews - Influencers have defences against an AI onslaught

LONDON, Aug 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Turns out there is in fact something less real than a TikTok or YouTube influencer's carefully curated life: one that doesn't exist at all. Hyperreal digital personas created by artificial intelligence are muscling into the market in which brands pay $11 billion annually to the famous and not-so-famous to raise awareness of their wares. That's a problem for the humans, but maybe not an insuperable one. So-called 'AI influencers' are developed by teams using tools such as AI text-to-video generation developed by Adobe (ADBE.O), opens new tab or Google. One example is Yuri, opens new tab, a virtual singer created by a Chinese artist named Hanqing, who racked up 7 million streams after her debut and is involved in a planned marketing campaign by The North Face, the outdoor clothing brand owned by $5 billion VF Corp (VFC.N), opens new tab. Hanqing choreographs her lifestyle and interactions – just like she's a real star. Compared to humans, digital talent is cheaper. A collaboration with an AI influencer, which includes a video, a few posts, and Instagram stories, can cost as little as $4,000, Lauren Hannifan of AI influencer agency Pixel reckons. A real-world influencer with 100,000 followers could cost more than twice that. For brands, the appeal goes beyond cost: AI avatars don't have mood swings, agency disputes, or off-topic opinions. Companies can even co-create characters with studios, to retain full control over tone and message. This is bad news for human influencers, opens new tab like Khaby Lame and Charli D'Amelio, who are already seeing consumer brands spending less aggressively. U.S. influencers' revenue growth is set to slow to 15% this year, down from 24% last year, according to eMarketer estimates. A McKinsey survey found, opens new tab 68% of global fashion consumers are unhappy with the saturation of sponsored posts, and turn less frequently to influencers than a few years ago. If audiences can't tell the difference between AI and human, or worse stop caring, things will deteriorate further. Still, human influencers have some cause for comfort. High-quality avatars demand serious upfront investment – as much as eight months of unpaid development to build, train and test, according to The Clueless, the agency behind Aitana Lopez, a pink-haired virtual fitness model who now earns over $1,100 per advertisement. The perfect control enabled by AI may also come at the cost of credibility. Too much polish can repel audiences. And given over 50% of Gen Z and younger generations already dislike engaging with AI-generated influencers, according to a YouGov survey, opens new tab of U.S. consumers, a belated audience realisation that an assumed human influencer is actually AI may destroy rather than bolster brand value. 'Even real idols have a designed personality,' Yuri mused in one of her videos. That may be true – but it doesn't mean AI types like her will have everything to themselves. 'I gasped when discovering true value of my £18 charity shop jacket'

Danielle, who regularly shares videos of her out shopping in charity shops, said a jacket she'd found was a bargain - but some people weren't quite so impressed A woman was stunned by the actual worth of an £18 jacket in a charity shop after she Googled the brand while in-store and found it on Harrods. Danielle, who posts on TikTok as @charityshoplife, revealed there's a charity shop where all unsold items from the local area are sent and further discounted, with some pieces selling for as little as £3. ‌ The shop is called the Royal Trinity Outlet, located at 304 North End Road. When Danielle previously shared this information, some TikTokers accused her of "ruining" the shop, claiming you wouldn't be able to find " bargains" there anymore. However, she set out to prove them wrong. ‌ "It's basically where pieces go that don't sell," she explained, showcasing a red dress that was initially priced at £28 in the charity shop but had been reduced to just £3. ‌ "Royal Trinity is known for designer pieces," Danielle enthused, asking: "Where else can you pick up Dsquared jeans for £6?" She displayed a pair of Monolo shoes, which did look a bit worn, but were only £16. Danielle suggested with a "little TLC," they could look as good as new, and considering some pairs cost over £1,000 new, it might be worth a shot. A brand new Urban Outfitters dress with tags was just £3, and a Tory Burch polo originally priced at £50 had been reduced to £15. It was embellished with "little pearl buttons" which elevated it from your average top. But then, she stumbled upon a jacket which was for sale for £18 - but upon closer examination, she realised it was worth considerably more. ‌ The label was eskandar, and she explained: "A jacket will cost you around £600," while displaying a similar one on screen that was selling in Harrods for £695. When she approached the till, the staff member asked whether she was fond of that brand, before showing her additional discounted eskandar items. In the comments section, Danielle remarked: "People get mad when I 'gatekeep' charity shops and people get mad when I share shops... you can't win on the internet." Someone replied: "As the saying goes... You can't please all the people all of the time lol. Thanks for sharing." Another suggested these prices ought to be standard rather than a special offer, writing: "My problem with London charity shops at the moment and Royal Trinity especially is that the prices are too high! These prices are what all charity shops should be in my opinion." One bloke joked he needed to "up my charity shop game" and start second-hand hunting for designer pieces.
