A trio of tips for day three of Royal Ascot
At first glance, today's Britannia Stakes handicap (5 p.m.) at Royal Ascot looks an impossible puzzle to solve. No less than 30 three-year-old runners are due to line up and plenty of them are plot horses that will go on to win off much higher official marks than they are running from today.
However, my strong fancy for this race is PAROLE D'ORO to pull off a coup that has been some two years in the planning. This lightly-raced colt has only run three times in his career, just enough to earn a handicap rating.
Each of his three runs has seen an improvement but I am convinced the best is yet to come from trainer Michael Bell's charge. I will leave it to Bell to explain the plan as detailed in a newspaper interview earlier this month: 'He's been aimed at this since the day we bought him and everything has revolved around getting him qualified because the owner lives in France and has a box at Ascot on the Thursday every year… He's been to Ascot before and run, very well, and we are very happy with him.' A long-term plan indeed, no ifs or buts.
Last time out Parole d'Oro looked like winning a mile contest at Thirsk only to be run down late on by Roger Varian's Teroomm, who has been well backed for today's contest. Parole d'Oro is 5lbs better off today for just a three-quarter length beating so he has every chance of turning around that form. His draw in stall 24 will be perfect if, as generally expected, high numbers are favoured and able jockey Callum Shepherd is entrusted with the steering. There is an awful lot in the horse's favour – but, sadly, no longer the price.
The 33-1 which was available first thing on Saturday with three bookmakers is a distant memory and odds on this race were first advertised too late to include this horse as an ante-post bet in my weekly blog on Friday morning. However, I still think he is just about worth an investment even at the far modest odds of 8-1. However, with such poor place terms, the recommendation is two points win at that price being offered only by Ladbrokes and Coral.
In the same race, AFENTIKO looks overpriced too for the Paul and Oliver Cole father and son training team. He finished like a train behind the aforementioned Teroomm at Haydock on his seasonal debut and this stiff mile at Ascot should suit. Furthermore, I like the booking of talented Warren Fentiman who will take 5lbs off for his apprentice allowance. Back Afentiko 1 point each way too at 18-1 with Willliam Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral, BetVictor or Unibet, all paying a miserly four places.
My only other new bet on day three is a real outsider in the Buckingham Palace Stakes handicap (6.10 p.m.). As regular readers will know, I am a huge fan of the training skills of Ed Bethell, who only sends down his very best horses from his North Yorkshire base if they have a chance of winning.
Bethell's five-year-old gelding YORKSHIRE is better than he showed last time out when fourth in a moderate Haydock handicap after running too freely. Today's race will be run at a fair clip and jockey Callum Rodriguez should be able to give Yorkshire cover. Back him 1 point each way at 40-1 with bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair or Unibet, all paying six places This race has been the plan for Yorkshire for the whole season and so I hope he will outrun his odds at a huge price.
Today's big race is the Ascot Gold Cup (4.20 p.m.) but I have already covered this race in an ante-post preview last month. I am more than happy to stick with my selection, Trawlerman each way, although the 8-1 has long vanished. In fact, I have been backing Trawlerman steadily ever since until his price eventually dropped below 5-1 because I couldn't, and still can't, see him being out of the first three.
I am hoping that William Buick can give Trawlerman a text-book front running ride because Illinois, the long-term favourite, is not guaranteed to stay this marathon trip of two and a half miles. However, Candelari is a big danger as he tries to become the first French-trained winner of the Ascot Gold Cup.
On balance, I hope and think Trawlerman will prevail as very few classy flat horses truly stay this trip but he is one of them, having been a close second in the race last year but with no Kyprios to contend with this time around. If you are not on already though, his price is too short now to get involved so just watch the race and enjoy it.
I will be back tomorrow morning with my tips for the fourth and fifth days of this wonderful meeting that keeps on giving.

England dropping Pope would be 'remarkable'
England v India - first TestVenue: Headingley Dates: 20-24 June Time: 11:00 BSTCoverage: Ball-by-ball radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds. In-play video clips and text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app. Today at the Test on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two each night. England dropping Ollie Pope for Jacob Bethell would have been "remarkable" after the batter scored 171 against Zimbabwe last month, says captain Ben between vice-captain Pope and 21-year-old Bethell was the major selection decision for England before the first Test against India on Friday at opted to retain Pope at number three, despite Bethell impressing in that position after being given his debut in New Zealand last year."The 'big selection' [idea] did not come from us," Stokes said."It would be remarkable to choose someone else if their last knock was a 170, and that's pretty much all I need to say on that." Bethell's opportunity at number three came when Pope stood in as wicketkeeper during Jamie's Smith paternity leave and moved down the scored half-centuries in each of the three Tests in New Zealand but then missed the Test against Zimbabwe because he was playing in the Indian Premier League. Pope went back to the position he has held since Stokes took over as captain in 2022 - he averages 43.06 at first drop despite also returning a series of low scores - against Zimbabwe and scored his seventh Test hundred in the role."In this day and age it's very tough to not see all that kind of speculation and stuff around it just because of how easily accessible things are. You don't even have to go and hunt for it to see it these days," Stokes said of Pope."But I think scoring 170 in his last Test match has sort of shown how well he's handled that extra scrutiny." England have had 'honest conversations' around style With an Ashes series in Australia to follow in the winter, the start of the much-anticipated five-match series against India signals the beginning of a run of 10 Tests which will define Stokes' reign as though, was keen to refute any suggestion England would have an eye on Australia while playing India."We will come to that when we come to that but for us right now it's about focusing on these five games that we've got coming up against India," he series also comes at an intriguing time for Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum with England having won four and lost four of their past eight their aggressive approach, they have reached remarkable highs - there were notable victories in their first year in charge against New Zealand, India and Pakistan - but series wins against West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand over the past 12 months have also been interspersed with awful defeats. Stokes says the squad have had "honest conversations" about how to improve."I don't think defensive frame of mind is the right way of saying it," Stokes said."I think it's just being smarter in those situations when it's obvious that the opposition is on top of us at that moment and they have got the upper hand on us. "'What do we need to do to wrestle that momentum back towards us so then we can start putting the pressure back onto them?'." Teams to play for Anderson-Tendulkar trophy The teams will play for the new Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, named after legendary former players James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. The trophy replaces the Pataudi Trophy, named after the Pataudi family."It's a fabulous feeling," Tendulkar told the BBC. "When I got to know about the honour, I was ecstatic. "I remember sharing this with my family and also spoke to Pataudi family as well. "I feel it's a reflection of what, not just me, but Jimmy and I have been able to contribute to our nation in Test cricket and it's all about Test cricket, which is the most challenging format."Anderson said: "It's pretty surreal. "You don't start playing cricket for things like this to happen, but when they do happen it's lovely, especially alongside Sachin. "I've not only played against him quite a few times, but growing up, watching him, seeing him play for Yorkshire as well, it's just an incredible feeling and I'm very honoured to be a part of it."

As part of the Bet365 Royal Ascot betting offers, the company will do a daily super boost for Royal Ascot, enhancing the odds of one of the favourites. Extra places: The majority of bookmakers will offer extra places for selected races. For example, they may bump up the number of places covered from three to four. Acca boosts: Getting a boost on your Royal Ascot accumulator is possible with a handful of sites, including BoyleSports. Depending on the number of legs, betting sites may apply a bonus of between 2.5 per cent up to 100 per cent on any winning acca bets. Cash back: Several horse racing betting sites have begun offering cash back on deposit losses. JeffBet's system gives punters 10 per cent of any losses back when they enter a specific promo code during the deposit process. Profit boosts: BetMGM, Unibet and NetBet are among the bookmakers offering Royal Ascot profit boost tokens. Bettors will usually need to place a qualifying wager before receiving their profit boost tokens for single bets. Cash refund: Rather than free bets, some betting sites will give bettors their stake back in cash if certain conditions are met. Best Odds Guaranteed: All the best horse racing betting sites offer Best Odds Guaranteed on every race at Royal Ascot. The best odds guarantee ensures that, if a bettor places a bet on a horse at a specific price, but the starting price (SP) is larger, the betting site will pay out at the better odds.
