AN HGV driver was on a video call moments before his lorry collided head-on with a car, which led to an 88-year-old woman losing her life, a court heard.
Blair Jardine, 31, caused Sarah Wood's death after his truck struck a car being driven by the pensioner's niece, Lyndsay Thomson.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard on Friday how the collision took place on the A70 Edinburgh to Ayr road on June 4, 2024, close to Ochiltree, East Ayrshire.
Prosecutor Alex Prentice KC said the incident took place at an unclassified junction at Killoch Collery.
Mr Prentice said the speed limit for HGVs was 40 miles per hour.
However, investigators established Jardine was driving at 56 mph.
Describing the moments leading up to the incident, Mr Prentice said: 'Ahead of him was a white van which had stopped and was signalling to turn right into a depot. There was a stationary car behind the van.
'Blair Jardine was on a hands-free video call with another person, and he did not pay attention to the road ahead.
'Consequently, he failed to react to the presence of the stationary vehicle, braked sharply, causing the wheels to lock and he was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision with the stationery west bound traffic so he swerved into the opposing carriageway causing a head on collision with Lyndsay Thomson's motor vehicle.
'Lyndsay Thomson and Sarah Wood were both severely injured. Sarah later died because of the injuries she sustained.'
The story emerged after Jardine, of Crosshill, South Ayrshire, pleaded guilty to causing death and severe injury by dangerous driving.
Mr Prentice said that following the collision, police and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene - they cut both Sarah and Lyndsay from the wreckage of the younger woman's MG ZS vehicle.
Diddy faces just two years in jail after overhyped prosecution but could still go BROKE, says lawyer
Both were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for emergency treatment.
The court heard that, meanwhile, police detained Jardine at the scene.
Mr Prentice added: 'Blair Jardine identified himself as the driver of the vehicle.
"Blair Jardine also freely stated to the police officers that he had been using his mobile telephone on speaker at the time of the collision.
'Later enquiry revealed he had been on a video call with another person and that the screens were blank.'
The events of June 4 2024, are evidently a tragedy to all of those who were affected by them
Judge Lady Haldane
Officers at the scene also saw several locked wheel tyre marks on the road.
Mr Prentice said this demonstrated that Jardine 'applied emergency braking' and steered into the opposing lane.
Mr Prentice said friends and family called Sarah Sadie - she was a widow, a mum of two and a retired retail manager.
The advocate depute that doctors treating Sarah found she had 'extensive injury' including fractures to her nose, a rib, a lumbar vertebra and both hands.
The court heard that on June 5 2024, Sarah had surgery and suffered a stroke after she came out of the theatre.
He is deeply remorseful
Defence advocate Emma Toner
Mr Prentice said that on June 7 2024 she was transferred to the major trauma unit at the hospital but continued to 'deteriorate rapidly' - she later died at 7.15pm on June 10 2024.
Meanwhile, Lyndsay, who was aged 59 at the time of the collision, suffered a head injury, rib, knee, leg and wrist fractures and a broken hip.
Mr Prentice added: 'She has had multiple orthopaedic plastic surgery interventions since then.
'She was discharged on October 15 2024, having spent four months in hospital following the collision. She is continuing with rehabilitation.'
Defence advocate Emma Toner said she'd reserve her mitigation for a future hearing and said the court was legally obliged to call for a report into her client's background as he was a first offender.
The seriousness of these offences is such that a custodial sentence is inevitable
Judge Lady Haldane
Ms Toner added: 'He is deeply remorseful.'
The advocate also asked for her client to be given bail.
However, Judge Lady Haldane remanded Jardine in custody.
She added: 'The events of June 4 2024, are evidently a tragedy to all of those who were affected by them.
'The seriousness of these offences is such that a custodial sentence is inevitable.'
'The severity of these offences is such that the appropriate way to proceed is to remand you in custody.'
Jardine will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on August 1 2025.

Prince Harry is totally whipped by Meghan, even the King knows it – she'll hate his reduced status now, expert says

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PRINCE Harry is totally "whipped" by his wife Meghan Markle and even King Charles know it, a royal expert has claimed. Writer and broadcaster Esther Krauke also added that the Duchess of Sussex, 43, will also hate her reduced status among the Royal Family. She said: 'We know that King Charles said something about him being whipped. 'We keep hearing things consistently coming out from courtiers and people that are close to the Royal Family.' It is stressed that the implication here was that Harry was under the thumb of his wife, rather than any suggestion of physical abuse. Ms Krauke added that both the late Queen's and the country's opinion of Meghan Markle had evolved over time. She said: 'The Queen's opinion of Meghan involved, and it's much like how the country's opinion evolved. 'And much like the public, I think the Queen thought Meghan was a breath of fresh air. 'Very intelligent, very well-spoken, obviously from her acting background. 'And she worked, she welcomed her. I think, like much of the country with open arms, I think where things went wrong was clearly the cultural clash.' She added: 'And I think in some ways Meghan thought she was marrying a billionaire, but was marrying a millionaire with like sort of a reduced status. 'So that might have been not appealing eventually. New Meghan allegations are dynamite, they prove she sees Prince Harry as a stepping stone 'But also I just I don't think she fully understood or was even interested in what the role was supposed to become. 'She hadn't earned enough brownie points to actually be able to choose the tools she wanted to go on in the way that she wanted to do or curate her image in the same way, you know, most people would just be like, oh, you have to kind of have skin in the game. 'You have to have, I'm sorry. 'Open schools in Wales on a rainy day for a number of years before you ingratiate yourself and garner that goodwill. 'But I don't think she had that approach or attitude. And you could say it's very American, you know, very can-do spirit.' Mr Dampier previously gave his opinions on the views expressed by royal biographer Bedell Smith that Queen Elizabeth II had shared her alleged doubts over the new Duchess, and feared Harry was "weak". Mr Dampier said the author was extremely close to Lady Elizabeth Anson, who was a confidante and a cousin of the Queen. "And Liza Shockley, as Sally Smith likes to call her, she was speaking to the Queen on a regular basis right up until her death, spoke to her every day, even in lockdown," he continued. Mr Dampier claimed, therefore, this meant information had come "right from the horse's mouth". He also alleged "we can trust this information", which is "very, very telling". In harsh comments, the expert shared his thoughts: "And to be honest, it confirms what we'd already suspected that you know, that at first the Queen was very keen on Meghan." Mr Dampier further alleged the Queen's reported "doubts" about Meghan "ruined her close relationship with Harry". Bedell Smith also claimed Meghan was rude to the late Queen for 10 minutes over wedding details. "She remarked that Harry was perhaps a little bit too much in love, was possibly besotted and a bit weak and being manipulated by Meghan," he continued. Sharing his own opinions, Mr Dampier added: "I think, unfortunately, that confirms what I've been saying or thought for the last few years that, sadly, Meghan never really had any intention of staying in the royal family. "She saw as a stepping stone getting married to to Harry to to to new fame and fortune. "And I think that's what initially Prince William was concerned about. And that's why they fell out. And now we are where we are. But to have this confirmed by somebody so close to the Queen is, is is really dynamite." This comes as for the first time, the Queen's private concerns have been made public in heartbreaking detail — showing just how perceptive she proved to be. This week Sally published 'explosive' revelations made to her by one of Her Majesty's closest confidantes, her first cousin once removed, Lady Elizabeth Anson, in several conversations in 2018 and 2019. Lady Elizabeth claimed there were serious concerns in the upper echelons of the Palace, long before Harry and Meghan made themselves royal pariahs. Just days before the wedding, she had told Sally: 'We hope but don't quite think [Meghan] is in love. 'We think she engineered it all.' She added: 'It's worrying that so many people are questioning whether Meghan is right for Harry. 'The problem, bless his heart, is that Harry is neither bright nor strong, and she is both." The observations by Lady Elizabeth, who died from lung cancer in November 2020 aged 79, show the warning signs were there from the start — and proved well-founded. She said Meghan had initially appeared 'natural, intelligent and thoughtful' after getting engaged to Harry in 2017. But as their wedding approached, they both caused a stir with their poor behaviour — and blatant disrespect for the Queen. Harry was reportedly 'rude to her for ten minutes' in one meeting and upset her by asking the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the wedding service in May 2018, without first seeking permission from the Dean of Windsor. In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced they had chosen to 'transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution'. At first, it seemed they wanted to keep one foot in the royal fold, while pursuing financial opportunities on the outside. But after months of negotiations, the Queen and the then Prince Charles laid down the law — they were either fully in or fully out. There was no in-between. The couple opted for the latter and moved to the US later that year, infamously launching a crusade of Palace-bashing and com- plaints against the royals in the aftermath. 5 The Duke and Duchess were seen out in New York City earlier this year Credit: Getty

Oisin Murphy gets away with a slap on the wrist as BHA refuse to take stronger action

TURF TALK Oisin Murphy gets away with a slap on the wrist as BHA refuse to take stronger action Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) 'HAVE you been waiting long?' Oisin Murphy seemed pretty relaxed as he greeted a group of photographers who were waiting for him to arrive at Reading Magistrates' Court on Thursday lunchtime. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Oisin Murphy pleaded guilty to drink driving on Thursday Credit: PA His arrival had been signalled when his driver was spotted peering around a corner to check if the coast was clear. It wasn't. There was barely a spare seat in the public gallery as Oisin was called into Court 3, where one member of the press raised concerns to the clerk about being able to hear what was being said. 'There are microphones,' he replied. 'And there is nowhere else for you to go, unless you want to go in the dock?' While many in the racing fraternity would probably enjoy seeing journos up in front of the beak, the moment of levity lasted briefly as we were all here for a very serious reason. Oisin only spoke to confirm details such as his name and date of birth, and to plead guilty to drink driving after he crashed a Mercedes into a tree just after midnight on April 27. He was only breathalysed by cops SEVEN hours after the crash, and he was still nearly twice the legal limit at seven in the morning. It is unclear why he wasn't asked for a plea on the second charge — failing to provide a sample at the roadside — which was described as a 'misunderstanding' by the prosecutor Richard Atkins. The resulting sentence was a 20-month driving ban and a £70,000 fine. For a very wealthy young jockey who has his own driver, you could argue it's no more than a firm slap on the wrist. I found it most surprising the BHA, bar adding some new conditions to Oisin's licence and expressing their 'disappointment', have decided to take no further action. For now, at least. As I mentioned last week, time and again his issues have been brushed under the carpet and others have fallen over themselves to make excuses for him. A glaring example came on last weekend's Luck On Sunday show, when Jayne McGivern, a stud owner who is overseeing a multi-million pound construction project in Saudia Arabia, gave her view. She said: 'He's a wonderful guy, an absolute superstar. Jockeys risk their lives every time they get on a horse. We can't possibly understand the pressures. 'He has battled demons and sometimes the demons win. We need more understanding and empathy in this case for Oisin. 'It didn't happen on a racecourse or near a horse. It's his private life and it's nothing to do with us.' That, in a nutshell, is what's wrong with so many in this sport — especially racing's elite or establishment figures. They do not take it seriously, many excuse and indulge Oisin and, quite frankly, enable his destructive behaviour. And Joe Public can't possibly criticise or comment because, well, jockeys are under pressure. Another excuse. I'm of the view that this 'nothing to see here' attitude sends a message to Oisin that he can keep pushing the limits while retaining all his privilege, which is a very dangerous place to be. So I'm not sure why the BHA felt it wasn't necessary to take firmer action — I think it's weak and I don't think it's helpful to Oisin. After all, they were the ones who put conditions on his licence in the first place when he returned from his ban in February 2023 and emphasised the strict requirement to 'remain sober'. There are plenty of examples out there of tough BHA action but here is one I thought I'd share, for all it's not a perfect comparison. In 2020, they banned conditional jockey Callum McKinnes for 56 days for a riding offence which the judicial panel said brought racing 'into disrepute'. He was riding a 150-1 shot at Hereford that finished a distant fifth, but they reckon he 'should have finished fourth'. So not riding with enough vigour to finish fourth on a rank outsider is considered disreputable, but crashing a car while carrying a passenger and nearly twice the drink-drive limit isn't? Hmm. 2 The man who took photos of Oisin in court reacts angrily to photographers in Reading The drama continued after Oisin had left to fly to the US. A member of the public had taken photos of him in court and was hauled into the dock Oisin had just been occupying, given a severe bollocking by the judge and threatened with arrest. What a circus — which is pretty apt considering the last few years of Oisin's turbulent career. Fiend who urged vulnerable woman to attempt suicide in video calls for his sexual pleasure is jailed in landmark case

BEHIND BARS Fiend who urged vulnerable woman to attempt suicide in video calls for his sexual pleasure is jailed in landmark case Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FIEND who urged a vulnerable woman to attempt suicide in video calls for his sexual pleasure has been jailed in a landmark case. Tyler Webb met his victim, who was then aged 21, in an online forum dedicated to mental health and began grooming her. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up The 23-year-old persuaded the woman to seriously self-harm and convinced her to send a photograph of her injuries. Webb also tried to convince his victim to take her own life in a video call but the suicide attempt failed. He has now been jailed for nine years and four months but was handed a hybrid order, meaning he will begin his sentence in hospital until he is deemed fit for prison. Webb was the first person in the country to be charged with encouraging serious self-harm online under Section 184 of the Online Safety Act 2023. He pleaded guilty to that charge and a separate charge of encouraging suicide between June 22 and July 11 last year. Judge Timothy Spencer KC agreed that "very largely" Webb was motivated by sexual gratification. Leicester Crown Court heard after the pair first met on the forum, they began using the Telegram app for "dark" conversations. Over a six-week period, Webb repeatedly told her she had nothing to live for and gave her methods to take her own life. In one 44-minute phone call, he persistently tried to get the woman to kill herself. When she made clear she was not going to do so, Webb then threatened to move on to another woman instead. Prosecutor Louise Oakley said that when Webb encouraged her to harm herself, "in (the victim's) words, he loved it. Tyler Webb told her it turned him on". She continued: "He told her he wanted her to do it during a video call so he could watch. "He would berate her and say she had nothing to live for and she should die." After the woman's failed suicide attempt, she contacted police as she feared Webb would persuade someone else to harm themself. Webb was arrested a week later at his home in Loughborough in July 2024. Police found his user profile on Reddit - called u/EmpathicNarcissist - that showed disturbing images of anime characters with fatal injuries. In a victim impact statement, the woman said: "I don't want to call this encouraging serious self-harm or suicide, I want to call this what it is - an attempted murder through psychological means. "What Tyler did was not a mistake, it was calculated psychological violence. He didn't try to kill me with his hands but with his words. "He had no turmoil while torturing me. He told me that my only value was in dying for his entertainment. "I'm alive, but the life I have left is altered forever. My life is ruined - my mind and body have been severely damaged." The court heard Webb has been diagnosed with mental health disorders including autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and anxiety and depressive disorders. His defence barrister Joey Kwong said Webb was in a "dark time" with his mental health and "wrongly he adopted such warped behaviour and distorted thinking" from material he saw online. You're Not Alone EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide It doesn't discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers. It's the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes. And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women. Yet it's rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now. That is why The Sun launched the You're Not Alone campaign. The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives. Let's all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You're Not Alone. If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support: CALM, 0800 585 858 Heads Together, HUMEN Mind, 0300 123 3393 Papyrus, 0800 068 41 41 Samaritans, 116 123 Detective Constable Lauren Hampton, of Leicestershire Police, said: "This case is not only truly shocking but also deeply concerning. "Webb preyed upon a vulnerable woman at a time when she was reaching out to people in an online forum for help and support. "He quickly gained her trust and then he began with his barrage of vile requests - all the time knowing that what he was telling her to do could result in her ending her own life. "Thankfully, this did not happen, and the victim was able to report what had happened."
