Safari tourist on nighttime walk trampled to death by elephants
A tourist on safari was trampled to death by a heard of elephants after taking a nighttime walk.
The 68-year-old had been staying at Sirheni Bushveld Camp in South Africa's Kruger National Park when she left her husband sleeping in their accommodation, and took a stroll outside just before 11pm.
CCTV cameras captured her walking out of the gates of the camp and onto a dark road, at which point she was met by a herd of elephants with calves.
Panicked, the animals charged at the pensioner, trampling her to death.
A spokesman for Kruger National Park confirmed the woman – who was staying with her partner in self-catered accommodation – died on Saturday night.
Mr JP Louw said: 'SANParks who operate the bush camp have been attending to the unfortunate incident of a visitor who lost her life after encountering elephants.
'In compliance with the law, the matter has been handed over to the police who must be approached for updates, and we will not be making any further comment on it.
'That is both out of respect for the family and also in appreciation of the law.'
The SANParks website said that elephants, lions, hippo, buffalo and leopard all walk the fence line at night and warn tourists that if they 'must walk' to take a torch with them.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the woman's death was reported at the Saselamani Police Station and that officers were investigating.
He added: 'The circumstances surrounding the incident are still a subject for investigation and we will not be revealing the identity until we have contacted the victim's next of kin.'
The nationality of the tourist has not been revealed.
Sirheni Bushveld Camp is 360 miles north of Johannesburg, at the top of the Kruger National Park and lies on the banks of the Mphongolo River.
It runs two daily trips out into the park, which are accompanied by armed rangers.
In January this year tourist Shaik Ahmed, 59, was trampled to death by an elephant in the Kruger as he tried to protect his five and 11-year-old grandchildren.
The eldest boy suffered leg injuries after it was swung around by the elephant's trunk but when Mr Ahmed ran to help the child the animal dropped the youngster and killed the man.
In July last year, meanwhile, a Spanish tourist who was with his bride-to-be was trampled to death in the Pilanesberg National Park near Sun City, two hours from Johannesburg. More Trending

The African elephant, which kills around 500 people a year in Africa, can weigh six tons, stand 13 feet to the shoulder and run up to 25mph.

Marcus Arduini Monzo is accused of murdering 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin and attempting to kill four others during a 20-minute sword rampage in Hainault, London last April A court has heard how an alleged killer slashed a passerby in the neck with a sword before smiling during a 'brutal string of attacks'. The trial at the Old Bailey today heard how Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, is accused of murdering 14-year-old schoolboy Daniel Anjorin and attempting to kill four others during a 20-minute sword rampage in Hainault, north-east London, on April 30 last year. He denies the charges. A grey Ford Transit can be seen mounting a pavement and hitting Donato Iwule, a Co-op security guard on his way to work, in CCTV footage shown to the jury on Monday. The video captured Mr Iwule screaming as the van struck him before it went on to collide with a house. A man is then seen exiting the vehicle and walking after Mr Iwule while brandishing a sword. 'I thought I was dying,' Mr Iwule said in evidence. He described how he desperately tried to escape into a nearby garden but was struck on his knee, face and shoulder and knocked to the ground. He told the court how he saw the driver get out of the van, pull a sword from a cover 'right in front of my face,' before throwing the cover to one side. 'I said 'I don't know you'… I said it multiple times,' Mr Iwule told prosecutor Tom Little KC. 'He said 'I don't care – I'm going to kill you'.' Mr Iwule explained to the jury how he had tried to raise his arms to defend himself but Monzo swung the sword, slicing his neck. 'I saw blood coming out of my neck,' he said. 'I pressed my thumb to not bleed out… I shouted 'God is greatest' in Arabic – because I'm Muslim. When that happened, he was smiling like it was something that he was happy about.' Mr Iwule said he was able to jump over a fence to escape when Monzo became distracted. He described how he later shouted at a schoolboy, believed to be Daniel, to go back inside. During cross-examination Mr Iwule described how he had been standing upright when he was slashed with the sword and said he could clearly hear Monzo telling him he was going to kill him. Last week jurors heard Monzo allegedly killed and skinned his own cat at home before carrying out the alleged attacks. The court heard that a search of Spanish-Brazilian national Monzo's Newham home yielded evidence of the mutilated deboned animal as well as the presence of cannabis. The court heard how Monzo was under the influence of cannabis that may have led to drug-induced psychosis. However, the prosecution says this does not amount to diminished responsibility. Another witness, Mitchell Hayes, was also on his way to work at the Co-op when he told the jury he saw the van 'going faster, slowing down, going faster' before the crash. He described hearing screaming later and said he saw the driver walk around the van and then get back in and reverse away, appearing to hold what looked like a sword. Mr Hayes said he stayed with Mr Iwule, who was bleeding from the neck, for 10 to 15 minutes. He then became aware of another incident nearby, he explained, he saw another colleague, Nathan Hutchinson, shouting that the attacker had a sword and they saw a body on the other side of the road. 'He was running around with it like a maniac,' Mr Hayes said of the man he believed to be Monzo. Monzo is charged with 10 offences in total, including the murder of Daniel Anjorin, four counts for the alleged attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry De Los Rios Polania and PC Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield, a count of wounding with intent, and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon. Monzo has admitted possessing two swords but denies murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. The trial continues.

Huge holiday hotspot sees big drop in UK tourists after locals 'demonise' them
Benidorm is one of the biggest winners in Spain of the drop in British holidaymakers choosing Magaluf following the party resort "clean-up", local bar and nightclub chiefs say A Spanish holiday resort once beloved by Brits is seeing its popularity falter amid efforts to tidy up its image. According to Miguel Perez-Marsa, head of the ABONE nightclub association on Majorca, young Brits are shunning Magaluf. The area used to be overrun by UK tourists during the summer but now attracts a more diverse European crowd. Miguel argued that Brits feel "demonized." French and Italian visitors, who tend to drink less and spend less on nights out, are filling the void left by British revellers. At the same time, British youths, once the mainstay of Magaluf's raucous Punta Ballena strip, have been "steam-rollered" and are now heading to Benidorm and other "more-welcoming" resorts, Miguel said. While more British families are visiting Magaluf, they're choosing all-inclusive deals, which means they're spending less money outside their hotels, Miguel told Diario de Mallorca. The reputation of Magaluf took a hit following the release of a scandalous sex video in June 2014, involving a British tourist in a bar, which resulted in a year-long closure of the establishment and a concerted effort by local authorities to clean up the resort's image. Magaluf's infamous party strip has been under the spotlight since Majorca's leading politician at the time, Jose Ramon Bauza, slammed Punta Ballena as "500 metres of shame". This came after an 18-year-old girl was tricked into performing sex acts for a supposed free holiday, only to receive a cocktail named 'Holiday'. Fines reaching up to £50,000 were introduced for tourists caught balcony jumping, and alcohol service with meals at all-inclusive hotels in areas like Magaluf was restricted under a regional government decree targeting 'drunken tourism', introduced five years ago. Last year saw even stricter measures, including £1,300 penalties for street drinking and mandatory night-time shutdowns of alcohol-selling shops in parts of Magaluf. In May 2024 the Mirror's Hollie Bone visited Magaluf and was shocked by the levels of debauchery on display, despite these efforts. "In just one night our reporter was offered cocaine five times and witnessed a stag party buying a huge can of nitrous oxide, known as hippy crack, before using it openly in a bar. And previous visitors have urged those going this year to be careful as thuggish bouncers, incidents of spiking and theft still plague the party town," she wrote. "During our week in Magaluf we witnessed several blatant breaches of the new laws. We saw members of the stag party buy two one litre bottles of vodka and gin after making an after-hours deal with a takeaway owner at 3am. The same group also bought the nitrous oxide and inhaled balloons of the gas in front of nonchalant bar workers. "Revellers are still enticed into bars by the offers of a free shot with their first drink. For some young Britons a summer season here is still as attractive and exciting as it was eight years ago. One barman from Tottenham, North London, told us he came here in 2016 and has never looked back." During a visit in May last year, Britain's then-Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, called on visitors in the Majorcan hotspot to "show responsibility" and remember they are "guests" in Spain. British holidaymakers form the majority of Benidorm's international visitors. Recent statistics revealed that over two-thirds of the Costa Blanca resort's tourists in May were from overseas, with an encouraging average hotel occupancy rate of 84.7% for the month. This Sunday an anti-mass tourism demonstrators are gearing up for another rally in the Majorcan capital, Palma. The event is orchestrated by activist group Menys Turisme, Mes Vida, with a coalition of 60 organisations confirming their participation. Activists from other cities such as Barcelona and San Sebastian are set to join in a series of synchronised protests. A spokesperson for Menys Turisme, Mes Vida declared last week: "We will demonstrate for the right to a decent life and to demand the brakes are put on the touristification of this island."

Girl, 9, dies and girl, 11, taken to hospital after West Yorkshire house fire

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6.20am on Sunday after they received several phone calls about the blaze in Heckmondwike. Firefighters removed a man, no further details, and two young girls from the property. The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the two girls, aged nine and 11, were taken to hospital. The youngest girl died in hospital yesterday. The 11-year-old remains in a critical condition, West Yorkshire Police said. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex said: 'We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives. More Trending 'Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since yesterday and we have been working to locate and support relatives of the victims both here and outside of the UK at what is clearly an awful time for the family. 'While our enquiries remain ongoing we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances regarding the cause of the fire and will be preparing a file for the coroner in due course.
